1 POSITION DESCRIPTION UME Mission Shaped Ministry Consultant ABOUT THE UNITING CHURCH IN AUSTRALIA Our purpose: Our values: The mission of the Synod operational areas is to inspire, empower and support the Uniting Church in all its varied expressions to live out our Christian faith Our values will be generous and inclusive, honest and accountable, diligent and professional, just and compassionate, hopeful and courageous The Uniting Church in Australia (UCA) is one of the largest not for profit and religious organisations in Australia. Broadly, each state is called a Synod and has a governing council with its own boards to manage its affairs. The Synods are drawn together through a National Assembly. Uniting Mission and Education s (UME) role as a board of the Synod of NSW and the ACT is to assist the Church to provide education, theological insight, strategy, research and resources for leadership, discipleship, ministry and mission. UME manages the operations of United Theological College (UTC) and supports the work of Uniting Aboriginal & Islander Christian Congress. ABOUT THE ROLE This half-time position sits within the UME Resource Team, as a project running from March 1 through to June 30, The UME Mission Shaped Ministry Consultant will work closely with other UME and Uniting staff to develop the NSW/ACT Synod s capacity to resource congregations and presbyteries in the development of local mission. The half time position will be focused on the implementation of UME and Uniting commitments to collaborative leadership development, community engagement, a healthy environment for innovation, and the resourcing of new expressions of church. This role will involve Working collaboratively with the MSM team to develop and grow the MSM plan in the Synod Training through the Mission Shaped Ministry suite of courses, in collaboration with the MSM team Development of mentoring framework for MSM Engagement with Presbyteries to develop mission training opportunities Development of resources for use in the Mission Shaped Ministry project. Being a contact person for MSM inquiries from congregations and presbyteries. Development of networks and communities of practice KEY RESPONSIBILITIES This role will take responsibility for oversight of the following areas of UME s work: Development of a team of educators across NSW/ACT Synod Curation of resources for mission related education Event planning related to mission training and formation Consultancy with presbyteries, congregations, agencies and schools 1 Uniting Mission and Education PULSE TEAM CONSULTANT October 2017

2 Development of learning pathways for ministry with emerging generations Development of online environments for mentoring and mission development Ongoing support of the Synod s ministry formation program In addition to those outlined above, specific responsibilities also include: Reading and understanding the Basis of Union, and having a preparedness to work within the polity and ethos of the Uniting Church in Australia Abiding by the policies and procedures of the Uniting Church in Australia Synod of NSW and the ACT Having a genuine willingness to embrace challenges as they arise and to work flexibly in support of the overall key objectives of Uniting Mission and Education and the wider Synod. A willingness to work a flexible schedule when required Follow policy and procedures in relation to workplace health and safety Participate in maintaining a safe working environment for both yourself and others in the workplace Undertaking additional duties as directed KEY RELATIONSHIPS The MSM Consultant will be a member of the UME Resourcing Team, working particularly with the Mission Shaped Ministry teams. Deciding and initiating action Makes prompt, clear decisions which may involve tough choices or considered risks Takes responsibility for actions, projects and people Takes initiative, acts with confidence and works under own direction QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE Essential Demonstrated experience and passion for adult education, mission and discipleship Membership of the Uniting Church in Australia Demonstrated reflective theological capacity, which includes contemporary reflections on the nature of God s mission and the church s place in that mission, particularly with emerging generations, and proven ability to apply this in prophetic ways across the differing contexts of the Church. Intermediate level skills in computing, communication and social media, and proven ability to apply this in ways which enhance relationship building and networking. Proven experience in providing effective and strategic leadership, inspiration and processes which grows capacity; develops and furthers agreed goals and achieves desired outcomes. Demonstrated ability in working effectively with diverse cultural, generational, institutional, geographic and other communities. Demonstrated commitment to personal and professional growth.
