2 Employment Package Contract This is a full-time, 12 month fixed term contract starting on 1 st September 2018, working 37.5 hours per week. The working pattern will be discussed between the Line Manager and the post holder, but flexibility will be required for evening and weekend work as part of the team rota. This is a multi-site, 7-day operation and therefore there may be some requirement to work flexibly to meet the needs of the Charity. Salary The starting salary for this role is 25,553 per annum. Holiday 31 days holiday per year, inclusive of the 8 statutory public holidays. This increases by one day each year until a maximum of 34 days (pro rata for part time employees) is reached. Probationary Period and Review Your probationary period will be 3 months. During this period, should either you or the Charity wish to terminate your employment, your notice period shall be 1 week. After 3 months of employment the notice period is 1 month. Performance Reviews Employees have the opportunity of a probationary review meeting with their Manager at the end of their probationary period. Pension Scheme The Charity values its employees and believes that pension contributions are an important part of the benefit package offered. The Donkey Sanctuary exceeds the government recommended rate amounts as shown in the table below: Band Employer Contribution Employee Contribution % of annual salary 2.5% minimum % of annual salary 3.5% minimum Executives 10.5% of annual salary 4.5% minimum The scheme is administered following government set auto enrolment rules. New members of staff will receive an information sheet from Human Resources as part of their starter pack which explains the scheme and the postponement rules. A mandatory postponement letter will be generated by payroll and distributed with your first month s payslip, this will also provide details on eligibility and early opt-in instructions. After three months of employment you will be assessed, following current government auto enrolment criteria, and, if eligible, will be auto-enrolled into The Donkey Sanctuary Group Personal pension scheme. 2

4 Job Description Post Title: Department: Responsible to: Intern Veterinary Surgeon Veterinary Senior Veterinary Surgeon Our Vision and Mission The Donkey Sanctuary is working for a world where donkeys and mules live free from suffering, and their contribution to humanity is fully valued. We will achieve this by transforming the quality of life for donkeys, mules and people worldwide through greater understanding, collaboration and support, and by promoting lasting, mutually life-enhancing relationships. Overall Purpose To provide veterinary advice and treatment for resident donkeys and mules in the UK DS, to assist in care of hospitalised patients, and to learn sufficient about donkey/mule medicine and surgery to become competent in these areas. The internship is intended to provide you with clinical training under the supervision of more senior veterinary colleagues. You will be working closely with the veterinary team including nurses, grooms and reception staff; you will also be communicating with many other departments. A team approach to problem solving will be required. Main Duties and Responsibilities Hospital In Patient checks- working with nurses and case vet- clinical exam, medication, record keeping, bandage changes etc. Results communicated to case vet and farm/owner. Anaesthesia- Assist in pre-op check, induction and monitoring of anaesthesia- this will progress to sole charge when competent. Imaging- assist in hospital diagnostic imaging- Radiography, Ultrasound, Endoscopy with aim to developing competency for sole charge. Surgery- to assist with basic surgery expected in ambulatory/first opinion practice where possible. Farm work Routine calls on a regular basis to all farms as required Ability to use, input and retrieve herd health data from Animal Management System ( computer based recording system) Liaise with farm staff, manager, and supervisor about herd health issues- under guidance of senior vets. Undertake /assist with routine herd health tasks- weighing, condition scoring, feed advice etc Recognise animals with reduce Quality of life and enable compassionate discussions and end of life plans with staff Liaise with research department to further understanding of DS policy and implementation of Strategic worming and ectoparasite treatments Liaise with research department /vets/farm managers to understand donkey/mule nutrition across groups/ages/problems. Dentistry Develop skills alongside EDT and lead vet Chart mouths accurately Use of hand and power tools Recognise and refer dental abnormalities requiring complex treatments Assist in complex procedures 4

5 Learn and perform dental nerve blocks. Welfare Work with welfare vet and welfare department to understand relevant legislation Attend holding base and welfare officer visits when /if possible Be familiar with indicators of good and poor welfare Be able to undertake structured welfare assessments(wa) on groups and individual animals Contribute to impact assessment with global donkey WA. Farriery To become competent in all aspects of hoof care, and basic trimming To work alongside resident farriers to formulate treatment plans. Laboratory To learn and be able to perform basic Post mortem To learn and be able to use basic lab skills- blood smear, biopsy, interpretation of results, use of in house testing. Fundraising/PR Be aware of need for fundraising for a charity Attend and participate in DS events Create blog content for web based information Research Project To undertake a supervised mini- research project working with the research team, topic to be decided To achieve skills in data collection, analysis and report writing. External training It is expected that the intern will spend between 1 and 2 weeks at partner vet practices to enhance their skills in lameness evaluation, hospital medicine and a more horse based caseload. Global reach of Donkey Sanctuary To be involved with some aspect of the wider global work of the DS- expected via a visit to European or global project country. Responsibilities of all Donkey Sanctuary Employees To work within the Charity s guidelines with regard to conduct, recognising its policies with regard to equality, and showing respect and co-operation towards fellow colleagues; Under Health & Safety legislation, all staff must work in the safest possible way in order to ensure their Health & Safety and that of all others who may be affected by their actions; Demonstrate a commitment to continuing personal development; To co-operate with management and colleagues to promote good communications through sharing appropriate information and building positive working relationships Act as an Ambassador for the charity at all times; Hours 37.5 hours per week; however, due to the seniority and nature of this position, flexibility is required to be able to fulfil the duties of the role and the charity. 5

6 Location Based at the Veterinary Hospital which is located at Brookfield Farm, Honiton, Devon. The role will require travel between charity locations. Person Specification Knowledge and Skills Essential: A newly qualified graduate with a degree that is registrable with the RCVS Evidence of equine related EMS and electives, with an interest in herd health Competent at basic clinical equine skills including handling Fluent in spoken and written English with the ability to communicate clearly to a variety or stakeholders Competent IT skills Good organisational skills with the ability manage multiple caseloads; Full and valid driving licence and willing to travel Desirable: Previous EMS at The Donkey Sanctuary or an alternative equine related charity, UK or overseas. Previous experience of writing blogs and public speaking Personal Attributes: Able to demonstrate a welfare focused approach to equine and donkey care Excellent interpersonal skills along with the ability to develop strong working relationships with internal departments and external collaborators; Ability to work as part of a team; Attention to detail; Adaptable to the demands of working in an area of rapid change and development; Able to present a positive professional image of The Donkey Sanctuary at all times. Note: To reflect any changes within the Charity during the next few years, the scope of this role will be regularly reviewed and may evolve to meet those needs. Any changes will be agreed in advance with the post holder and confirmed in writing. 6
