1 Insight Research Manager Location London, other UK locations considered Department Supporter and Community Partnerships Reports to (Job Title) Head of Performance, Development & Insight Salary Band Matrix manager (if applicable) N/A Competency level 3 Role definition Role purpose The Insight Research Manager delivers and advises on research work that underpins department projects and activities, providing evidence and insight to enable projects and teams to deliver against objectives. The post holder works alongside others in the Performance, Development & Insight division to ensure research is coordinated, managed and shared effectively, with particular focus on providing qualitative research that sits alongside our data and analysis specialists. The role line manages two Prospect Researchers (matrix managed by the Philanthropy Lead) and a User Researcher (with strong links to our digital work). Key outcomes SPD has research support available at the highest standards, a mix of delivering research projects and supporting/enabling others to conduct their own research The department integrates qualitative research results fully into developing a complete picture of our internal and external operating contexts Accurate and efficient research provides the right information for people to act on and improve their decision making, including behavioural and attitudinal research on our audiences Christian Aid, and SPD in particular, has a stronger and clearer understanding of our audiences; recognising that Christian Aid works with supporters as a whole and across multiple types of interaction (giving, acting and praying), rather than focusing solely on fundraising, advocacy/campaigns or through worship. Longer term trends and the external environment are understood and used within the department to help the effective planning of fundraising and campaigning efforts SPD teams commission, find and use the relevant information they need for good decisionmaking through the Insight toolkit Research information sources are well managed, appropriate to the research needs. Research results provide SPD with a clear and full picture of our operating environment Christian Aid gets value for money with both internally resourced and bought-in research and consultancy services Christian Aid research is represented externally on sector bodies, with other agencies and interest groups. SPD research is represented internally on cross-departmental and crossdivisional projects. In order to respond to ever changing demands within the environment, Christian Aid operates within an agile framework (both in workforce and operational) that requires from all employees, a high level of 1

2 responsiveness and adaptiveness to processes and structures making flexibility and a project based working approach the norm. To sustain this system, managers may/will agree further details of specific tasks and duties as part of the performance agreement. Any reasonable duty may be assigned that is consistent with the nature of the job and its level of responsibility, and employees may be required to change the focus of their role from time to time. Role agility Expected travel per annum Occassional travel On call/unsocial hours No Surge capacity for emergency responses No Role context This role sits within the Performance, Development and Insight (PDI) division, an enabling division which aims to increase the effectiveness of the Supporter and Community Partnerships Department (SPD) in helping Christian Aid to eradicate poverty, by ensuring that the best available evidence is used to inform decisions and that it has been interpreted and presented accurately and effectively. This includes overseeing research processes end to end and a sign-off/ quality assurance process against agreed research standards. Specifically, PDI is responsible for the following. Supporting and coordinating the work of the Senior Management Team, enabling them to meet and work together effectively and efficiently. Delivering actionable insight, research, analysis and business intelligence around our audiences, activities and the wider sector. Managing governance, planning, budgeting and reporting structures, both within SPD and across the wider Christian Aid and Board of Trustees; PDI is home to the department s Project Management Office. Lead on development and improvement to systems and processes, including delivery of a large scale CRM replacement project. The division brings together the interests of the different stakeholders in an objective way, weighing the evidence and setting measurable goals, and where necessary challenging the basis on which decisions are made. We are proactive about ensuring performance systems and processes are fit for purpose, through analysis, influence and training. The Insight Research Manager will identify, manage and coordinate multiple complex research projects with SPD teams, other departments and outside agencies or consultants, as well as being instrumental in delivering training and enabling others to manage their own projects. The role holder will not be expected to deliver all research personally, but will be responsible for specific research projects and then support/advise colleagues to undertake their own research. He/she will contribute to longer term planning in the department. Role requirements Relationships 2

3 External Research agencies, consultants and academics for coordinating existing and commissioning new projects. Engaging with external networks to keep up with the external context such as fundraising, church, societal trends. Service providers such as conference centres. Internal Strong ties with the rest of the PDI team regarding research findings, analysis, benchmarking, evaluations and working together to deliver reports and findings. Strong ties with the business and operations manager in planning, performance measures and reporting, and project coordination. Build good working relationships with the matrix managers for prospect research and digital user research roles. Be able to network across the department/organisation for assessing, managing and distributing research; engaging and sharing best practice with our Research, Evaluation and Learning function. Work with internal business partners where dependencies exist for data, analysis, systems (finance, data teams, supporter relations, strategy). Decision making Budgetary/savings responsibility Is part of planning and budget decision discussions on research investment, as well as supporting/advising the prospect researchers and digital user researcher as needed. Decides on priorities for research projects within their (the Insight Research Manager s) remit. Carries out regular review and recommendations of the best research resources to meet the research needs for the whole department. The Insight Research Manager is accountable to the Head of Performance, Development and Insight on major recommendations and priorities Analytical skills Research planning with a deep understanding of the research need. Excellent skills in qualitative data gathering, analysis and coding. Understanding of how to design and analyse audience research. Understanding of quantitative data and, working with the analysts, how the two come together to create a full picture. Represent the data clearly and accurately to a variety of internal audiences. As these roles are matrix managed through other teams, the expectation of the line manager is to provide coaching and mentorship, as well as professional development opportunities, advising on work as applicable and enabling staff to share learnings to provide a more holistic view of our research findings across SPD. The role holder will manage volunteers as needed. The role holder will support SPD teams in their projects, advising or seeking advice where needed, develop research commissioning and research interpretation skills amongst SPD staff. As part of the PDI team s remit, enable others to carry out their own projects through advice, training, information provision, demonstration and influence. 4 Essential Research Proven track record in managing and carrying out qualitative research, including commissioning, clarifying, routing and tracking requests, data gathering, analysis, providing follow up and evaluations. Strong ability to manage and write surveys and coordinate analysis of survey results. Experience of providing research on the external environment, the general UK context, competitor and comparator monitoring. Strong experience in presenting research findings. Skills in project management and experience in using project management tools. Proven track record in managing research resources effectively. Experience of managing relationships and research with external agencies or consultants and managing internal relationships is particularly important. Ability to influence and negotiate with colleagues at all levels, representing the insight approach in all your dealings with others. Ability to take strong research basics and be able to advise on research outside the specialism of the post holder; in particular those line managed. Technical Advanced skills in research methods, qualitative analysis and clear report writing. Advanced skills in evaluation and review methods. A sound knowledge of fundraising and communications. Excellent planning skills. Communications Report writing in excellent English with great attention to detail, good grammar and punctuation, while keeping hold of the bigger picture. Skills in preparing research and project briefs through careful listening and representation. Experience in presenting research results objectively and confidently to a variety of audiences A good deal of diplomacy is required in coordinating between teams and departments; you will need to be a good listener and a bold questioner and be tenacious in getting results. You will need a confident style to get your points across to staff at all levels by phone, in meetings, through presentations or conferencing systems. Desirable Knowledge of church target market. Use of online survey systems. Knowledge of prospect research, market research and/or user research (UX) disciplines. A project management qualification would be an advantage. Good numerical skills, for working with data from our supporter database, research results and financial analysis (intermediate Excel skills essential). Knowledge of business methods and planning is an advantage. Experience of document classification systems. Experience planning and/or implementing effective supporter journeys.
