2 From shop floor to boardroom, health and safety is critical to a company s success HEALTH AND SAFETY 2.8m people work in the UK manufacturing industry Last year there were 19,500 reported health and safety incidents that kept employees away from work for more than three days In 2013, 4,500 workers reported major injuries Shockingly 31 manufacturing workers died whilst at work in 2013 The actual cost (human and financial) of poor health and safety in manufacturing is staggering. Workplace injuries and ill health (excluding cancer) cost the UK economy an estimated 13.8 billion in 2010/11 with manufacturing and construction contributing a large proportion of this cost. This must-attend conference will improve your knowledge to allow you to implement the highest levels of safety, starting with boardroom decisions and filtering down to factory and plant floor level. Many inadequate safety issues can too often be rooted in failures of leadership. Not including health and safety as a business risk on board room level therefore can have tragic as well as financially damaging results. The bi-product of conducting health and safety as an incremental part of your ongoing strategy will be the improvement of bottom line costs that will directly impact on your company s profit. We wanted to give our staff the opportunity to have tools that would enhance this process at the same time as being beneficial to their all-round wellbeing. Given such rapid expansion, Mechatronic recognised something needed to be done to help employees cope with the heightened pressures of day-in, day-out demands. Managing director Richard Evans settled upon Emotional Intelligence Workshops, facilitated by Jane Biography: Richard is the managing director of Mechatronic solutions and is a chartered engineer. He has started three companies and has been director of a finance company as well as a business angel investing in environmental products. His current business of 25 years serves a world class client base in designing and building manufacturing solutions from concept to reality using high tech solutions in robotics and control crossing all the disciplines of mechanical and electrical engineering.

5 Adrian Hirst BSc, PhD, Dip. Occ.Hyg, FFOH, CMIOSH, British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) Workplace exposures: Addressing health as well as safety For several decades the UK has made continuous improvements in safety performance, making the UK manufacturing industry one of the safest in the world. However the same level of improvement has not been achieved with worker health. A quarter of a century after the introduction of the COSHH regulations, thousands of workers die early each year as a result of exposures to hazardous substances at work, many more suffer ill health as a result of their work. Worker ill health presents a significant cost to the manufacturing industry. Controlling exposures to chemical and physical hazards in the workplace presents some unique challenges, but it can be achieved. What is more, improvements in health, as well as safety performance, can achieve direct reduction of costs. This presentation explains how good control practice can be used to reduce costs at the same time as creating a healthier workplace. Biography: Adrian Hirst has worked in occupational hygiene for 25 years in both academic and consultancy roles. He is a chartered occupational hygienist and chartered safety practitioner. He is currently a part time senior lecturer at Manchester University as well as working as a consultant occupational hygienist for Hirst Consulting Ltd. Adrian has worked extensively in industry covering areas as diverse as automotive, pharmaceuticals, aerospace and defence as well as oil and gas extraction. Adrian is a council member of the British Occupational Hygiene Society. One major factor in the design and construction of the new facility has been a desire to set best practice in HSE standards. AkzoNobel will share some of the successes and learning from the completed stages of the project and show how these are now being applied to the ongoing phases of the project and for the ongoing operation to ensure that HSE is at the heart of the culture of the site. Nick Turnebell biography: Nick joined AkzoNobel in August 2013, having previously worked for the Ahlstrom Corporation where he was the UK HSE manager and corporate auditor. His major success was seeing one of his sites go seven years without a lost time injury; this result was delivered by initiating a good reporting system which was immersed in continuous improvement which involved all personnel. Nick also served with Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue service for 14 years in the retained service and applied the tools which he used in the workplace to assist in keeping his colleagues safe on the fire ground. Allen Smith biography: Allen has over 30 years experience working for the former ICI and AkzoNobel in the coatings and paint industry across the UK, Ireland, Western Europe and Africa. His former engineering background has helped him establish himself as a respected specialist within the AkzoNobel decorative paints business providing professional advice and guidance on improvements and implementation of a wide range of topics including process safety, machinery safety, ISO 14001, contractor management, security and construction management. Most recently he has been working to implement HSE best practice in both the construction phase and as part of the inherent safe design of the equipment to be used at the AkzoNobel Ashington plant. 6 Joscelyn Shaw, Head of Policy, British Safety Council New job, old risks Research has shown that those who are young or new to the job are three times more likely to be killed or injured than their workmates who ve been on the job for a year or more. As we come out of the recession, what could this potentially mean for managers and businesses as a whole? It may be the case that evidence has shown that these injuries and illnesses may be the result of a lack of training and information, work experience and possibly even a lack of confidence; but more importantly there is also evidence that there are other repercussions to the business that may be redressed by putting in place effective leadership and communication that incorporates health and safety as part of the business agenda. Is there more you could be considering in terms of health and safety when it comes to stepping up out of the recession? Biography: Joscelyne, as head of policy, sits within the British Safety Council s policy and communications team. For more than half a century the British Safety Council has been a trusted guide to excellent health, safety and environmental management. We have educated millions of workers and made hundreds of thousands of workplaces safer for everyone. We do this by sharing information, supporting, advising, educating and campaigning. We are a not-for-profit organisation. Before joining the British Safety Council, she was a research consultant working across health, safety and environmental management and risk communication. Some key work she lead involved developing reporting and benchmarking tools, as well as case studies on business benefits and the value of leadership for the Health and Safety Executive that helped to raise the profile of health and safety within the business and risk management agenda. She has an MSc from Lund University, Sweden in Environmental Management and Policy, and a BA (Hons) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
