Take Control of Your Finances Part 1 This is the time of year when lots of people will be making resolutions. The IIAB has a few tips to assist you with your financial goals: 1. MAKE YOUR GOALS REALISTIC If you did not save tons of money within the last 10/20/30 years, chances are that the 2017 version of you will not magically gain the will power and dedication to do so. Set yourself a realistic target that you can look forward to achieving and gradually work your way towards stretch goals.

Take Control of Your Finances Part 2 2. SET PRIORITIES As history has shown us, we won't achieve a million resolutions in one year. Select the goals that need to become high priority. Do you need a vehicle to get around? Then saving money would become a higher priority. Know which of your goals are priority so that you don't sacrifice what is important for something trivial.

Take Control of Your Finances Part 3 3. HAVE A DETAILED PLAN Vague goals tend not to achieve results. Do you need to save $5,000 for that vacation in October? That means you need to save $500 every month. How does this fit into your current budget? What expense will you have to cut? If you can't cut any expenses, can you earn the additional income? If you ask yourself the hard questions and you come up with a solid plan to achieve them, you're more likely to stick to your goal.

Take Control of Your Finances Part 4 4. SET DISINCENTIVES FOR BREAKING YOUR GOALS Devise a plan to make it difficult to break off your goals. Set up obstacles that make it unpleasant to deviate from the plan. It can be as simple as transferring your savings to a fixed deposit account that is physically inconvenient to access or incurs penalties if you dip into it. Do everything that is necessary to ensure that you maintain your goals!

Take Control of Your Finances Part 5 5. CHECK IN ON YOUR PROGRESS FREQUENTLY Set up periodic reminders to monitor the progress that you have made, be it daily/weekly/monthly. You should not be finding out when your goal becomes due that you are short. The sooner you realize this, the more likely you will be able to correct it. In closing, simply remember that it is never too late to take control of your finances! Krystle Howell, CIA, CPA, ALMI IIAB Chapter Secretary
