3 TAELLN401A Address adult language, literacy and RPL Overview of the RPL process is the way that the knowledge and skills that you have attained through your work and life experience are recognised, so that you can be issued a nationally recognised qualification. It is a process of gathering evidence. Your assessor checks the evidence at each stage in the process and once they have sufficient evidence they can assess you as competent. You are responsible for gathering and submitting the evidence that your assessor will need. It is your assessor s responsibility to advise, guide and support you throughout the process of gathering evidence. Do not hesitate to ask your assessor questions at any stage. The above graphic shows the different elements in the RPL process. A description of the process is on the following page. TAELLN401A Language Literacy and Numeracy_RPL_CG_V2.1 Page 1

4 Elements of the RPL process Application form and self-assessment Complete and submit the application form and self-assessment in this document. You will also need to provide details of your work history for the past 3 years. Your resume should be attached to your application. Third party verification Ask your assessor for advice on the most appropriate person to complete the third party verification form in this document. Usually, this would be your current supervisor or manager. They need to be in a position to confirm your skills and experience from their own observation. A previous supervisor, manager or work colleague may also be appropriate. Your assessor will advise you if this is the case. Once the form is completed, submit this to your assessor. Your assessor will contact the third party to authenticate the evidence. Qualifications You will need to submit a certified copy of any qualifications, licences or tickets that you hold to your assessor. They may assist in providing evidence towards this unit of competency. 1. Make copies of all the certificates that you hold, including the transcripts of units. 2. Take the originals and the copies to a Justice of the Peace and ask the JP to certify the copies. 3. Submit the certified copies to your assessor. Gather and submit documentary evidence There is a list of suggested documentary evidence in this document. Refer to the list. Tick each item on the list that you are able to provide. List any other types of documentary evidence that you can provide. If you can provide copies to your assessor, this is recommended. You can also ask your assessor to peruse originals and then hand them back to you. Note: If you cannot provide documentary evidence, this does not necessarily mean that you cannot RPL the qualification. In this case it is likely that your assessor will ask you to complete selected practical activities. Competency conversation A competency conversation is a meeting between you and your assessor, where you discuss and explain your work experience. This enables your assessor to confirm your knowledge. It is an informal discussion - not an examination. The competency conversation may be face to face or by telephone, Skype or other means of communication. 5 Your assessor will make notes of your responses. They may ask if you consent to having your responses recorded, so that they have an accurate and complete record. You have the right to refuse recording of your voice or videoing the meeting. There is a list of the questions that your assessor will ask in this document. We have also provided hints as to the key areas that you will need to talk about. We recommend that you read the questions and hints beforehand, so that you can think about and prepare your responses. Note: Your assessor may suggest that you submit typed answers prior to holding the competency conversation, as this can reduce the time and cost of the RPL process. If your typed answers are sufficient, the competency conversation may not be necessary. Assessment of Competency Once all of the elements above have been completed, your assessor will review the evidence and make a judgement as to whether it is sufficient to confirm your competency. If at this stage the evidence is sufficient, the registered training organisation will be able to issue your certificate or statement of attainment. (A Certificate is for a full qualification. A Statement of Attainment is for a partial qualification such as a single unit of competency) If there are evidence gaps, your assessor will advise you on the next step. This may be: gathering further documentary evidence; or completing practical activities as instructed by your assessor If, after all evidence is complete, your assessor identifies that there are gaps in your skills or knowledge, they will recommend that you undertake training in order to bridge the gaps. If the registered training organisation offers training in this unit of competency, they will conduct your training. If the organisation does not offer training in the unit, they will recommend an organisation that does, and collaborate with that organisation to complete your assessment.
