For you as a trainee/graduate lawyer, what you work on is really important because it drives your learning and delivers your job satisfaction. So what kind of work do we do? The matters we tackle include cross-border, ground-breaking global transactions and cases. There s more detail on our website, but it comes down to large, complex, global deals and disputes that demand a sophisticated blend of business understanding and legal knowledge. So how do we do it? The firm is built around six global practice areas: Finance; Capital Markets; Corporate; Litigation & Dispute Resolution; Real Estate; Tax, Pensions & Employment. It s likely that most of your training time will be spent in the first four areas, because they re the largest practice areas for our firm in Asia Pacific. This means you ll need a genuine interest in financial and commercial law. 7 LEARNING AT CLIFFORD CHANCE LEARNING AT CLIFFORD CHANCE TRAINING TO BE A LAWYER The two-year training/graduate programme turns gifted beginners into professionals, with the aim of getting the breadth of experience you need to emerge as a confident business adviser. As far as possible, training is arranged to reflect your interests and priorities. Our training/graduate programme is divided into four, six-month seats (rotations) that place you in different parts of our business. You will work in teams with different colleagues and clients, gaining exposure to the challenges they face and the ways in which we help them. While seat availability is subject to the needs of the business, we endeavour to allocate you seats which reflect your personal career ambitions. Our extensive international network and the global nature of our business mean that it is both possible and beneficial for you to take one of your seats in one of our overseas offices. Secondments are an opportunity for you to acquire new skills and experience, possibly to utilise and improve your language skills and give you a valuable international perspective on new business and a different cultural environment. Throughout the training contract/graduate programme, you will be closely supported, both informally and through formal mentoring, with advice and guidance from the graduate team and a supervisor in each seat. In general, learning at Clifford Chance follows the 70:20:10 rule, which is to say that 70% of your learning happens through practical experience, with 20% via mentoring and 10% by formal study. The seat process is akin to an apprenticeship. You will work closely alongside your supervisor and he or she sees what you do, gives you advice, checks your work and then gradually gives you more complex things to do as your skills and confidence grow. It s a great way to learn because you have a safety net and a feedback loop right there

8 LEARNING AT CLIFFORD CHANCE LEARNING AT CLIFFORD CHANCE TAKE A SEAT Given that seats are such an important part of your programme with Clifford Chance, how do you choose which practice areas you want to work in? Our graduate teams work with you from your acceptance of our offer, through the training/graduate programme and qualification process, and into your first role as an associate. At every stage of your training, there ll be support and advice. We ll ask you where you d like to go next and, wherever possible, we ll give you your first choice, while providing a genuinely balanced and representative mix of experience. Clifford Chance provides immense support for its trainees/graduates, directly and indirectly. The moment you accept our offer, we ll put you in touch with a current trainee/ graduate who acts as your buddy all the way to the beginning of the programme. We stay in touch with you and there s a good stream of social and professional events that make you feel part of the team, even as a future trainee/graduate. Once your training begins, you ll have a dedicated supervisor in each seat (usually an associate) and there are also career development partners who manage the quality of the training experience for our trainees, graduates as well as associates. Nothing is left to chance. We provide close training and mentoring for supervisors, so that they know in turn how to provide the right kind of support for trainees/graduates. We make a huge investment in our trainees/graduates and there ll be many people who ll help you to make the most of your experience. In a sense, though, the support you get as a trainee/graduate is merely an extension of a fundamentally collaborative culture. As you move from seat to seat, building your legal and business skills, you ll also be learning to trust and rely on those around you

As a trainee/graduate, we will make sure that your energy and time are focused on activities that will best develop your legal and business skills. You could be drafting and proofing documents, conducting due diligence on a client s acquisition target, attending client meetings, preparing documents for a court hearing, researching titles and leases on a real estate portfolio or creating a data room ahead of a major transaction. Most of your time will be spent working in teams where you will make an important contribution to their success - you may even run some smaller transactions for clients. As you might expect, life as a trainee/graduate can sometimes be challenging, particularly in the countdown to finalising a transaction or heading into a resolution hearing. You will be expected to deliver high-quality service consistently - often across different time zones, requiring commitment, energy and enthusiasm. As your experience grows you will begin to take on more responsibility for specific tasks, but you will always have expert colleagues on hand to explain what you are doing and take an active interest in your development.
