1 Children s Librarian Under the supervision of the Library Director, performs a professional level of library work as the Children s Librarian. Characteristic Work: Supervises Children s Room staff. Plans and implements programs and activities such as story times, community outreach, and the summer reading program. Recommends and purchases books and other materials for children. Carries out collection management responsibilities: withdraws outdated materials; replaces worn materials still in demand; and purchases needed new materials. Provides reference service, computer-related assistance, and readers advisory services to patrons in the Children s Room. Takes responsibility for the appearance of the children's room including the condition of the shelves, displays and general atmosphere of the room. Provides library tours and orientations. Communicates effectively with staff and public. Performs other related work as assigned. Essential Knowledge and abilities: Understanding of basic library principles, procedures, technology, goals and philosophy of service. Extensive knowledge of children s literature. Ability to meet, communicate with, and interact with patrons, especially children and parents, effectively. Ability to relate tactfully and courteously with the public and to maintain effective working relationships with other employees. Ability to plan, coordinate and direct work. Ability to create a pleasant, helpful atmosphere. Ability to reach out to the schools and other youth based groups in the community. Ability to find and implement alternative sources of funding such as grants. Knowledge of current events, popular, local and youth culture. Comfortable with computers and tablets. Proficient knowledge of computers and Microsoft Office. (Publisher, Word, Excel, and Powerpoint) and familiar with the use of a library catalog from the staff and patron perspective. Consistently presents the Watertown Public Library and its resources to the public in a positive manner.

2 Essential Training and experience: A Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited library school. At least one year of experience working in a public library. A comparable amount of directly related library experience, along with a Bachelor s degree, may be substituted at the Library Director s discretion, for the minimum educational requirements. Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to perform library functions via keyboard, mouse and telephone. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit, stoop or crouch. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
