1 333 West 4 th Street Bethlehem, PA Position Announcement: Executive Director, New Bethany Ministries Bethlehem, PA July, 2018 New Bethany Ministries ( NBM ), Bethlehem, PA seeks a new Executive Director to lead our work in creating opportunities for a secure future for the homeless, hungry, poor and mentally ill. NBM s goal is to help families and individuals who are capable to become self-sufficient and live independently. We also strive to identify and optimize opportunities and improve the quality of life for our guests who cope with mental illness, disabilities, and/or extreme poverty. The Board seeks an effective leader for the next stages of New Bethany s path of service. The key responsibilities of that individual will be to: Maintain NBM s high quality, efficient and effective program delivery Provide compassionate and effective leadership to staff and volunteers Display passion for and dedication to the issues and concerns of the people NBM serves Understand and be committed to the individuals and families NBM serves Lead efforts to obtain resources from public and private sources. Sustain NBM s culture of community service and voluntarism Work with the Board in the key governance roles of planning, oversight, stewardship, and resource development. Build NBM s capacity for future service Collaborate with the Board to prepare NBM for the future via strategic planning. New Bethany Ministries profile New Bethany s goal is to help families and individuals who are capable become self-sufficient and live independently. New Bethany provide services in nutrition, housing, case management, financial trusteeship and advocacy. NBM s office, and the bulk of our programs, are in Southside Bethlehem with additional affordable housing programs in Allentown and Coplay, PA Founded in 1986, NBM is guided by principles of charity and service to those in need. The organization s human resources include a staff of 15 FTE, 900 volunteers who provided over 20,000 hours in 2017, a vigorous and engaged Board of Directors, and many friends in the community, including a diverse and enthusiastic group of faith communities, volunteer groups from area businesses and institutions, and nearby colleges. New Bethany has strong relationships with many local foundations, corporations, and government offices that serve the needy.

2 NBM is a strong organization dedicated to meeting the needs of vulnerable residents of the Lehigh Valley, serving a population constantly facing new challenges to their economic and social well-being. The desire for social justice and the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion are core elements of NBM activities. Position and responsibilities The Executive Director (ED) is chief executive officer of NBM and uses the position to effectively deliver services, and advance NBM s vision and value to our clients, volunteers, staff, partners, and supporters. That includes clearly communicating New Bethany s mission and values, and resource needs to internal and external stakeholders. The ED is the public face of NBM in fundraising and all public relations. The ED uses a combination of passion, commitment, foresight, and strategic skills. It also requires collaboration, facilities management, financial management, nonprofit governance, government relations, human resource management, outreach and marketing, program planning and evaluation, resource development, and relationship management. The ED works to boost revenue, plans for the emerging needs of the population we serve, makes sure that staff and volunteers have the resources required to do their work, uses effective workplace policies and procedures, sustains New Bethany s strong brand and reputation, and works with the Board and the community in a way that will help accomplish our mission. The ED position encompasses a diverse scope of activities. In partnership with the Board, the ED will develop a clear and strategic path for NBM to follow and raise resources to sustain and improve NBM programs and services. In developing and managing the programs and services, the ED will be a confident and authentic leader for the staff. Candidate characteristics The ideal candidate will combine a clear passion to serve New Bethany s population with a track record of success in fulfilling similar responsibilities in other organizations. The candidate will have substantial experience as a manager, supervising staff, delivering sustained positive results, success raising revenue in fundraising, grantwriting, or sales, and excellent writing and communication with internal and external stakeholders. 4 POSITION: Executive Director NEW BETHANY MINISTRIES POSITION DESCRIPTION SUMMARY: The Executive Director is committed to promoting the mission of New Bethany Ministries and is the chief executive officer of the organization. ACCOUNTABILITY: The Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS: The Executive Director has the following primary tasks, which include, but are not limited to: A: Have the primary responsibilities for raising revenue, and acting as the primary representative of NBM in the community 1. Act as primary contact for all major donors; 2. Direct, supervise and implement all public communication of the organization; 3. Direct, supervise and implement fundraising activities and supervise their expenditure, in cooperation with the appropriate committees of the Board; 4. Manage NBM s budgeting and financial accountability, and be a good steward of its financial resources; 5. Encourage community support; 6. Engage in public outreach and education regarding the mission of New Bethany Ministries, the services provided and the people served, and advocate for the organization and its mission: 7. Develop and maintain relationships with local congregations, judicatories, and faith groups of all denominations; 8. Develop a cooperative spirit with other agencies and encourage them to make use of the facilities as appropriate for the target programs and people served; and 9. Collaborate with and provide leadership to groups working on shelter and housing in the Lehigh Valley. B: Lead the management team and staff 1. Direct the development of a multi-year strategic plan for the organization in conjunction with the Board of Directors; 2. Establish annual goals for staff and programs in congruence with the Strategic Plan; 3. Direct and supervise staff and function as the personnel officer for the corporation; 4. Oversee staff training and professional development; 5. Conduct regular staff meetings; 6. Provide staffing assistance to the various programs of NBM as needed; 7. Oversee information technology, including hardware and software maintenance; and 8. Perform all other appropriate duties as assigned by the Board. 4

5 C: Ensure the quality and sustainability of the organization s programs, properties and services 1. Assure facilities and programs are safe and well maintained, and comply with legal requirements; 2. Conduct regular reviews of program s efficiency and viability 3. Develop new programs in line with the organization s strategic plan 4. In cooperation with the Board s property committee, develop ongoing capital improvement plan QUALIFICATIONS: 1. A Master s Degree is desirable. Significant experience from equivalent employment and/or other advanced study will be considered; 2. Social work or human services experience; 3. Experience in administrative oversight functions, including supervising personnel; 4. Experience in fundraising and grant proposal writing; 5. Employee must be at least 21 years old; 6. Employee must be of good moral character, may not have been convicted of a violent or drug related felony and must be able to perform his/her primary responsibilities with reasonable skill and safety. Exceptions require approval of the Executive Committee and/or the Board; 7. Employee may not have an Indicated or Founded Child Abuse Offense. GENERAL: The Executive Director is a full-time, exempt (salaried) employee of NBM and as such is covered by the applicable portions of the Employee Handbook. Evening, holiday and weekend work will be required from time to time. The Executive Director may have to visit New Bethany Ministries facilities, funders, and partners in multiple locations in and around the Lehigh Valley. Revised July
