2 The goal of the Transfer & Commuter Connections peer mentor position is to assist incoming transfer and veteran students with a successful transition to Northern Arizona University. Mentors work in many capacities with incoming and current transfers. Transfer Peer Mentors are vital to the success of our transfer initiatives. To this end, mentors are required to apply the following qualifications and traits to the role of a mentor. Appropriate and extensive training will be provided and is required for the position. JOB FUNCTIONS OUTLINE: TRANSFER & COMMUTER CONNECTIONS PEER MENTOR APPLICATION INFORMATION MENTOR QUALIFICATIONS Currently enrolled at Northern Arizona University Transferred to NAU from another institution At least sophomore class standing Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (this can include your transfer college GPA) Must complete 1 credit hour mentoring class Complete: SafeZone, Bystander & all other additional training and hiring paperwork before the end of the spring semester. Must limit outside commitments to 15 hours including other employment (Cannot be a RA or have an internship in the fall semester) MENTOR TRAITS Positive attitude and enthusiasm for helping others Strong leadership skills and a desire to further develop them Organized and dependable, and possess interpersonal skills working with a diverse group Outgoing personality and an interest in sharing personal/professional experiences Ability to establish a supportive, not dependent, relationship Basic knowledge of NAU support services/programs Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in many modes Open to evaluation and input from experienced mentors and supervisors Ability to be flexible in a dynamic mentoring role that has evolving duties Be knowledgeable and an experienced guide and role model for incoming transfer students there is a high volume in the fall semester with many responsibilities TPMs assist some mentees with personal, academic challenges and work to ensure that transfer shock isn t an issue. Meet with assigned students and be responsible for communicating using other methods (e.g. , Facebook, phone calls, texting, etc.) during times you aren t meeting in person

3 Provide basic advisement on prerequisite requirements for the major, including information about academic policies and procedures Help students achieve their goals by providing structure, support, feedback, and referrals Provide assistance with NAU specific resources (LOUIE, Blackboard, academic advisement reports, etc.) Maintain student files using an online database and communicate with supervisors about student progress and/or needs Mentors are expected to give presentations about T&CC /and personal transfer experiences (with training) Represent transfer students and T&CC within the university and our departmental partnerships Attend events with mentees (i.e. college and/or program-sponsored events, major-specific presentations) Assist with the coordination of program activities, social, academic and networking events for program participants throughout the year to ensure that goals and objectives are being met Help promote all T&CC events within our target population Possibly work the T&CC front desk (additional training provided not all mentors work the front desk) Outreach to transfer students throughout the admissions/enrollment process Mentors also serve in many professional capacities as representatives of T&CC and the university. BREAKDOWN OF TIME PER WEEK (can vary week to week): Desk hours: varies (not required) Presentations: 1 hour Meetings with student participants: 3 hours Event planning (per week): 1 Research & prep for meetings: 1 hour Weekly staff meeting: 1 hour Documentation of notes: 1 hour meeting (bi-monthly): min REQUIRED TRAINING Level 1 Training is REQUIRED for all new mentors during the first semester hired. Training will be conducted in an 8 week one-credit evening class. It is tentatively scheduled to begin the week of March 20th Level 1 Mentor Certification is available upon completion of training and completion of direct mentoring hours (50 in-person mentoring hours). Level 2 (Advanced Mentor) and Level 3 (Master Mentor) training are optional and will be offered at a later date. Additional REQUIRED meetings & training will be held throughout the year. My favorite thing about mentoring is how rewarding it feels to have someone enter a meeting very confused and frustrated, then leave feeling confident they have the tools to succeed!
