We are responsible for the safe and efficient transit of ocean and great lakes vessels through the Montreal to Lake Ontario section for the St. Lawrence Seaway System, which includes maintenance of a variety of aids to navigation in the St. Lawrence River. A brief summary of the Federal benefits for permanent employees can be found at Summary Of The Essential Job Functions of This Position This position requires journey level work experience in painting and carpentry. The work consists of the maintenance and repair of Corporation facilities, including buildings, lock and marine equipment, navigational aid structures, and motor vehicles. This requires the application of building maintenance practices associated with a variety of trades such as painting, carpentry, concrete finishing, roofing, plastering, etc., with journey level experience required for painting and carpentry work. At the journey level, the employee independently determines the methods, techniques, devices, and materials that are best suited for each assignment. Journey level industrial painting duties require knowledge and skill in preparing surfaces (by smoothing, filling, shaping and leveling with metal and synthetic resins), mixing and preparing coating materials (i.e. paint, epoxy resin, Teflon, liquid anode, inorganic zinc, vinyl), and applying those coating materials (on wood, metal, synthetic, concrete) to ensure that work meets match, texture, decorative, thickness, and level requirements. Journey level carpentry duties require the knowledge of construction and repair techniques in order to maintain and repair buildings, structures, and other items using wood, wood substitutes, and composite building materials. A journey level carpenter is expected to independently interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications, and determine the layout and work sequences and types of lumber or special related materials. Accuracy, spacing, fit, and structural soundness and finished appearance are essential. The work requires following established safety rules and regulations, and using proper safety equipment, to maintain a safe and clean work environment. Skill in operating hand and power tools, and skill in setting up and operating the full range of shop equipment and machines of each trade is necessary. Physical Effort This position requires a considerable amount of standing, stooping, bending, climbing, and working in tiring or uncomfortable positions. Work may be performed from ladders, staging, manbaskets, or from a raft on the water. Occasionally work may be performed over the water. Lifting up to 100 pounds may also be

3 Maintenance Mechanic WG required. Incumbent is required to use vigilance to avoid injury and is required to wear a hard hat and protective goggles under certain circumstances. Some work areas require the use of a full face respirator, which makes breathing difficult. Working Conditions Incumbent works inside and outside. When inside, is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperature, and noise, which is difficult to talk above. When outside, work is occasionally performed during bad weather (rain or snow and in muddy and icy areas). Both inside and outside, is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and from hard, damp floors or ground. Sites may have disagreeable odors and may be dirty, dusty, and greasy. Is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, and sprains while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment. Is often exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acid, fluids, and lubricants. The use of a respirator is required for some work assignments or if the employee may be exposed to hazardous materials/atmospheres. As part of the pre-employment physical, the selected candidate will be required to fill out a Respirator User Medical Questionnaire and will be administered a pulmonary function test. Selectee will also be fit tested for a respirator facemask on the first day of duty. The fit testing and mask fitting require the selectee to report to work clean-shaven on the first day of duty. As a condition of employment, the selected candidate must agree to report to work clean-shaven on the first day of duty, and agree to be clean-shaven whenever their work assignment requires the use of a respirator. What Are The Minimum Qualifications For This Position? In order to qualify for this position, your overall experience and training must indicate possession of journey level skills, knowledge, and abilities needed to perform the basic work of the position without more than normal supervision. This will be evidenced by a rating of satisfactory on the screen out elements (see page 3) and an average rating of satisfactory on the remaining job rating elements as listed. If you are not rated satisfactory on the screen out elements, you will be considered ineligible for the position, and will not be rated on the remaining job elements. How Do You Rate Highly Qualified? You must show that you have 3 years of extensive journey level work experience in the painting and carpentry fields in an industrial environment. You may have a combination of work in the two fields that equals 3 years (i.e. 2 years painting and 1 year carpentry or 3 years combined work). You may also use a combination of work and education/training (i.e. 2 years of training and 1 year of work), but you must have had at least one year of journey level work experience after completing the training, in both fields. What Are The Desired Knowledge, Skills And Abilities For This Job? Your experience must show you have acquired journey level skills and knowledge (but does not require a journey level certificate). You will be evaluated on your ability to perform the job functions outlined on page 2 as indicated in the following job rating elements. To be qualified for this position, you must meet the two identified screen out elements. (*Screen out means that journey level experience in this job element is necessary to be eligible for the position.) 1. Knowledge of materials used in the industrial painter trade sufficient to determine and to apply the appropriate surface preparation (i.e. blast grit); coating methods and techniques (such as epoxy resins, lacquer, liquid anode, inorganic zinc, and vinyl); patching compounds; and the use of a variety of hardwood, softwood, plywood, wood substitutes, materials and fixtures for miscellaneous maintenance projects. *Screen out element

4 Maintenance Mechanic WG Knowledge of a variety of carpentry trade practices sufficient to determine the proper grade, size, and type of lumber or wood substitute material required; operate general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment; and produce finished products with precise fits, accurate dimensions, and acceptable appearance. *Screen out element 3. Ability to plan, compute, and layout complex and exact projects by reading, interpreting and applying drawings, specifications, blueprints, schematics, instructions and building codes. 4. Knowledge of advance shop math and skill in using measuring instruments. 5. Ability to safely use and maintain tools and equipment. If you meet the screen out elements for this position, you will be further evaluated on the quality and extent of your experience, education, and training relevant to the duties of the position. Your rating will measure the degree to which your background matches the demands of this position. Evaluation will be based on the relevance, scope, and quality of all your experience and training, regardless of where and how acquired (i.e. you may have acquired experience through volunteer work or military service).
