UK Girls Rights Manager Overview of Department This role sits within the Girls Rights and Youth Team (GRYT), in the Public Engagement Department of Plan International UK. The team combines global campaigning, youth engagement and UK policy and programmes, working with young people to create a shift in thinking on girls rights globally and in the UK and make a positive impact for girls rights. It is an exciting time for this dynamic team which is working at the forefront of delivering Plan UK s universal girls rights message. The Public Engagement department works to reach out to UK audiences to inform them about and gather support for Plan International UK s work to ultimately influence the achievement of positive impact in the lives of boys and girls around the world - and in particular on adolescent girls rights. In order to deliver this, the department combines a variety of tactics and areas of work such as fundraising, major partnerships, communications, campaigns, media relations, UK policy and practice and youth engagement. The GRYT is the leading voice for Plan International UK s current global girls rights campaign - Because I am a Girl, as well as our UK girls rights work and UK youth engagement and is a fastpaced environment. It leads, creates, shapes and implements the strategy for our UK Girls Rights Policy and Programme, our Global Campaign on Girls Rights and our organisational Youth Engagement. Years ago, Plan International called for a UN International Day of the Girl to mark the discrimination and violence that held girls back and to celebrate the achievements and potential of girls. Now, in 2018, International Day of the Girl is celebrated as a high profile event where the world s spotlight is turned on girls and girls rights. Plan International s Takeover is a global activity where girls step in and takeover jobs, news desks, leadership roles and places they normally do not have a voice in. This year, we are planning a large girls rights event and require a post to co-ordinate the engagement of girls via interested schools across the country.

2 Job Purpose The Schools and Youth Engagement Project Officer will be based in the Girls Rights and Youth team and will work to: Ensure that between 200 and 300 girls are able to join in with Plan International UK s Global Takeover activities in London for International Day of the Girl Maintain strong and productive relationships with schools and youth organisations recruiting them for the event and to promote and secure meaningful youth engagement To achieve best outcomes and impact for International Day of the Girl takeover Create materials for schools to help young people understand and speak about the issues globally and in the UK Communicate to the schools before, during and after the activities and support online presence and group communications. Take on child protection responsibilities for International Day of the Girl activities and ensure Plan International UK s child protection policies are understood and liaise with schools with regard to their policies. Key Deliverables Ensure Plan International s global takeover activities in London are a success Lead on supporting young people to use their voice during the International Day of the Girl activities Lead on communications with schools and the attending girls Ensure full compliance with Child Safeguarding policies for all YAP activities and support mainstreaming Child Protection Other Duties Key Activities Drive a recruitment process to engage schools and youth organisations to take part Effectively utilise youth networks and sector press to secure full attendance of 200+ girls Drive a strong commitment to diversity and geographical spread in the representation of girls Be the face of Plan International to schools and youth organisations: visit them, run assemblies, speak to teachers, blog etc to recruit and build momentum Working closely with the UK Girls Rights Manager, design the theme and content of the activity during the event Attend regular event planning meetings Meet regularly with the Event Manager to co-ordinate youth attendance Design an evaluation tool and deliver and complete an evaluation Design, create and deliver a resource pack to schools so girls are prepared and skilled, ready to participate Support schools to prepare girls in communication skills including debating, public speaking etc Support schools to prepare girls to share their own stories safely and in a meaningful way Coordinate regular group communications before, during and after International Day of the Girl activities Support any digital communications Promote the use of youth resources by schools and design and deliver the follow-up communications with schools after International Day of the Girl Implement child safeguarding policies and procedures and escalate concerns as and when they arise in line with relevant policy Lead on securing and completing all required safeguarding administration for the International Day of the Girl activities Keep accurate records of all child safeguarding data, incidents and concerns in line with the policy Keep precise and accurate records of the International Day of the Girl youth engagement activities Ensure the data collected for this event is GDPR compliant

3 Report regularly to the Event Manger with details on recruitment and the needs of those attending Contribute to the overall smooth operations of the Girls Rights and Youth team and Public Engagement Department- through attending necessary meetings and taking part in relevant planning and activity sessions Collate and disseminate an evaluation General Ensure that all activities undertaken on behalf of Plan International UK, externally or internally, are in line with the overall aims of the organisation and with policies and procedures. Participate in training and other activities as requested Awareness and Representation Commitment to Plan s position on promoting girls rights and gender equality, and integrating this into all aspects of work. Commitment to child safeguarding and to being confident and competent in meeting safeguarding responsibilities Level of responsibility for safeguarding children and young people Level of Budgetary Responsibility Medium/High - Have responsibility for ensuring Child Protection procedures or policies are adhered to at Youth Engagement events and in fulfilment of deliverables. RELEVANT EXPERIENCE The successful candidate will have experience of. Working directly with young people in a participatory way Experience of designing and producing materials for schools that have been widely used and meet relevant Key Stage requirements Working in an educational setting as well as experience of working with schools. Supporting young people to take part in major communication and policy influencing activities. Proven experience of providing administrative and logistical support across teams Supporting the implementation of child protection policy and procedures for off-site visits including overnight
