1 Preparing for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) Examinations SYLLABUS / COURSE CALENDAR / READING ASSIGNMENTS Richard Propster, SPHR-CA, Instructor Mery Propster, SPHR, Instructor Course Title: Preparing for the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) Examinations (MGMNT ) Registration Number: Meeting dates: Instructors: 1/5/2016 to 3/15/2016 Tuesday Nights Richard Propster, SPHR-CA and Mery Propster, SPHR RandM@Propster.com For questions about enrollment, parking or administrative matters please contact UCLA Extension directly Course Description: This course is designed to help students who plan to sit for the PHR (Professional in Human Resources) or SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources) examinations. The course uses the Human Resource Certification Preparation (HRCP) materials, which are specifically geared toward the PHR and SPHR bodies of knowledge. The course is well-suited to the student who prefers a structured, directed classroom approach to studying for either examination. The course follows a "study roadmap" designed to gradually introduce new subject matter while reinforcing material learned earlier, which helps students retain concepts over time and maximize performance on test day. Motivational and test-taking strategies are covered throughout. Toward the end of the course, instructors work with students to design an individualized final review plan leading up to their test date. Course Objectives: Guided by the instructor, students will cover all major topics in the HRCI Body of Knowledge for the PHR/SPHR examinations. They will gain an overview of the topics in the course lecture with specific attention paid to major HR knowledge areas emphasized in the Body of Knowledge. Students will reinforce their learning through taking test questions and flashcards which are available with the reading material. Expected Learning Outcomes: Students are expected to gain sufficient knowledge and practice to pass the PHR or SPHR examination. Successful completion of the exam involves application of law and/or concepts to factual scenarios, therefore, students should expect to spend a significant amount of study time doing actual practice questions and flashcards in addition to the reading materials.

2 Materials Students are expected to purchase the Complete HRCP Program on their own at hrcp.com/products. After enrolling into this class, please contact Eddie Fisher at to receive a discount code for purchasing the HRCP materials. Students are advised to order all materials as early as possible so that they are ready to begin reading and practice test questions on the first day of class. Internet access required to retrieve course materials. RECOMMENDED ADDITIONAL READING MATERIAL: The HRCP materials are very comprehensive. It is highly recommended that you first take this course, including all tests, and digest all of the HRCP materials before advancing to any further materials. Towards the middle/end of the course you may wish (and will be encouraged) to work through additional materials and practice test questions. The PHR/SPHR Professional in Human Resources Study Guide, by Sandra M. Reed and Anne Bogardus, is recommended. Search for the most recently updated version. Examination Eligibility and Signup The HR Certification Institute requires HR professionals sitting for the PHR or SPHR exams to have a combination of demonstrated work experience and education. Eligibility is determined solely by the HR Certification Institute. If you wish to take the PHR or SPHR exam, you must complete a separate application form online through the HR Certification Institute. Neither the HRCP curriculum nor this course is a substitute for the certification examination. Students are solely responsible for verifying their eligibility to sit for the exam directly with HRCI. For more information on eligibility, exam dates, or to apply to take the exam, visit REQUIRED READING: HRCP materials and accompanying online courseware. Grading. This course is not graded. You will have opportunities to check your own progress, but it is not recorded through UCLA. Also, as previously noted, this grade does not earn you the PHR or SPHR designation you can only obtain that by passing your exam with HRCI. Studying for these course tests will help. Attendance and Participation: It s up to you, but I recommend both. Preparing for a certification exam can be daunting, exhausting, and challenging but also very rewarding! Regular class attendance will help keep you focused and on track. Your instructor is here to help get you through, and your classmates offer camaraderie and additional support. Even if you are behind, haven t done the homework, or otherwise aren t prepared, come to class anyway listening to the discussion will help you absorb material, and if you need it, your instructor will help you design a catch up plan so that you re ready on exam day. Recording: Audio or video recording of this class is subject to UCLA policy and may involve consultation with HRCP regarding the recording of their materials. Class Notes: Class notes are your sole responsibility. It is recommended that you attend class and take notes in order to maximize your performance. TBD dates / other. In the event a holiday or other scheduling conflict arises, the instructor s determination as to any makeup dates will control, however, effort will be made to accommodate students needs. If the instructor is unable to attend a class, an instructor/guest-lecturer (who teaches in

3 the UCLA HR Certificate program and who has taught the PHR/SPHR prep course) will substitute, or class will be rescheduled.
