3 Welcome to the Webinar Winnie Clonts Principal and Creative Consultant For almost 30 years, Winnie Clonts has been developing content for Wonderlic s assessments and surveys and is currently a member of the Wonderlic Soft Skills Bootcamp development team. She has managed corporate divisions including Learning Outcomes, Research and Development, Marketing and Educational Services. Winnie co-authored the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test (WBST), and was responsible for the development of WebApp, Wonderlic s original Internet pre-employment screening service. She was an author of the Wonderlic Personnel Test Revised (WPT-R), the General Assessment of Individual Needs (GAIN) and the Situational Judgement Test (SJT).

8 What is Cultural Competence? Culture is an integrated pattern of human behavior, which includes but is not limited to: thought communication languages beliefs values practices customs courtesies rituals manners of interacting roles relationships expected behaviors

9 What is Cultural Competence? Cultural Competence requires organizations to: have a defined set of values and principles that enable them to work effectively cross-culturally demonstrate behaviors, and provide policies and structures that enable employees to work effectively cross-culturally develop ways to o value diversity o conduct self-assessment o manage the dynamics of difference o acquire and institutionalize cultural knowledge o adapt to the diversity and cultural contexts of employees o and clients incorporate the above in all aspects of policy making, administration, product development, and delivery of products and services

Linguistic competence is The capacity of an organization and its personnel to communicate effectively, and convey information in a manner that is easily understood by diverse audiences including persons of limited English proficiency, those who have low literacy skills or are not literate, and individuals with disabilities. 12 What is Cultural Competence? Cultural Awareness Becoming aware of our own cultural values, beliefs and perceptions. Cultural Knowledge Knowledge of cultural characteristics, history, values, belief systems, and behaviors of the members of another ethnic group. Cultural Sensitivity Being aware of and sensitive to other practices and cultures without assigning them a value positive or negative, better or worse, right or wrong.

15 Implementing Cultural Competence Examine Assumptions Identify your assumptions Use your Critical Thinking Skills to examine them o Test the negative statement o Validate your assumptions with objective sources o Experiment with the idea that your assumption doesn't exist o Try to narrow the assumption

16 Implementing Cultural Competence Find Similarities Culture makes people different and unique, but it's important to recognize that you have something in common with everyone you meet. Examples: Similar family situations Enjoy the same music Work for the same company Share the same hobbies o reading, hiking Root for the same sports team

17 Implementing Cultural Competence Engage in Experiential Learning Learn by doing Real-life, practical experience Knowledge gained by an experience

18 Implementing Cultural Competence Anticipate Impact Think before speaking or acting. Don't expect others to think or behave the way you do. Don't allow biases and prejudices to influence your interactions with others. Treat all people with respect. Focus on cooperation to reach mutual goals.

19 Implementing Cultural Competence Be Conscious of Diversity Resistance Delaying consideration/implementation of diversity issues Attacking diversity as being too time consuming or complex Resisting the inclusion of people with diverse backgrounds in all aspects of the organization Accepting the inequitable compensation or lack of opportunity for people with diverse backgrounds Discrediting information provided by people with diverse backgrounds Failing to acknowledge and recognize the contributions of people with diverse backgrounds Source: Johnson, M. 20 Implementing Cultural Competence Advantages of the Culture Competence Process Improves communication. Increases respect and mutual understanding. Increases morale. Increases creativity in problem solving by adding new perspectives. Increases trust and cooperation. Increases participation and involvement of diverse groups. Reduces fear of mistakes, competition and conflict. Promotes business relationships based upon understanding. Promotes inclusion and equality.
