It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all. UN-HABITAT plays an important role in providing technical assistance to countries and cities in the areas of governance, land and property rights, environmental management, disaster mitigation, post-conflict rehabilitation, urban safety, water management and poverty reduction.
