1 Vlunteer Officer, Bats in Churches Prject Supprted by the Heritage Lttery Fund 9 mnths fixed term pst Jb descriptin Bats in Churches Prject This rle is an exciting pprtunity t be part f a prject driving frwards a nvel partnership apprach t prvide help and supprt t places f wrship where bats are having an impact n histric fabric and the use f the building. A partnership f five rganisatins (Natural England, Church f England s Church Buildings Cuncil, Bat Cnservatin Trust, Histric England, Churches Cnservatin Trust) led by Natural England, has been successful in its Bats in Churches prject Rund 1 applicatin t the Heritage Lttery Fund (HLF) Heritage Grants funding stream. The prject is nw recruiting a Vlunteer Officer t help further develp the prject s that a successful Rund 2 HLF applicatin can be submitted in March The bats in churches prject aims are t: Develp and deliver innvative techniques and systems t better manage the impacts f bats (in churches and mre widely) and make this infrmatin available t all. Ensure church cmmunities are better resurced and mre empwered t manage their particular situatins. Ensure bat clnies that depend n churches are better managed and less threatened. Reduce the physical and scial impacts caused by bats at the mst severely affected churches (e.g. damage frm drppings and urine). Develp the skills f vlunteers and prfessinals enabling them t mre effectively assist church cmmunities and safely manage bat ppulatins fund in churches. Imprve ur knwledge and understanding abut hw bats use histric buildings. Engage wider cmmunities s that new grups f peple will engage with and learn abut bats, church buildings and their cmmunities 1

2 The Vlunteer Officer will frm part f a small, dispersed team, including a Prject Manager, Finance Officer and Cmmunicatins Officer based at Natural England, an Engagement Officer, based at the Church f England and a Survey Develpment Officer based at BCT. In the develpment stage f the prject, the Vlunteer Officer will wrk with vlunteers and church cmmunities t develp the vlunteer engagement and training plans fr the Bats in Churches Prject. This pst will require excellent cnsultatin, cmmunicatin and rganisatin skills, diplmacy when wrking with a wide range f stakehlders, experience f training curse design and vlunteer engagement and an understanding f bat cnservatin techniques. Backgrund t BCT The Bat Cnservatin Trust (BCT) is prud t be the leading nn-gvernmental rganisatin devted slely t the cnservatin f bats and their habitats. BCT s visin is a wrld rich in wildlife where bats and peple thrive tgether. Our missin is t cnserve bats fr present and future generatins. Thrugh educatin, cllabrative actin and scientific research, we inspire individuals and rganisatins t value and speak ut fr bats. BCT s strategic aims are: Discver: T ensure scientific evidence is in place t supprt bat cnservatin Act: T secure and enhance bat ppulatins and their resilience in a changing wrld Inspire: T win the levels f supprt required t secure and enhance bat ppulatins Strengthen: BCT t achieve financial stability and sustainable staff wrklads. Staff and vlunteers are mtivated and well led. BCT s cre expertise includes: bidiversity delivery (an experienced lead partner fr several bat species in the UK Bidiversity Strategy); the Natinal Bat Mnitring Prgramme (crdinating mre than 2000 vlunteer surveyrs each year); delivering advice abut bats (thrugh the Natinal Bat Helpline and thrugh lng-term partnerships with the statutry nature cnservatin rganisatins); training prfessinals and vlunteers; and engaging and educating wider audiences. BCT s head ffice is in Vauxhall, Lndn and we have ffices in Wales and Sctland as well as sme remtely based staff. 2

3 Purpse f the jb T develp the vlunteer engagement and training plans fr the Bats in Churches Prject Rles and Respnsibilities 1. Wrk clsely with the Engagement Officer, Activity Plan Cnsultant and Survey Develpment Officer t ensure a jined up apprach t engagement and learning in the prject. 2. Cnsult with stakehlders t analyse engagement and training needs/pprtunities: Hst a wrkshp with specialist bats in churches experts n vlunteer training needs and their interest in engaging with the prject. Carry ut cnsultatin with existing bat and church vlunteer netwrks, and with cmmunities lcal t the prject churches, n their interest in learning mre and their skills, training needs and availability t engage with the prject. Explre innvative ways t attract wider vlunteer interest and engagement 3. Training needs analysis Map skills, skills gaps and analyse training needs. Review existing training materials and curses. Review existing mdels fr Friends f churches grups 4. Design, develp and pilt training curses and materials Identify learning gals and training curses Design health and safety risk assessments. Identify which vlunteer activities require licences, insurance and ther key pints Pilt training 5. Design and pilt engagement and recruitment materials and events 6. Write the vlunteer engagement sectins f the Rund 2 Prject activity plan Wrking relatinships Jintly reprts t the Prject Manager (based at Natural England) and t the BCT Bats in Churches Prject Crdinatr (based at BCT). Clse cntact with Bats in Churches Prject staff and Steering Grup, including Engagement Officer, Activity Plan cnsultant, Survey Develpment Officer, Cmmunicatins Officer and with prject stakehlders and vlunteers 3

4 Regular cntact with staff within BCT including Head f Cnservatin Services; Training and Cnferences Manager; Directr f Cmmunicatins and Fundraising; Helpline Managers; Head f Bidiversity. Other relevant factrs Cmpliance with BCT s Staff Handbk plicies, including Green Husekeeping and Health and Safety. Salary The salary is in the range f 24,000-28,300 depending n experience Length f pst This is a fixed term cntract fr 9 mnths. There is an initial three mnth prbatinary perid with ne week s ntice, then tw mnths ntice. Hliday 25 days annual leave plus bank hlidays (33 days in ttal) (pr rata) Benefits Package BCT ffers Childcare Vuchers, Cyclescheme and an Emplyee Assistance Prgramme which yu may jin after satisfactry cmpletin f a prbatin perid. Pensin BCT will autmatically enrl yu int a Grup Pensin Plan after yu have been emplyed by BCT fr three mnths. Currently, emplyee and emplyer cntributins are 3% (minimum) and 3% respectively. Pensin cntributins will be reviewed and increased in line with pensin refrm legislatin. Usual time f wrk This is a full time pst, 9am 5.30pm including ne hur fr lunch (37.5 hurs per week). There may be ccasinal evening and weekend wrk fr which time ff in lieu is given, althugh nt necessarily n a ne fr ne basis. Place f wrk The main BCT ffice in Vauxhall, Suth Lndn. There may be pprtunities fr wrking frm hme n an agreed part-time basis. Regular travel away frm the BCT Lndn ffice may be required. 4
