14 COSHH Regulations Have a written assessment in place for every anticipated workplace exposure (Regulation 6) Prevent exposure, or implement suitable measures to control exposure to those substances through all routes of entry (Regulation 7) Use all control measures provided and maintain them to ensure ongoing performance (Regulations 8+9) Where there is concern exposure is not adequately controlled, conduct monitoring and health surveillance to ensure protection of employees (Regulations 10+11) Inform employees about all areas of the assessment (Regulation 12) Make plans for in the event of spillage, first-aid or fire (Regulation 13)

15 Quantitative estimate of exposure Without in-depth chemical knowledge it may be difficult to qualitatively estimate the risk through inhalation Where level of risk by inhalation cannot be qualitatively estimated, a quantitative estimate must be conducted This is done through personal monitoring

17 Workplace Exposure Limits Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL) is a concentration of hazardous substance in the air over a given time period which must not be exceeded Two time averages used: 8hr long term TWA 15min STEL (Short term exposure limit) Listed in EH40

18 If you find an exposure limit is being breached Take immediate action to reduce exposure Take immediate action to re-establish control of exposure Conduct a more detailed survey Review 12 months later Compare to WELs

23 Vibration The Control of Vibration at Work Regulations came into force on 6 July 2005 For Hand Arm Vibration, the regulations introduced a daily Exposure action value of 2.5 m/s 2 A(8) and a daily Exposure limit value of 5 m/s 2 A(8) that employees should not be exposed Health surveillance should be carried out where exposure is significant
