1 Job Description Post Title : Business Analyst (Career Pathway) School/Department : Department of IT Services Line Manager : Head of Service Planning and Governance Grade : 7 Post number : Job Purpose: Works independently with stakeholders to capture, analyse and document the current and to-be states as part of a wider programme of improvements to services of systems Works day-to-day as an active part of a project / programme team to provide the analysis to improve business activities, enabling change by capturing needs and recommending solutions that deliver value to stakeholders and the business and articulating the business need and rationale for change. Help to enable organisational transformation by validating and verifying requirements and ensure approval by all relevant stakeholders Provide input into project documents, requirements documents, etc as appropriate, and helps to identify appropriate timescale and resource estimates for projects and planning purposes. Required to participate in internal and external networks to ensure effective communication and engagement with key stakeholders, staff, suppliers and industry specialists. Main Duties and Responsibilities may include the following: Service delivery, operation and development Captures, analyses and documents business requirements as part of analysis of project and service resource needs, promotes and delivers best practice approaches to meet objectives. Contributes to the development of the application of business analysis methodologies, standards and guidelines for business analysis activities within IT Services and its strategy. Identifies the learning needs of service users and delivers appropriate demonstrations, training/learning initiatives.

2 Adapts, develops, integrates and implements, ICT devices, systems, applications and solutions as part of the digital estate and environment. Leadership, team management and development Works collaboratively with immediate team members and staff across the wider IT Services teams to facilitate the exchange of information, and help focus joint effort with projects and service delivery. May be required to provide supervision of team members, ensuring work activities are allocated correctly and performance expectations are met. Promotes and fosters positive and highly collaborative approaches to problem solving and project implementation, helping to motivate and coach less experienced team members. Delivers relevant staff training activities where required. Relationships, stakeholders and networking Contributes to stakeholder engagement and communication plans. Liaises with managers and relevant staff within IT Services and across the University to ensure the successful delivery of work priorities. Manages and maintains effective stakeholder relationships to exchange knowledge, extract requirements and influence service improvements. Participates in new and develops existing internal and external networks, to share ideas and exchange knowledge to enhance and encourage own skills and the skills of others and within the IT Services team. Participates in external specialist networks to identify business analysis approaches, tools and techniques and quality standards. Planning and organising resources Records observations and data pertaining to service development, designing data collection tools and techniques where necessary with the analysis and implementation of projects and services. Identifies and articulates project and service goals and objectives, monitors performance metrics to ensure successful delivery and integrity of providing progress reports and mitigating actions to ensure key deliverables and targets are met. Provides regular status reports and identify risk management and contingency planning to other IT Service staff, specialists, users, managers and stakeholders. Decision making and problem solving Acts as a point of contact for team members and other IT Services and University staff to interpret and resolve architecture and technical problems within the Business Analysis remit.

3 Makes decisions about the nature and level of problem solving and analytical tools, techniques and protocols to deliver project and service objectives and promotes their use. Collaborates with specialists within IT Services and across the University, regarding the use of modelling and analytical tools, methods, standards to deliver integrity and consistency with service delivery. Provides information and data on specification and procurement outcomes to IT Services and University staff to facilitate collaborative decision making or inform the decision making of others. Solves problems and provides workarounds with the support and integration of new digital products and services. PERSON SPECIFICATION Qualifications/Experience: Essential Degree or equivalent experience experience in a relevant discipline. Recognised business analyst qualification (e.g. BCS Foundation certification for Business Analysts), or demonstrable experience of delivering change within a complex environment Proven experience of all aspects of change projects including analysis, eliciting and documenting requirements and processes, design and implementation Experience of organising workshop events, and meeting with individuals, to identify the requirements and other outputs as required. Demonstrable experience of delivering change. Professional project management qualification (e.g. PRINCE2 foundation or equivalent) or demonstrable equivalent experience in projects management techniques [or with training have achieved this qualification within a reasonable time frame] ITIL (Version 3 or later) Foundation Level Qualification [or with training have achieved this qualification within their probation period]msu's Desirable Experience of working in a Higher Education environment Management Qualification or equivalent leadership and management experience Professional qualifications including PRINCE2, TOGAF and/or ISEB, BCS Knowledge of Agile Project Management techniques Skills & Knowledge: Essential Able to communicate effectively to describe situations using written and spoken forms of communication.

6 Leadership, team management and development Works collaboratively within the team and take responsibility for supervising leading other team members to facilitate the effective delivery of projects and operational service requirements. Provides guidance and feedback to team members across the IT Services teams to facilitate project working and prevent service disruption, coaching and mentoring staff where necessary. Provides training and development to team members and feedback on performance where necessary. Relationships, stakeholders and networking Liaises with IT Managers and Head of Service to provide status reports on performance and reliability of projects and service delivery activities, highlighting any potential obstacles or barriers that may hinder the successful delivery of strategic objectives. Builds strong working relationships within the immediate team, encouraging team members to liaise and engage across the wider IT Services team, exchanging knowledge and skills. Builds new and develop existing internal and external networks, to share expertise and exchange knowledge to enhance and encourage innovation and creativity personally and within the IT Services team. Participates in external networks to identify new problem solving approaches, tools and techniques, and develop these into methodologies and protocols for use by other staff in IT Services. Participates in networks within the organisation to strengthen positive working relationships with key stakeholders in the University, facilitate and influence decision making that will facilitate project delivery and service transformation. Planning and organising resources Accountable for operational and planning and the management of business analysis resources and budgets to meet key priorities of IT Services and University business plans. Leads, manages and implements projects across a defined area, monitoring and mapping performance, and providing progress reports and mitigating actions to ensure key deliverables and targets are met. Responsible for monitoring project outputs against specifications and key deliverables throughout implementation and user acceptance testing stages and handover. Engages with project stakeholders to manage expectations and provide accurate and effective risk management and contingency planning. Decision making and problem solving
