1 PROJECT PERSONNEL FOR SELF EMPLOYED WOMEN S ASSOCIATION (SEWA) URBAN POVERTY PROJECT There are several positions available for the SEWA project A Space of My Own: Integrating the Urban Poor in City Development. The project combines grass roots experience with policy formulation at the city level, to ensure that urban informal workers have greater voice within urban planning processes and to counter the exclusionary trend of many modernizing cities today, by fundamental rethinking and reshaping of urban plans, regulations, and policies to incorporate the working poor. In particular, the project has three objectives: Building the collective strength of the urban poor by organizing urban informal economy workers, especially women, within the SEWA movement. Creating an international learning hub for organizing urban informal economy workers, especially women. Achieving new frontiers in inclusive city development. The project involves a number of Partner organizations in different parts of India. We need suitable candidates for the following openings as per the activities (1) SEWA URBAN UNION AHMEDABAD CITY SEWA is a trade union registered in It is an organisation of poor, self-employed women workers. These are women who earn a living through their own labour or small businesses. They do not obtain regular salaried employment with welfare benefits like workers in the organised sector. They are the unprotected labour force of our country. Constituting 93% of the labour force, these are workers of the unorganised sector. Of the female labour force in India, more than 94% are in the unorganised sector. However their work is not counted and hence remains invisible. In fact, women workers themselves remain uncounted, undercounted and invisible. Ahmedabad city is the birthplace of SEWA. We have been organising women workers here for the last 36 years, and since last 8 years, we have been organizing through campaigns. Self-employed women workers from 96 trades are active in our urban union. The campaign approach has enabled us to address work related issues of as many women workers as possible. They also influence policy and laws. The main activities of urban union are - Strengthen the union by increasing membership. Increase linkages with and between the members through constant contact. Address the members issue through meetings, negotiations and direct action. Strengthen worker s leadership, as they lead the campaigns. (i) PROJECT COORDINATOR To look after the overall implementation and coordination of activities To coordinate with stakeholders To look after finance and audit To be responsible for reporting To be responsible for audit To guide and evaluate the work of the project personnel.

2 The Project Coordinator s remuneration will be approximately 2 Lacs/- to 2.16 Lacs/- year, depending on the qualification and experience. (ii) ASSIATANT PROJECT COORDINATOR To coordinate the activities of the project To prepare the work plan To be responsible that the activities is carried out according to the work plan To assist the project coordinator in overall implementation of the project To allot and evaluate the work of project personnel. The Assistant Project Coordinator s remuneration will be approximately Rs.1 Lac /- to 1.4 Lac/- year, depending on the qualification and experience. (iii) CONSULTANT FOR ORGANISING TECHNIQUES To give inputs on organising techniques To develop modules, games and other mediums for organising To coordinate with other stake holders The Consultant s remuneration will be approximately Rs.70,000/- to 75,000/- year, depending on the qualification and experience. (iv) CONSULTANT FOR FEASIBILITY STUDY FOR SCRAP SHOP To carry out the feasibility study to open a scrap shop for waste pickers To help actual opening of the scrap shop To coordinate with stake holders The Consultant s remuneration will be approximately Rs.1 Lac /- to 1.5Lac/- year, depending on the qualification and experience. FOR ALL THE ABOVE POSTS ARE - Master Degree in Management / MSW / MLW/ related field with experience in the development sector.

3 (v) CONSULTANT FOR ON GOING DOCUMENTATION To document the best practices of the project. To document on going process of the project activities. To coordinate with other stake holders Degree / diploma in development communications / Journalism with 1-2 yrs. of experience The Consultant s remuneration will be approximately Rs. 90,000/- to 96,000/- year, depending on the qualification and experience. (2) SEWA ACADEMY AHMEDABAD CITY SEWA Academy is the focal point for all of SEWA s capacity building and research efforts. In a very basic sense, SEWA Academy functions as our member s UNIVERSITY, providing our members their first introduction to a formal learning environment. It is the organizational wing responsible for basic membership education and for capacity building, leadership training, communications and research. A movement requires an ideological framework and a clear direction understood by all its members. All participants in the movement must have a common understanding of the vision and the strategy. Moreover, in a grassroots movement like SEWA, leadership cannot be imposed from above. It must blossom from below so that the organization can remain dynamic, effective, and unified. To evoke and inspire such grassroots leadership, education is fundamental. Besides education and capacity building, it is also important to understand the lives and work of self employed women and carry that understanding to the women themselves and to policy makers, activists, academics, and the general public. It is in response to these needs that the SEWA Academy was created in (i) TRAINER Training needs assessment for different categories / background of women and staff. To Design training packages and elaborating annual training plan. To Evaluate effectiveness of the training inputs to meet the needs of the recipients. To Define, design and prepare training materials as per requirements including written and audio-visual material. Master Degree in economics, rural development or equivalent. Minimum of 2 years experience in capacity building programme. Willingness to travel extensively in different parts of the state/ Country

4 The Trainer s remuneration will be approximately Rs. 90,000/- to 96,000/- year, depending on the qualification and experience. (ii) ASSISTANT TRAINERS (KNOWN AS SPEARHEAD TEAM) To conduct basic, standard training programs. To prepare simple correspondence and / or communications documents. To generate information required for the preparation for the training programme. Should have complete understanding / knowledge about the various features of the product / services and should have awareness of the current gaps based on women s feedback. Graduation The Assistant Trainer s remuneration will be approximately Rs. 55,000/- to 60,000/- year, depending on the qualification and experience. SEWA Academy conducts The Exposure and Dialogue Programmes the details are as under - Exposure and Dialogue Programmes use the strategies of immersion, reflection and dialogue to expose senior level technocrats and bureaucrats to the realities of the people whom their policies and projects might affect. Accompanied by local facilitators, these senior officials spend a few (two, three or four) nights actually staying in the home and at work in order to understand poverty from her perspective. After the exposure, participants reflect on their experiences and enter a process of dialogue aimed at analyzing, understanding and even changing policies to make them more focused on the needs and reality of women workers in the informal economy. (iii) EXPOSURE DIALOGUE PROGRAMME (EDP) UNIT COORDINATOR To transfer technical and functional knowledge require by self-employed women workers of Informal sector through the development and implementation of the appropriate EDP programme and interventions. To Design and develop higher level of EDP programs aimed increasing / improving capability on governance, strategy development, market development. To Ensure continuous development of new approaches for EDP that are suited to the requirements of the self-employed women workers of informal sector. To Develop capability of staff to train self employed women workers of Informal sector for conducting EDPs. To Evaluate effectiveness of EDP programs in equipping self employed women workers of informal sector.

5 Higher degree in rural management, planning or other relevant subject At least 10 years practical experience in planning and management of developmental project Experience in procedures and requirement for international travel, financing institution, concerning planning, budgeting and reporting and an adequate depth and breadth of experience in development implementation and planning. The EDP Unit Coordinator s remuneration will be approximately Rs to 1.8 Lacs year, depending on the qualification and experience. (iv) EXPOSURE DIALOGUE PROGRAMME (EDP) FACILITATOR To Plan and coordinate EDP activities viz. Preparation for the EDP To organize and implementation of EDPs. Follow up of the EDP/Conference. To build the capacity of the staff / spearhead team for facilitating EDPs. To provide training to women at different level of conducting EDPs. To Provide guidance on conducting EDPs. To Keep abreast of the developments in EDP in informal sector particularly with women workers of informal sector. Report writing and documentation of each EDP and preparation of EDP Guide. Master Degree in economics, rural development or equivalent. Minimum of 8 years experience of working in development field. The EDP Facilitator s remuneration will be approximately Rs. 90,000/- to 96,000/- year, depending on the qualification and experience. (v) FINANCE MANAGER Reviewing SEWA Academy s existing systems and designing a computerized accounting system for the project which meets the requirements of the funder and which provides adequate machines for sound financial management and accountability. Ensuring uniformity in accounting system for all projects funds. Monitoring expenditure of the project funds. Preparing Quarterly financial reports for submission to funder. Developing improve systems for financial planning and control including cost accounting for business activities cost analysis in decision making and funds flow monitoring. Train account staff in implementation of new system.

6 An accredited accountancy qualification At least 10 years experience in establishing accounting system, preferably with experience in internationally funded project. The Finance Manager s remuneration will be approximately Rs. 1 to 1.4 Lacs year, depending on the qualification and experience. (3) DIRECTOR KARMIKA SCHOOL FOR CONSTRUCTION WORKERS AHMEDABAD CITY THE KARMIKA SCHOOL FOR CONSTRUCTION WORKERS: The Mahila Housing SEWA Trust (MHT) is a housing service organization promoted by the Self Employed Women s Association (SEWA) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. MHT is working towards bringing improved housing services to poor women in the informal sector. In this light MHT has established the Karmika School for Construction Workers with the mission to upgrade construction skills of women workers that constitute 51 percent of the sector s workforce. After the globalization advanced technology require more and more skilled labor in India s construction sector. Hence employment opportunities of less skilled women have been reduced. MHT initiated the skill upgradation activities in 1998 on demand from women construction workers themselves. In an effort to consolidate the activities, Karmika School for Construction Workers was founded in Since its opening, Karmika School has trained over 5,000 women in 12 trades such as masonry and plumbing services. The School has successfully managed to initiate linkages with mainstream construction sector companies, and desires to build on and further such relationships with a diverse set of stakeholders while consolidating, improving and expanding its training activities. Karmika School requires a fulltime Director to carry forward these activities. OF THE DIRECTOR: To work with the existing team and build upon the existing training curricula and facilities. To liaise and network with construction companies, donors, governments, and other stakeholders in the sector, and to expand the activities of Karmika School. To enhance the existing ethos of the School and its decentralized training centres to develop as a professional grassroots organization. To undertake any further activities, as may be required to upscale the School s operations. Monitoring of new/draft workers education manuals. S OF THE DIRECTOR: Since this is a new, unusual and cutting-edge area of work, the candidate should be enthusiastic about innovation, conceptualization, building new structures and mobilizing support. He/she should have a master s degree in management (or related field). He/she should have at least two to three years of professional experience. Some experience in education or construction would be an asset. The Director s remuneration will be approximately Rs. 2.5 to 3 Lacs year, depending on the qualification and experience.

7 (4) SEWA BHARAT NEW DELHI The rapid progress made by SEWA in organising women in Gujarat lead to a demand for creation of similar organisations in other states too. SEWA Bharat was thus set up in 1982 in response to this demand. Its main aim is to facilitate the formation of new member organisations across the country and to promote their growth and development. SEWA Bharat is, therefore, a federation of SEWA member organisations, with the mandate to highlight issues concerning women working in the informal sector, and to strengthen the capacity of the organisations that serve the interests of these women. Presently nine such SEWA member organisations are working in 35 districts of seven states, and together they accounted for a total membership around 12,00,000. SEWA Bharat has following openings for its new initiatives. (i) PROJECT COORDINATOR To monitor of the work in all the four states and would be responsible for documentation. She would be reporting to the SEWA Bharat coordinator for progress of the work. The Project Coordinator s remuneration will be approximately Rs. 2 to 2.4 Lacs year, depending on the qualification and experience. (ii) DISSEMINATION CENTER COORDINATOR To create a central database of all SEWA's research & documentation work & to ensure that the knowledge product available on disseminating center is being accessed by Researcher, Academicians, Policy level people & Civil society. The Dissemination Center Coordinator s remuneration will be approximately Rs. 2 to 2.4 Lacs year, depending on the qualification and experience. (iii) REGIONAL COORDINATOR To Coordinate the activity related to informal sector to document the process of organising the women worker & to coordinate with project coordinator of various SEWA Programes & govt. official s in order to ensure better access the SEWA programme & Government schemes.

8 The Regional Coordinator s remuneration will be approximately Rs. 1 to 1.4 Lacs year, depending on the qualification and experience. FOR ALL THE ABOVE POSTS ARE - M.A. / PG Diploma in Rural Development / MSW / M.A. in humanities and experience in Documentation / Research (iv) MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION COORDINATOR Responsible for generating high quality documentation on SEWA & Coordinating with Government Department, & media to enhance the visibility of women workers in the informal sector. Degree / diploma in development communications / Journalism with 1-2 yrs. of experience The Media & Communication Coordinator s remuneration will be approximately Rs. 2 to 2.4 Lacs year, depending on the qualification and experience. For all the above mentioned posts the criteria is- The candidate should have Initiative, commitment and broad vision/ empathy with SEWA s Philosophy and approach/ Ability to interact easily with communities Fluency in Gujarati (except SEWA Bharat),, Hindi, English.
