1 POSITION DESCRIPTION Class Title: Turf and Ornamental Specialist Grade Number: 56 Department: Parks Date: 11/13/08 GENERAL PURPOSE Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the coordination, preparation, repair, and maintenance of athletic fields and park grounds; installation, maintenance, and repair of sprinkler irrigation systems, maintenance of buildings; and the construction of special landscaping or public use areas. Serves as team leader on athletic field maintenance. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the direct supervision of the Crew Chief, and the general supervision of the Parks Superintendent. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Provides technical and functional supervision or leads direction and training for less skilled workers, temporary workers or volunteers to accomplish essential duties and responsibilities. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Plan, organize and direct the establishment of and maintenance of turfgrass areas and associated plant materials and irrigation systems at Abe Raizen sports park. Schedule maintenance activities to accommodate customer activities and events. Perform the full range of athletic fields and park grounds maintenance duties, water, mow, weed eat, trim, aerate, renovate and fertilize athletic fields turf and lawns. Perform a variety of duties in the maintenance of irrigation systems; change and adjust heads, maintain controllers; irrigation system installation and maintenance projects. Operate the full range of grounds maintenance vehicles and equipment including dump trucks, mowers, edgers, blowers, tractors, loaders, and hand and power tools; maintain tools and equipment and perform preventative maintenance on equipment. Maintain play equipment, picnic tables, and other related parks equipment and facilities; install and repair playground equipment, fences, and other related parks equipment and facilities. Perform the full range of trees and shrubs maintenance; plant, water, fertilize, and maintain landscaped areas including bushes, trees and shrubs; control weeds.

2 Remove weeds, blows, rakes, and removes trash and debris from walkways, culverts, stairways, roadways, planters, and parking. Mows, grooms, and replants lawn areas. Clean and maintain sports park concessionaire building restrooms; stock restrooms with necessary supplies; repair toilets, urinals and facets. Install new landscaping by cultivating and renovating areas and installing or replacing turf, trees, shrubs, plants, and ground cover. Stakes, prunes, thins, and transplants turf, trees, shrubs, plants and ground cover. Performs semi-skilled interior building maintenance. Repairs, modifies, paints, and replaces fixtures, plumbing, electrical and structural components. Prepares, repairs, or installs, fencing, paving materials for pathways, retaining walls, borders, posts, slabs, drains and culverts. Inspection of athletic fields and park grounds, play facilities, building facilities, and other equipment, independently scheduling or completing repairs; planning and organizing work activities; performing irrigation repairs; and plan and organize sprinkler watering schedules. Install, repair and replace landscape irrigation systems following and interpreting blueprints, sketches or verbal instructions. Maintains irrigation systems and/or makes necessary changes to locate and maintain shutoff valves, irrigation valves, electronic timers, and physical layouts. Monitor and diagnose weed, disease, and pest problems in athletic fields and park grounds, taking appropriate measures to mitigate or eliminate the problems. Apply biological/organic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides to athletic fields and park grounds, as authorized. Place postings where pesticides are being applied. Dispose of product containers per instructions and applicable environmental regulations. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safe pesticide/herbicide applications and regulations. Maintain current Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for potentially hazardous materials. Maintains logs and files pesticide use reports. Oversee the work of, and train, other lesser skilled workers on an intermittent basis. Serves as an informal leader to athletic field and park grounds maintenance projects. Deal courteously and tactfully with the public in response to inquiries and complaints; provide information regarding rules and regulations of the athletic fields and associated park grounds facilities. Identify maintenance needs and safety hazards; report needs to appropriate staff. Assist in set-up and removal of equipment needed for special events. Assists in the construction of new parks facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work.

3 Perform other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: (A) Graduate from high school or GED equivalent, and (B) Four years experience in the maintenance, construction, and repair of parks or related facilities. (C) Any equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (A) The position requires thorough knowledge of turf management and maintenance practices and techniques including those for athletic fields. Requires knowledge of horticulture and methods of planting and caring for plants, trees, shrubs and lawns. Requires knowledge of watering requirements for turf, trees, shrubs and lawns, and various types of soil. Requires knowledge of sprinkler and irrigation system design, installation, operation and maintenance. Requires knowledge of the operating and mechanical characteristics of a full range of grounds maintenance equipment sufficient to skillfully operate and perform routine maintenance. Requires knowledge of reading landscape blueprints and specifications. Requires knowledge of and skill at proper and safe application of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. Requires knowledge of safe lifting techniques; techniques for safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials. Requires sufficient math skill to calculate distances, proportions, and sums. Requires sufficient human relations skills to work cooperatively as part of a team to serve internal and external customers. (B) Requires the ability to carry out the functions of the position. Requires the ability to perform park maintenance, landscaping, reconstruction and repair work independently with minimal instruction and supervision. Requires ability to work with, and occasionally supervise, lesser skilled workers assigned to assist with tasks. Must be able to maintain lawns, athletic fields, special landscaping, and public use areas. Must be able to accurately identify turf and other plant diseases and pests and take steps to mitigate or eradicate. Must be able to design, install, operate, maintain, and repair sprinkler and irrigations systems. Requires ability to read, interpret, and apply a wide variety of technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints, and schematics. Must be able to operate large vehicle, excavating and other mechanical equipment safely. Requires the ability to use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner. Requires the ability to maintain accurate records. Requires the ability to perform minor repair and servicing of pumps and motors used in irrigation systems and motorized equipment. Requires the ability to skillfully and safely operate grounds maintenance power equipment and hand tools. Requires the ability to lead projects and oversee the work of others. Requires the ability to work cooperatively with the public. Requires the ability to work as a contributing member of a team, work productively and cooperatively with internal and external customers, and convey a positive image of the City. Requires the ability to work varying schedules in support of projects and events. Preferable/Desirable Qualification(s):

4 Irrigation and athletic field maintenance experience is preferred. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (A) Valid Oklahoma State Driver s license; (B) Commercial Driver s license endorsement or ability to or ability to obtain one within six months of employment; (C) A Herbicide applicators license or the ability to obtain one within one year of employment TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED Pickup truck; lawn and landscaping equipment, including tractors, trailers, mowers, trencher, backhoe, aerator, chain saw, edgers, weed trimmers, electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, irrigation systems; miscellaneous hand and power tools for turf maintenance, carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, cement finishing work, transit and level; etc. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
