1 Job Announcement Adirondack Mountain Club The Adirondack Mountain Club is a diverse organization with a threefold program of conservation, education, recreation, advocacy and stewardship. As the organization is diverse so are the job responsibilities of its staff and volunteers. This partnership between staff and volunteers is based on trust, respect, and a mutual understanding of these responsibilities. The individual employee goals and responsibilities are outlined in the following job description: Job Title: Location: Center (HLPC) Responsible to/evaluated by: Supervises: Team Coordination with: Chief Operating Officer Member Service Center (MSC), Heart Lake Program Executive Director North Country Operations Director; Membership Director Education Director, Retail, Publications Director Executive Director, Chief Fiscal Officer, Development Director, and Conservation Directors Job Description: Chief Operating Officer Reporting to the Executive Director, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) will have day to day operational responsibility for all ADK programs, except Conservation and Advocacy, Communications and Development. He/she will manage those program directors and department heads which directly report to the COO. The COO will provide day to day support to the Membership & Development Department directors who directly report to the Executive Director. The Conservation and Advocacy Director reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for day to day support remains with he/she. As Chief Operating Officer of ADK, s/he will work with the Executive Director to provide leadership and direction to ADK s daily operations and strategic planning process and will implement new programmatic strategic initiatives consistent with her/his responsibilities. The COO will be a member of ADK s senior management team, chaired by the Executive Director and consisting of the COO, Chief Financial Officer, North Country Operations Director, Membership Director and Development Director. The COO will partner with the Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer and Development Director in developing, implementing, and managing the operational executive of the ADK annual budget. ADK enjoys the very valuable benefit of a strong working partnership between member volunteers and its staff. The volunteers supply expertise in many fields needed by ADK to successfully run its programs and operations. Member volunteers contribute thousands of hours of sweat equity each year offering professional and knowledgeable advice to staff and helping maintain our physical facilities in optimal shape. The COO will work with the CEO, ADK's President and volunteer leadership and staff to maximize the benefits from volunteer participation in the Club's operations and validate their contributions. 1

2 Responsibilities: Program Operational Leadership: Provide effective and inspiring leadership by being actively involved in programs and services, developing a broad and deep knowledge of all programs. The Executive Director will supervise and direct advocacy, legal, risk management, communications and development programs and services. Identify opportunities for ADK to leverage cross-program strengths to develop and take advantage of new opportunities and/or to address organizational challenges. Under the direction of the Executive Director, lead, coach, develop, and retain ADK s high performance senior management team with an emphasis on developing capacity in strategic analysis and planning and program budgeting. Develop and implement training programs to expand the capacity of all staff. Prepare and submit an annual operational budget for the Adirondack Mountain Club inclusive of all programs and operations, manage effectively within this budget, insure that all departments manage within the approved budget, and report accurately on a monthly basis on progress made and challenges encountered. Ensure the continued financial viability of ADK s operational units through sound fiscal management External Relationship Development: The Executive Director and the Development Director will manage and cultivate existing relationship with donors, philanthropic organizations and other funders to secure and expand recurring revenue streams. Support and assistance from the COO is expected, anticipated, and encouraged. The Executive Director will publicly represent ADK with the media and external constituency groups including community, governmental, environmental, recreational and other private organizations and build excitement for ADK s mission. At the direction of the Executive Director, the Chief Operating Officer may perform some external relationship development. Strategic Plan Implementation: Provide programmatic leadership and input for all strategic plan implementation processes with the Executive Director, staff, and Volunteer Leadership. Coach program directors as they implement the strategic plan and transition program operations. Develop and implement a system for tracking and reporting on the progress of the strategic plan implementation. Business Development Opportunities Strategically market ADK and develop relations with state agencies, not for profit and business organizations and individuals that maximize opportunities for revenue growth and program development. Marketing with for profit organizations is encouraged, but must be evaluated by the Executive Director prior to initiation. 2

3 Develop and enhance revenue-generating activities and seek new business opportunities. Manage mission-oriented program areas in a manner that builds the community/individual support to assist in the achievement of fundraising goals. Develop and oversee implementation of a comprehensive retail, marketing and sales plan. Oversight/coordination of all facility operations (MSC, Heart Lake, JBL, and HPIC). Oversight/coordination of all Field Programs, Education, Retail, and Publications operations. Supervise and support department head reports in management of their specific areas of responsibility including annual evaluation, communication, and facilitation of activities. Financial/Strategic Planning Serve as senior management team member to develop, execute, and insure the success of ADK mission and financial goals, objectives, and initiatives. Oversee the development, implementation, and management of departmental budgets, including capital, payroll, and financial analysis in conjunction with Controller. Development and management of capital projects budgets. Oversee and approve contract negotiations. Oversee and direct preparation of annual organizational business plans, including individual work plans developed by staff, achieving long-term progress towards the ADK Strategic Plan. Oversee the development and implantation of departmental master and working plans, with emphasis on strategic management for financial sustainability. Collaborate with department managers and committee chairs on the planning, evaluation, updating, completion, and implementation of facility master plans and assigned special projects. Collaborate with Executive Director and volunteer leadership to review, revise, implement, and evaluate ADK s strategic planning document on an as needed basis. Leadership/Administration Lead and develop staff as a focused and unified team by outlining mission and financial goals, communicating expectations and roles, and creating a cohesive and cooperative effort. Oversight/coordination of ADK s organizational human resource policies and procedures. Provide information updates on department programs for the annual report and other operation reports for the Board of Directors and Executive Committee. Develop and maintain communication with the senior management team, department heads, staff, Executive Committee, Board of Directors, committee chairs, chapters, and volunteers as directed by the Executive Director. Supplemental duties/responsibilities to support other ADK operations/functions as requested. Ability to work in a demanding and diverse work environment as part of a management team. 3

4 Knowledge of conservation, outdoor education, recreation, and stewardship programs, and an understanding of and interest in the mission and goals of the Adirondack Mountain Club. Classification and Work Schedule: Exempt/Full time Work schedule: Monday-Friday, with variable days/hours as require. Schedule may include weekends and evenings and vary depending on travel to other ADK operations, events, and meetings. The COO will be required to attend quarterly meetings of the ADK Board of Directors, and periodic meetings on Saturdays approximately five times per year. Qualifications: This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual with extensive program management experience to grow and further develop proven programs that has already made significant impact. The successful candidate will partner with the ED and work collaboratively with a high-performance management team. Specific requirements include: Minimum BS/BA degree with at least 10 years of experience and a track record in senior program management. Experience with management with not-for-profit organizations is a plus. Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach a senior-level staff to manage and develop high-performance teams and develop and implement program strategies. Deep experience in program budgeting and fiscal management. Track record of effectively leading a direct service organization with a complex array of programs with the ability to leverage strengths across program areas; excellent project management skills. Analytic and decisive decision maker with the ability to prioritize and communicate to staff key objectives and tactics necessary to achieve organizations goals. Ability to point to specific examples of having led organizational transformation projects and program development Past experience managing human resources function including personnel, compensation, and recruiting. Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation. Fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures. Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent public speaking skills. Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, flexible, and innovative approach to operational management. 4
