2017 SHRM Excel Award Categories 20

2017 SHRM Excel Award Eligibility 21 Award Categories The Excel Awards recognize achievements by SHRM chapters and state councils in three categories: Category 1: SERVING HR PROFESSIONALS: Initiatives that support and promote professionals with HR responsibility to be successful business leaders. Activities may be related to certification, professional learning, or skills development.

Excel Award Application Submission 22 Initiative Topic Example of a well-written initiative: What was your goal / objective? How is this strategic? What did you do to work towards / accomplish the goal? What was your outcome / result? Serving the HR Professionals Our goal was to increase SHRM Prep Course attendance by 5% (1 attendee) and increase the number of chapter members attending the SHRM State Conference by 5% (7 attendees). We wanted to bring awareness about the importance of certification and how that can enhance one s career and the great learning opportunities at our state conference. So we developed a marketing and communication plan for the year. Each month there was a some type of communication ( , social media, etc.) and a prize associated with responding to the study prep course and state conference communication. We increased our SHRM prep course by 4 attendees (20 %) and increased our state conference attendees by 8 (7%) Example: We gave away the following items to attendees: - Grand Prize: Fall 2016 SHRM Certification Prep Course, Materials and SHRM Exam Fee - Chapter Annual Membership - SHRM Annual Membership - Full Attendee Registration for SHRM State Conference in October

2017 SHRM Excel Award Eligibility 23 Category 2: ADVANCING THE HR PROFESSION Initiatives advancing the HR profession by creating awareness with or supporting key constituents including workplace, government and regulatory representatives, employers, schools, media and the community at large. Activities may be outreach and awareness programs, government or public affairs, raising funds and supporting the SHRM Foundation s annual initiative to build inclusive organizations, or focus on key issues such as inclusion, diversity, or workforce readiness.

Excel Award Application Submission 24 Initiative Topic Example of a well-written initiative: What was your goal / objective? How is this strategic? What did you do to work towards / accomplish the goal? What was your outcome / result? Advancing the HR Profession Provide education to our members and non-members on employment law. There is no local affordable education on this topic and we wanted this to be a building block course for our community professionals. We want to be the HR Resource in our community. Our goal was to reach 3 outlying counties and at least 15 different businesses. Obtained Recertification Credit: The Board worked with Mountain States Employers Council and the EEOC Field Office to provide 4.5 hours of SHRM PDCs. The educational topics included "What's Trending in Employment Law", "Harassment Prevention for Managers and Supervisors", "EEOC's Strategic Enforcement Priorities and What HR can do to Ensure Compliance", and "7 Essential Steps for Determining and Defending Employee Discipline". Promotion: We promoted our event at local Chamber meetings, Chamber Newsletters and on social media. We contacted the large employers in the 4 counties and encouraged participation from not only human resource professionals, but also managers and line level supervisors. We promoted SHRM and HRCI continuing education to all certified members in our area. We also provide a quarterly to all members that includes employment law and legislative updates not only on a national, but local level. We had a total of 75 attendees from Sweetwater, Lincoln and Uinta Counties. There were also a total of 24 different businesses in attendance (private business owners, large corporations, city government and education). We added two new members to our chapter. From this presentation, we have been recognized in the community as the leading HR resource and included in several local and state committees.

2017 SHRM Excel Award Eligibility 25 Category 3: ENHANCING THE SHRM COMMUNITY Initiatives providing programs and services that support SHRM, meet members needs, or further the chapter or state council efforts. Activities may include efforts to foster member engagement, retention and acquisition, volunteer development and recognition.

Excel Award Application Submission 26 Initiative Topic Example of a well-written initiative: What was your goal / objective? How is this strategic? What did you do to work towards / accomplish the goal? What was your outcome / result? Enhancing the SHRM Community Membership: Maintain Chapter Growth The 2016 GBR SHRM Strategic Plan included a goal of a 4% increase in our membership. The objective of this initiative was to assist in maintaining our "Large Chapter Status" and engage membership. Chapter growth is essential to the long-term sustainability and impact of our chapter and advancement of the profession. The more diverse our membership, the companies/industries represented, GBR SHRM has a broader reach and a higher impact in our city and surrounding areas. To achieve this goal, several tactics were taken. First, we hosted an At-Large Membership Drive and HR Social and Networking event in conjunction with the GBR SHRM mini-seminar in March This event was extremely well attended and allowed us to discuss the benefits of membership in a relaxed environment after the seminar. Second, we offered a "Summer Membership Drive" during the summer months to again target our At- Large members and members from 2015 who had not renewed. Third, we focused our efforts on working closely with our two SHRM Student Chapters by allowing 3 officers from each chapter to attend our monthly chapter meetings free of charge to ensure their exposure to the profession and networking opportunities. As the future of our chapter, the board approved reducing student membership dues from $180 to $25. Finally, personal s from the chapter president were sent to those members who had not renewed to remind them of the values and benefits of being a member. The outcome of this strategic goal and related activities was a decrease in GBR SHRM membership by 2%.This decrease was as a result of a large employer in the area relocating out of state and losing 8 members from that company.
