Customized Employment According to US/DOL: Customized employment means individualizing the employment relationship between employees and employers in ways that meet the needs of both. It is based on an individualized determination of the strengths, needs, and interests of the person with a disability, and is also designed to meet the specific needs of the employer.

Overview & Funding The project will work together with critical stakeholders to develop policies, remove systemic barriers, implement strategies and best practices, and improve the transition process for Mississippi youth and young adults with DD/ID from school or training to competitive employment in integrated community settings. Funding is provided by the Mississippi Council on Developmental Disabilities.

Systemic Changes Amend the current Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services system so that a provider network is established with sheltered workshops to provide Customized Employment services. Amend the menu of the Home and Community Based Waiver Service to include job discovery as one of the options.

Background for this Project The entire process for this project is based on the proven strategies developed by Marc Gold and Associates a consulting firm based out of Gautier, MS. They consult throughout the county in support of expanding community employment options for people with significant disabilities.

The Process Discovery Capturing discovery through profiles Customized employment planning Portfolio/visual resume development Job development representation Workplace analysis, accommodations, support

The Focus of Discovery Conditions for Success Interests toward an Aspect of the Labor Market Potential Contributions to Employers

Conditions Conditions are characteristics of any job developed for the individual. Conditions refer to issues such as days of work, pay, benefits, location of the job, inside/outside work, time of day, hours per week, etc. While it is possible to have too many conditions, these are extremely important considerations in customizing a job. Target go/no go conditions for priority consideration.

Interests Interests are characteristics of an ideal job that gives direction toward a certain area of work interest. These should be stated in the broadest possible manner, allowable by the applicant. Interests might include: working around boats, office work or working in a retail setting. Do not confuse work preferences with preferentially-stated conditions. Avoid using job titles.

Contributions Contributions refer to the individual s characteristics that will be offered to employers. These might include: Personality characteristics Skills Credentials Experiences Recommendations

Selling Points to Employers Unmet Workplace Needs: This area focuses on tasks that need to get done but are not getting done in the way the employer would like. It also can include tasks that have not been performed but need to be. Tasks better performed by others: This area focuses on aspects of jobs that might better be performed by others at a lower pay grade. This option can directly save money for employers. Specific benefit to enhance business: This area focuses on workplace needs for additional productivity in specific tasks. It must be matched with job seeker s specific competencies.

Business Advisory Councils Agree to become an employment site to recruit and employ at least one job seeker with a disability represented by the sheltered workshop. Agree to serve on an employment connection committee. Service providers would contact committee members when they are targeting a specific business on behalf of a job seeker. Committee members would make calls to open the door for the service provider.

The Future of Services Brand new CMS Regulations: any setting that isolates waiver participants is presumed not eligible for Medicaid waiver funding
