1 Office of Black Student Affairs Student Job Description All positions are work study and 15 hrs/wk 1) OBSA STUDENT MANAGER FOR THE DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. ANNUAL CELEBRATION Description: Coordinate and support the planning and implementation of one of OBSA s most high profile campuswide events! Help create a month-long series of engaging, student-focused and service oriented recognition events to celebrate and further the legacy and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. While the celebration is month-long, the planning will occur year round and requires significant advance preparation for successful execution. Use your knowledge as a student to help the OBSA professional staff select a speaker for the annual keynote, collaborate with other students, faculty and staff to develop an MLK series of events, and gain useful leadership, organizational, professional and planning experience. Provide essential student feedback for continued success. This position runs fall-winter, with opportunities for spring employment. Requirements: Rising junior or senior ONLY Strong organization and time management Strong oral and written communication skills Collaboration Leadership experience Public Speaking Knowledge of campus resources Interest in and passion for the legacy of Dr. King Passionate about educating others through collaborative, creative and educational programming. Familiarity/ease with negotiating professional relationships Facilitation Event management Duties Assist the OBSA Dean in developing the MLK Celebration anchor event/identifying an appropriate keynote Co-develop the MLK annual theme statement with the MLK Committee; attend and contribute regularly to MLK committee meetings Assist in development of a 1-2 week-long MLK programming curriculum Identify campus partnerships for collaborative MLK-congruous events for OBSA Develop submission process for MLK events from around CUC; develop content for MLK booklet (print and online) highlighting all MLK events occurring in CUC and local communities: for these tasks, must and will collaborate with OBSA GRADUATE STUDENT MANAGER FOR SOCIAL MEDIA, MARKETING AND ARTS ENGAGEMENT

2 Develop MLK day of service in collaboration with OBSA STUDENT MANAGER FOR DIVERSITY LEADERSHIP Share insights and recommendations from student perspective for the good of the committee Develop special pre-keynote reception in OBSA house and coordinate keynote walk-over in collaboration with OBSA STUDENT MANAGER FOR MENTORSHIP (event will be for OBSA Mentorship participants and staff only) This position reports to the Administrative Events Coordinator, and attends the MLK Committee meetings alongside the OBSA Dean. ******************************* 2) OBSA STUDENT MANAGER FOR MENTORSHIP Description: Gain great leadership experience, facilitations and people skills that will help shape your professional identity and promote success in any career! Manage communication for participants in the OBSA Mentorship Program, assist with mentor recruitment, interviews and selection in preparation for a September program launch. Assist with the mentee review and matching process during winter and spring. Coordinate mentor training events. Use spring and summer terms to design and prepare a mix of educational, cultural and social activities to supplement the one on one and group mentorship activities that will occur throughout fall and winter. Support the OBSA-generated events and activities by heavily promoting them to mentorship participants and adding unique incentives for participation as directed. In fall and winter, support mentors in locating academic, cultural, mental health and identity-based resources for incoming students enrolled in the OBSA Mentorship program. Assist in selection and helping develop program outcomes that encourage students to participate actively in Mentorship throughout the year. Be a role model for your peers and first year students, actively and positively impact the success of OBSA, and find creative ways to assist students of African descent in the college transition. This position runs fall-winter, with opportunities for work in spring and summer; a temporary mentorship summer internship will be created should the student be unable to work during spring and summer terms. 3 Cultural competency Conflict resolution Event Planning Prior experience as a participant in a mentorship program Prior experience as a student leader Prior experience in an office setting Duties: Facilitate monthly Head Mentor check-ins to support mentors in their role on behalf of the Claremont colleges Plan, implement and evaluate OBSA Mentorship activities using feedback from Head Mentors and as directed by the OBSA Dean Plan one programwide social event and one learning-based workshop each semester to support the mentorship groups. Communicate deadlines with Head Mentors about Mentorship event dates Coordinate marketing and publicizing Mentorship events with the OBSA GRADUATE STUDENT MANAGER FOR SOCIAL MEDIA, MARKETING AND ARTS ENGAGEMENT. Develop monthly OBSA Mentorship electronic newsletter for distribution to all participants, underlining relevant activities, events and opportunities that adhere to the goals of the Mentorship program. Use in-office time to develop proposals, ask questions, and make progress in planning. Promote, attend and provide staff support at all OBSA Mentorship activities Create online participant evaluations for all OBSA Mentorship events Weekly supervisor 1 on 1 during office hours to discuss strengths and challenges faced by program participants/mentors, and develop strategies to address them Assist mentors and Head Mentors with monthly progress, keeping both Head Mentors and Mentors accountable and aware of responsibilities as needed Use available resources to create a system for keeping records/managing information for each mentorship group as directed Staff recruitment/mass meeting events each winter for prospective mentors Assist in creating application questionnaires and other recruitment and selection materials Assist in interviews and selection for Mentors. ***************************************** 3) OBSA STUDENT MANAGER FOR DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND LEADERSHIP Description: Passionate about social justice? Interested in engaging your peers on discussions

4 related to identity, race and ethnicity? Committed to creating an inclusive campus through work in OBSA? This position is for a rising junior or senior who would like to develop facilitation skills, create identity-based learning opportunities for their peers, and assist OBSA in nurturing safe spaces for discussions related to ethnic affiliation, intersectionality, student activism, service and holistic support for students of African descent. The student in this role will connect students to helpful resources, identify groups or individuals to deliver engaging and challenging workshops and activities around diversity, and support students in identity-based self-discovery. To that end, there will be specific projects assigned and the student in this role will work closely alongside the OBSA Assistant Dean and Graduate Student Manager. An excellent learning, leadership and community-building opportunity. This position runs fall-winter, with opportunities for work in spring and summer. ANNUAL CELEBRATION and OBSA GRADUATE STUDENT PROGRAM MANAGER FOR DIVERSITY, INCLUSION AND LEADERSHIP Develop, implement and staff an OBSA stress management workshop and study break (to occur during midterms) Develop and determine discussion topics for an inaugural OBSA Family Dinner event for frank, intracultural dialogue and community building between students of African descent on campus (annual) Plan annual leadership retreat to orient, support and promote goal-setting and accountability in leadership transition among executive boards for Black student-led groups (launch fall 2016) Begin to develop an annual OBSA alumni welcome event to engage and include recent alumni in the work of OBSA. Collaborative outreach and engagement project with the OBSA STUDENT GRADUATE STUDENT MANAGER FOR SOCIAL MEDIA,

5 MARKETING AND ARTS ENGAGEMENT Assist in conceptualizing and implementing activities for the annual freshman overnight retreat/mentorship program launch event in collaboration with OBSA STUDENT MANAGER FOR MENTORSHIP This position reports to the OBSA Graduate Program Manager for Diversity, Inclusion and Leadership, and attends the OBSA Advisory Board meetings with the OBSA Dean.
