Applying Leadership Principles in the Lodge Leadership is about getting the right things done with the organization s full support and involvement Leadership is required of every mason, from carrying out the duties of Steward to those of the WM It s NOT about passing through the chair and becoming an entitled Past Master 11

Applying Leadership Principles in the Lodge Leadership is about: Promoting Membership Growth and Retention in the Lodge: Assisting with the development of the Plan Assisting with executing the Plan for the lodge Promoting the engagement of families Assisting with charitable outreach, including fundraising Assisting with benevolence and visitation Carrying out the duties of any administration position to which one is elected or appointed 12

Applying Leadership Principles in the Lodge Leadership is about: Doing good ritual work and attending all rehearsals, even when not specifically assigned work Attending the Lodge of Instruction Becoming an active member of the Holy Royal Arch Developing one s self to be skilled and prepared for greater leadership responsibilities 13

What Does it Mean for the WM to be the Ruler of His Lodge? Let s Discuss 14

What Does it Mean for the WM to be the Ruler of His Lodge? Although the WM makes the final decision, he is not alone on the journey and should take counsel from his brethren His respect and consideration of the views and input of others is important to the happiness of his brethren He has the opportunity to learn and practice the idea that while he can get brethren to act to some extent because he has the RIGHT to demand it of them, he gets a higher and more sustained level of commitment and performance when they act because of who he is and what he represents RESPECT During his year as WM, a brother has the unique opportunity to learn from the wisdom and experience of his Past Masters and from the fresh perspectives of the younger masons in his lodge 15

What Does it Mean for the WM to be the Ruler of His Lodge? Although he is the ruler, and can choose to use his time perfecting his autocratic skills, he might be better off demonstrating to the brethren who he is as a man, husband, father, intellect, professional and shepherd so his brethren can RESPECT and follow him for who he is and what he stands for However, when called for the WM has the duty to make decisions, which is important for: Smooth running of the lodge Maintenance of good order Inspiring confidence and certainty of purpose among the brethren Demonstrating the acceptance of and comfort with the responsibility of Leadership 16

What Does it Mean for the WM to be the Ruler of His Lodge? And most importantly, the WM as Ruler (or Leader) of his lodge has the opportunity of demonstrating that the greatest Rulers lead from the front, with: High Quality Ritual Work Understanding and Effective Execution of Organizational Imperatives (of Grand Lodge, the District and his Lodge) Focus on Strategic Priorities, such as the Membership Growth and Retention Plan (and others established for his year in office) Effective Management of Committee Meetings Leadership of Fund Raising, Charity and Benevolence Initiatives Consistent Practice of Compassion and Benevolence Constant Demonstration of the Highest Ethical and Moral Standards 17
