1 Supervisory Skills Certificate The Supervisory Skills Certificate Program provides an introduction to the skills and information necessary to being an effective supervisor within the Perelman SOM. Instructors for the program represent a variety of offices across the Perelman SOM and University, including the Office of General Counsel, the Office of International Programs, the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Programs, Perelman SOM Human Resources, and the Office of Organization Effectiveness. To receive the certificate, participants must complete a core series of classes and 2 additional elective courses. All classes are half-day except where noted. Detailed Course Descriptions Core Classes: (Participants must complete all) Interpersonal Dynamics - Understanding Your Style We are all different. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI ) classifies different ways that people relate to one another and provides powerful insights into our own communication styles and the communication styles of others. Understanding your style and how it compares to someone else's can lead to better communication, more productivity, increased employee satisfaction and ultimately better results. Participants must complete the MBTI in advance to participate in this course. Performance Management for Supervisors Effective supervision depends on strong performance management practices. This course is designed for supervisors, both new and experienced, who want to increase their skills related to: Building effective relationships with employees Setting performance expectations Providing feedback and taking corrective action Coaching and counseling Conducting effective performance appraisals Dealing with an employee who is not meeting expectations NOTE: This is a full-day session Policies Overview for Supervisors What does the policy say? The Department of Organization Effectiveness is offering a half-day training session on critical policies to know as a supervisor. Some topics which will be discussed include: Hiring/Posting Conflict of Interest

3 Paid Time Off Terminations Participants must complete 15-minute online module in order to participate in this course. Alphabet Soup of Supervision: FMLA, FLSA, and Other Acronyms You Need to Know What can get you fired? What can get you sued? The Office of Organization Effectiveness is offering a half-day training session on critical issues in supervision. Some topics which will be discussed include: Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Sexual Harassment Awareness Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) Flexible Work Options Participants must complete 15-minute online module in order to participate in this course. Interviewing and Selection Do you recruit or interview potential hires? This session will help you learn how to: Write effective job criteria Post a job Get appropriate candidates Design interview questions Avoid illegal questions during an interview Select the best candidate Electives: (Must take minimum of 2 to complete certificate. Coaching Skills for Supervisors Most managers are aware that the old school command and control method of supervising simply isn't as effective as involving employees in their development. From determining the appropriate coaching approach, to implementing a comprehensive development plan, to

4 conducting an effective coaching session, this program provides the tools and techniques to increase any employee's performance. Successful completion of this course will increase your knowledge and ability to: Recognize and apply the five approaches to coaching Employ inquiry and advocacy skills when communicating Implement the steps to effective coaching Follow the four-step preparation process for conducting a coaching session Conflict Management using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Effectively dealing with conflict is an essential management skill. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator training can help managers harness type awareness in conflict management. Learn: How psychological type preferences affect us in conflict A unique three-stage model for managing conflict through type Ways to best approach, communicate during, and resolve conflict situations Prerequisite: Interpersonal Dynamics, or proof of recent attendance at a similar Myers- Briggs Type Indicator seminar. Cross-Cultural Communication for Supervisors Penn is a multicultural institution, with students, faculty, and staff from all over the world. This makes for a very diverse, vibrant community and at times, a rather confusing one. This workshop will provide supervisors with general advice on how to manage cultural gaps in their workplace for their staff and themselves. This session will be conducted by Dr. Rodolfo Altamirano, Director of the International Student and Scholar Services, and Dr. Patricia Tsao, Senior Researcher Investigator at the Perelman SOM. The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Workshop for Team Leaders Improve the cohesion and functioning of your team by applying The Five Dysfunctions model. Participants will: Understand the expectations of a cohesive team Gain a basic understanding of the degree to which the team meets the expectations. Identify steps they can take to improve their teams functioning
