1 Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Management RATIONALE FOR THE COURSE The current skills shortage in the water and wastewater treatment industry requires that employees be equipped with the skills and knowledge of key aspects necessary for the improvement of the South African water sector, and that they are able to contribute positively to the performance of their institutions. Ability to develop and implement operation management plan COURSE DESCRIPTION The course is designed to equip water and wastewater treatment personnel with practical and relevant operational/managerial competence in handling facilities at their disposal. Emphasis will be on the development of management and operational skills needed in the water and wastewater industry. Participants will learn strategic and problem-solving skills that lead to solutions aligned with organizational goals. They will become more confident employees and managers with the basic tools to manage a facility and their subordinates. Participants will be encouraged to use examples from their current work environments and life experiences to find solutions through both discussions and group work. The course will also provide tools and techniques that will help participants work step-by-step through workplace problems and scenarios. The course will cover specific topics that will enhance the skills of the participants in management and equip them with advanced knowledge in water and wastewater infrastructure management. Aspects to be covered include basic management principles, communications and problem solving skills, mechanisms for resolving conflict, coaching, performance assessment tools, task allocation, supervision, monitoring, reporting, discipline, budgeting and control Who should attend this course? Any person who has completed the water and wastewater qualification at NQF level 4 or above, e.g. Plant managers, Superintendents, Foreman, technicians etc. Any person with a Civil or Chemical Engineering background working in the water and wastewater industry

3 COURSE OUTLINE Module 1: General management principles This module will cover key terms, rules, concepts, principles and practices of generic management that will enable participants to be informed managers of water and wastewater facilities. The module is designed to equip managers and prospective managers with management, workplace relations and leadership techniques within a work environment to drive and influence performance, application of management principles and practices to improve overall work effectiveness and efficiency, leadership behavior to improve workplace performance, knowledge and skills in personnel workplace and enterprise management. Module 2: Water and wastewater infrastructure management: 2.1 Water Infrastructure This section will cover the description of water infrastructure, understanding of tasks requirements, management practices related to each infrastructure, organization (tasks allocation, human resources, equipment handling and allocation), monitoring, reporting/evaluation 2.2 Wastewater Infrastructure This section will cover the description of wastewater infrastructure, understanding of tasks requirements, management practices related to each infrastructure, organization (tasks allocation, human resources, equipment handling and allocation), monitoring, reporting/evaluation Module 3: Water Infrastructure Operations: This section will provide information on water infrastructure management, the analytical methods, tools, data, technologies, and political and financial framework and constraints for managing water infrastructure systems and facilities as assets. The section will cover the basic principles

The section will cover the basic principles of water infrastructure operation management; developing an operation management plan, implementation process. Module 4: Wastewater Infrastructure Operations: This section will provide information on wastewater infrastructure management, the analytical methods, tools, data, technologies, and political and financial framework and constraints for managing infrastructure systems and facilities as assets. The section will also cover the basic principles of wastewater infrastructure operation management; developing an operation management plan and implementation process. Module 5: Management of Water and Wastewater Infrastructure: This section will cover the scope of management and management practices related to water and wastewater. It will enable management competencies to be strengthened, and enable managers and potential managers to better manage systems, processes, resources in the workplace. Participants will be equipped with knowledge, skills, attitudes and values required to operate confidently as individuals and as members of a team in the work environment and will be able to carry out task allocation, supervision, monitoring and reporting duties related to water and wastewater infrastructure management.

5 Module 6: Water and Wastewater Operations Management Plan: Water and wastewater Management Plans are an integral component of water quality management plans. This module will cover aspects of water and wastewater management planning, the primary purpose of the Water and wastewater Quality Management Planning programs and standards aimed at restoring, enhancing and maintaining the chemical, physical and biological integrity of water to protect public health and ecological values, and to enhance the domestic, municipal, recreational, industrial and other uses of water. It include water and wastewater safety plan, monitoring program, process control and maintenance. END OF THE SEMINAR
