1 Kalamazoo Country Club Kalamazoo, Michigan Club Manager (CM) Search About The Club Kalamazoo Country Club (KCC) is a full service Club established in 1909 to serve its members and their families with outstanding personalized experiences. Its golf course, designed by Tom Bendalow, is its centerpiece amenity, and the quality of the golf experience, complemented by a no tee time policy, is exceptional. The existing KCC property was purchased from Albert R. White for $12,000 dollars on May 24, This rolling farmland is located on the north side of Whites Lake extending 50 acres to Whites Road. Additional property was purchased over the years to accommodate the championship golf course, racquet sports, pool, and clubhouse facilities. The first nine-hole golf course was opened and put into play in the summer of While the golf course was under construction, the members used a temporary four-hole course. BC Dickinson, House Chairman, supervised the design and construction of a Clubhouse that included both men s and women s locker rooms. On September 11, 1922, the Club purchased land extending west to Oakland Drive for the second nine holes. They were built and put into play in 1923, giving KCC a full 18-hole course. In the fall of 1927, a topographical survey of the Club property was obtained preliminary to a new watering system for all greens, tees and fairways, as well as for the Clubhouse gardens. In 1930, a comprehensive irrigation plan was supervised & completed by BC Dickinson and adopted by the Board of Governors. The clubhouse features alternatives for dining, and members enjoy multiple bar/lounge options as well. An active social calendar, including multiple clubs within the club options, exists and provides for year round activities for the family. These clubs include such things as the KCC Book Club, KCC Bridge Club, KCC Mommy and Me Club, KCC Gourmet Food and Wine Club, and many more. The Club hosts a number of catered events and activities as well, and is a sought out destination for weddings, business meetings, and other special events, partially due to special views corridors across the Whites Lake the Club is situated on. The Club is very family oriented and provides an active youth center, which allows adult members a childcare option while they enjoy other club amenities. KCC also offers great tennis and platform tennis (winter) activities, as well as a very active aquatics program in the summer months. Kalamazoo itself is home to Western Michigan University, is a strong family centric community with good schools and a generally stable economic environment.

Junior, Social and Junior Social memberships are also available. Food sales are approximately $1.225M, with Beverage sales running approximately $550K annually. Overall operations at the Club, including dues, sales, golf and recreational fees, etc., are approximately $4.0M. The Club is organized as a 501(C) 7, tax exempt, not for profit entity. There are approximately 16,500 rounds of golf played annually. The Role The Club Manager at Kalamazoo Country Club is ultimately responsible for all areas within the clubhouse, essentially being the face of these operations, as well as other clubhouse operations including valet, locker rooms, racquet sports and pool operations. The CM leads a team comprised of the Controller, Executive Chef, Grill and Dining Room Managers, Social Events Manager, Director of Membership and Marketing, Pool Director, Tennis Professional, Facilities Manager and, ultimately, their respective direct reports, which include personnel in all front house areas. In the KCC organization at present, the Club Manager reports directly to the long tenured Director of Golf/General Manager, who will be retiring in the next few years, whereupon it is expected that the person in this role will move into the GM position. The CM is expected to be the epitome of a modern, progressive, dynamic style of club leadership, representing him/herself in an exceptionally appropriate manner at all times with each constituency of Club involvement---members, guests, staff, vendors and within the greater Kalamazoo community at large. The CM is the primary coordinator of all non-golf operations, including food and beverage budgeting, hiring, training, orientations and teammate culturization, and supervision of associates. Working with appropriate team members, he/she will therefore be utilizing and applying relevant and necessary marketing techniques to drive member usage of food and beverage operations along, assuring member and guest needs and desires are consistently met and often exceeded. Club member and guest satisfaction and enjoyment of the culinary and service experience at Kalamazoo are primary drivers to its overall Club success. Active involvement and oversight of membership recruitment and retention efforts is a critical component of responsibilities as well. The CM, as a strong and highly visible and respectful presence with the membership, must be an exceptional communicator, have adroit personal interactive skills and the maturity to instinctively know how to make members and guests feel that they are known and appreciated. Further, he/she must be able to communicate these expectations to a diverse background staff and get them to understand and execute to those expectations. The KCC community represents an exceptionally varied demographic age range and the CM is the key influence to ensure that these groups are engaged from a food and beverage programming, activities, servicing and experience perspective. 3 younger with more family involvement. The CM must be intuitively engaged an in tune with this very family-centric, fiscally responsible environment, as well as the long tenured members who have supported the Club for many years. Membership satisfaction in the areas of responsibility for the CM must consistently exceed expectations and has historically been integral to its success. Initial Priorities of the Club Manager Employee training and development, looking to ensure that the end to end experience is at a consistently high level Sincere and significant engagement of members, guests and staff, listening to their concerns and suggestions and working closely with the GM to implement appropriate and necessary improvements Assist in designing and instilling a culture where all staff are committed to consistently doing it better everyday Observing, assessing and evaluating the food and beverage operation, working with the GM to identify and create a plan for incremental improvement Performance Metrics Membership satisfaction Food and beverage operations financial performance Employee performance evaluations and satisfaction Club Manager - Business Sense Well-aligned candidates will possess excellent operational, financial and analytic skills and have experience with shaping and elevating club programming and food and dining operations to increase member satisfaction and participation. Ensuring that appropriate and necessary internal controls and developing structure around and maintaining standards and operating procedures aligned with club policies and industry best practices will be critical measures of success. Candidates who can demonstrate an understanding and current use of and success in implementing technology systems and solutions to improve member communications and membership recruitment and retention will be highly regarded. The new Club Manager must be outgoing, genuine and personable and will look forward to being in sincerely engaged with the membership on a regular basis. He/she will interact with the membership, both through the Club s committee structure and through daily contact. Visibility, along with the genuine enjoyment of building member relationships and being in an active and social environment are key attributes for the next Club Manager. Club Governance Kalamazoo Country Club operates under the General Manager (GM) organizational structure. The CM reports to the General Manager. 4 The Individual KCC Clubhouse Manager - Candidate Specifications Qualifications & Experience A strong and passionate leader with strong general club operations and especially strong food and beverage credentials, as well as a proven track record of providing high quality, personalized service in a hospitality or membership constituency setting, and with a personality that is commensurately appropriate to the Kalamazoo Country Club culture. A confident, proactive Team Builder who has a history of attracting, developing and retaining a high performance staff. An intuitive style resulting in a sincere and visibly engaged presence with Members, Guests and Staff; a truly nice people person. Strong and verifiable skills in developing and growing catering sales and banquets, as well as excellent knowledge of multi-dimensional ala carte dining service. A record of developing strong and upwardly successful associates and direct reports. Experience with membership marketing, innovative member events and activities programming, and a good sense of consensus building to larger picture goals and objectives. Education A Bachelor s Degree from a four-year university or college is highly desirable, preferably in Hospitality Management. In lieu of the degree, substantial private club or hospitality experience may be considered. Certified Club Manager (CCM) designation from CMAA, a Certified Food and Beverage Executive (CFBE) designation from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute, or a Certified Food Executive (CFE) through the International Food Service Executives Association (IFSEA) is highly desirable. Other Traits, Skills and Competencies Strong management skills with verifiable strengths in self starting leadership, financial performance, and people skills. The ability to consistently define and achieve goals and objectives. Proven and verifiable leadership qualities with demonstrated ability to direct, coordinate and control all facets of an active food and beverage operation with revenues exceeding $1.7M. Knowledgeable regarding typical club F & B and clubhouse operations critical benchmarking and financial metrics that lead to proactive responses to trending curves. Exceptionally strong communication and facilitation skills, both written and verbal, with the appropriate personal presence, and a desire and ability to interact effectively before diverse constituencies of members, staff, vendors and other people who are part of the success of Kalamazoo Country Club.
