13 In the News It s Time to Comply with Overtime Rules The U.S. Department of Labor issued its final regulations changing the salary threshold for employees to remain exempt under what are commonly called the white collar exemptions for executive, administrative and professional employees. Here are some important things to know. The rule extends overtime protections to 4.2 million workers who are not currently eligible under federal law. The new salary threshold has changed from $23,660 per year ($455 per week) to $47,476 per year ($913 per week). Employees who do not meet this new threshold must be paid overtime. The new salary threshold for the highly compensated employees exemption changed from $100,000 to $134,004, or the 90 th percentile of full-time salaried workers nationally. The final rule did not include a change to the duties tests. The Department of Labor will increase the salary threshold every three years, beginning January 1, Employers must comply with the new regulations by December 1, More detailed information can be found on the Department of Labor s website at SHRM Foundation Scholarships For HR Professionals Academic Scholarships New for 2016!
