2 The Organization Planned Parenthood Mar Monte (PPMM) provides a broad range of health care for over 250,000 primarily low-income women, men, and children annually across 42 counties and at 35 health centers in mid- California and northern Nevada. Following a series of mergers of Planned Parenthood affiliates and independent health centers during the 1990s, PPMM is now the largest Planned Parenthood affiliate in the United States. While most patients come to PPMM for family planning and well-woman care including cancer screenings, many patients also seek prenatal care, pediatric and adult primary care, miscarriage care, abortion, and transgender health care a very broad range of services that is unique to an affiliate of this size and tenure. Comprehensive sexual health education is an important component of PPMM s work in public schools and prisons, as well as among foster youth and migrant field workers. PPMM s educators also run support groups and provide case management for pregnant and parenting teens, to help them avoid unwanted pregnancy, and to set and achieve their educational goals. Planned Parenthood Mar Monte s advocacy team works at the local and state level in partnership with other state affiliates and allies in California and Nevada, and at the federal level in partnership with Planned Parenthood Federation of America to promote policies that ensure that all people have the knowledge, opportunity, and freedom to make every child a healthy child, and every family a healthy family. For over a century, affiliates of the national organization now known as Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) have provided reproductive health care to millions of Americans, and fought domestically and internationally for common-sense policies that promote women s health, allow individuals to prevent unintended pregnancies through access to affordable contraception, and protect the health of young people by providing them with comprehensive sex education. 3 The Opportunity Planned Parenthood Mar Monte (PPMM) is seeking a new President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO). This is a critical and historic moment in the field of healthcare delivery and women s reproductive rights primed for a dynamic leader to shape the direction of one of the most prominent health care and education organizations in the country. The incoming administration and Congress will impose unprecedented barriers to affordable access to family planning and safe abortion, creating high levels of economic, political, and social tension for PPMM clients and staff. The CEO will first and foremost provide strategic leadership and management over PPMM s operations and political advocacy, working in partnership with the Planned Parenthood network and allied organizations on state and national issues and solutions. Reporting to a high profile and distinguished Board of Directors, the CEO will lead the development and implementation of PPMM s strategic and operating plans. This is truly a unique opportunity to build on a legacy of nearly three decades of organizational growth. Working with and through a diverse senior leadership team, the CEO will provide a fresh perspective on high level strategy and vision as a guidepost for resilience in an uncertain political and financial context. Recognizing and embracing that this work requires grit, determination, and personal courage, the CEO will have an unwavering focus on providing exceptional, proactive, and compassionate service that meets the holistic needs of PPMM s clients and the communities it serves. This includes engaging in tough fights and bringing a strong business acumen fortified by a grassroots mentality and grasstops advocacy.

4 Key Priorities Building Knowledge and Relationships The CEO will assume leadership of an established, respected Planned Parenthood affiliate with a strong mission-driven culture, solid yet ever-evolving programs, and experienced operational leaders. The initial priority will be to build relationships with the Board of the Directors and staff by listening, learning, and seeking to understand. Given the current political and social landscape around family planning and reproductive rights, and potential cuts to funding for Planned Parenthood, the CEO must possess an innate ability to inspire and motivate staff, providing broad leadership to an organization with nearly 1,000 employees. Revenue & Operations PPMM s next CEO will be a driving force behind the planning and evaluation of its affiliate services, focused on high-quality delivery of the organization s mission and commitment to the communities it serves. The CEO will provide leadership and management to the financial health of the organization and ensure sufficient revenue generation to continue the operational and programmatic success of its mission. This will entail creative and systems-based thinking about revenue streams, as well as working in partnership with senior leaders on active fundraising through new and existing relationships with individual donors, foundations, and corporations. External Engagement & Advocacy The CEO of PPMM is often called upon to serve as the face of the organization and its mission, and by extension, that of the reproductive health field overall. On a day-to-day basis, this entails proactive, extensive, and positive engagement at the local, state, and federal levels in order to promote and sustain understanding of and support for Planned Parenthood s services, mission, and philosophy. Critical to success will be building trust and collaboration with leaders of other California affiliates via participation in intense development of strategies and planning common business ventures. Related to this is advocacy with other affiliates, PPFA, partner organizations, and external stakeholders. The CEO will lead the organization to promote and influence targeted legislative and regulatory decisions at all levels of government. It will be essential to establish relationships with members of Congress and state legislators, as well as with key public and private funders. As the leader of the largest Planned Parenthood affiliate, the CEO will also be expected to actively participate in various boards and committees across the Planned Parenthood network.

5 The Ideal Candidate PPMM seeks a seasoned CEO who is a highly regarded professional with extensive executive leadership experience and a demonstrated ability to manage the operations and finances of a large and complex organization, coupled with a genuine commitment to and passion for Planned Parenthood s mission. A deep understanding of the current healthcare system and its continuing evolution, with specific expertise in the California and Nevada healthcare systems and reimbursement policies, is highly desirable. The CEO must understand revenue streams related to direct service within the healthcare field and creatively activate different revenue levers in a changing economic, social, and political environment. At the same time, the CEO will have the fundraising prowess to engage institutional and major donors. The next CEO will not only possess deep experience leading organizational strategy understanding how to balance the momentum of current strategy with the need to innovate to meet ever-changing external conditions but will have demonstrated experience managing a large organization while influencing and advocating for the mission externally. Successful candidates will possess unparalleled political savvy and acumen. The ideal candidate must be authentic, with a high degree of comfort with people from all sectors of society from direct service providers and their clients to major donors and politicians and possess the deep self-confidence to maintain utter integrity in the face of confrontation and harassment.

6 Minimum Qualifications Candidates must have a minimum of ten years of experience with a proven track record of success leading a complex organization at an executive level. A background in health care is highly desirable. Outstanding interpersonal and communications skills are essential since this position will be required to move seamlessly across a diverse network of constituencies and staff. A professional background serving as the leader of a high-profile organization, with experience navigating complicated and, at times, contentious environments is highly desirable. The position is based in San Jose, California and requires regular regional and domestic travel.
