7 Cathedrals Not only do Cathedrals come in all shapes and sizes, they are built at all times of the day and very often outside of one s 9 to 5 job. Bricklayers WHEN I think of the first bricklayer, I think there are generally three particular types. One type is the occasional bricklayer, who for the most part is able to pull herself/himself back to seeing the cathedral or at least seeing the wall. The next type is what I call the noble bricklayer. He or she has a good attitude, will give you an honest day s work for an honest day s pay, but view the job as simply a job. The third type of bricklayer is generally disengaged, simply punching the clock and stuck in bricklayer status. Disengaged Bricklayer Fewer than 1 in 3 employees (31%) are engaged and nearly 1 in 5 (17%) are disengaged. More and more employees seem to be looking for opportunities outside their current employer. Employees view opportunities to apply their talents as top drivers of job satisfaction. Likely to trust their immediate managers than the executives in their organization Disengaged Bricklayer Relationships trump skills, that is, employees knowledge of their managers as people, appears to impact engagement levels more than actions alone. Less than two thirds (61%) of respondents say they plan to remain with their organization through the next 12 months. Employee Engagement Report conducted by Blessing & White, 2011 Wall Builder The second bricklayer in our story could at least see the wall. Gallop categorizes this bricklayer as not engaged. These employees are essentially checked out. They re sleepwalking through their workday, putting time but not energy or passion into their work. Cathedral Builder Full engagement, on the other hand, occurs at the alignment of maximum job satisfaction and maximum job contribution. Contrast these two variables with Bricklayer 1, 2, and the Cathedral Builder. Just simply walk the halls and catch a glimpse of employees computer screens, as workers peruse a host of non business websites and social media. Gallup Organizational Research 7

What can we do to help others see themselves as a Builders? In your Organization, are there more bricklayers or cathedral builders? Dynamics of 2 Bricklayers WE CANNOT UNDERESTIMATE the dynamics between two or more bricklayers and the influence they have on each other. In fact, negative workplace relationships may be a big part of why so many employees are not engaged with their jobs. How Do We Help? A PERSONNEL TODAY SURVEY (July 2008) of 350 human resources professionals found that The greatest factor in workplace productivity is a positive environment in which employees feel appreciated. According to the survey, two thirds of the respondents said they felt significantly more productive when they received recognition for their work, while the remainder said they felt in general more productive. How Do We Help? Just simply feeling productive can actually be a motivator. When employees don t feel productive, frustration sets in, according to 84 % of the survey respondents. In fact, 20 % said they felt angry or depressed when they weren t able to work as hard as they could. In short, most employees desire and will see the Cathedral if we simply create an environment for them to do so. 8

9 Creating More Cathedral Builders Be sincerely interested in your employees as people and colleagues Appreciate and value Differences Give immediate feedback. Utilize the talent of your employees. The worst feeling in the world is wanting to get in the game and contribute but the coach is ignoring you. Be interested, understanding, and supportive of your employees life outside the workplace. Set Goals that a Living Person Can Do Develop a Life of Purpose Purpose doesn t drain energy A Person with a life of purpose receives his or her energy from the intrinsic desire to accomplish things far greater than an individual s skills and ability would logically dictate. Purpose isn t a burden Purpose isn t selfish; it s selfless A person with a life of purpose consistently has eyes open looking for opportunities to support the betterment of others. It restores joy Purpose doesn t measure impact; it just impacts purpose How do I Get Purpose?
