Learning Objectives How did the GSCP Equivalence Process work for BSCI? How is BSCI related to the ITC Standards map? How can BSCI Participants use the Quick Assessment from other systems (Annex 8)?

How did the GSCP Equivalence Process work for BSCI?

GSCP Equivalence Process (Code 2009) Self-assessment to identify possible gaps Equivalence application Preliminary review Panel review Share and compare 6

Lessons taken into account for the Code 2014 More coherence needed between the content of the code and the scope of the audit: Bonded Labour Disciplinary procedures Labour only contracting, sub-contracting, home workers, apprenticeship More transparency in the interpretation guidelines 7

How is BSCI related to the ITC Standards map?

459 eco / social labels In 197 countries In 25 industry sectors 9

Standards map 10

Using ITC Standard map PROS You find information on different standards You can quickly compare them with BSCI content and take an informed decision CONS Some standards don t keep their information updated The comparison only covers the content of the standard 11

BSCI self-assessment in the ITC Platform 12

How can BSCI Participants use the Quick Assessment (Annex 8)?

Annex 8: Quick Assessment It can be used by BSCI participants and their business partners to: Pre-assess the level of risk associated to producers with social certificates / code of conduct Decide whether or not to audit these producers 14

Pre-conditions The social scheme covers BSCI non-negotiable requirements (fully or partially) The follow up and implementation plan is serious and credible 15

Non-negotiable requirements About the code / Standard Audit process and Auditing Bodies: Governance ILO Core Conventions Limit of working hours as per BSCI Code Remuneration at least minimum wage Occupational Health and Safety Audit duration Audit validity Triangulation technique Clear follow up Competence Structured revision process Transparency 16

All non-negotiable are answered YES The producer is not monitored against the BSCI Code of Conduct. FULL COVERAGE The producer signs the BSCI Code and Terms of Implementation for Business Partners Participant closely follows up on producer s continuous and sustainable improvement The decision not to monitor may be revised at any time 17

Almost all Non-negotiable are answered YES PARTIAL COVERAGE Recognitions of the system up to the end of the audit validity but no longer than 12 months. Except questions about: 48 regular working hours Competence of the auditors Close follow up. The decision must not go beyond 12 months. 18

Not all non-negotiable are answered YES No acknowledgment of producers' claim. NO COVERAGE The producer signs the BSCI Code and Terms of Implementation for Business Partners to be monitored The producer will eventually receive a BSCI Audit. 19

Keep in mind! Responsibility: BSCI Participants have the responsibility to closely follow up on the continuous improvement of these producers Transparency: BSCI Participants inform the producer on its decision and communicate that such can be reviewed at any time Preference: BSCI audits prevail. Therefore, if another BSCI Participant sourcing from the same producer decides to include that producer in the BSCI monitoring process, this decision must be privileged. 20
