No Section 1: Purpose Perform routine and non-routine collection and/or analyses of samples from a variety of environments, using a range of equipment in accordance with procedures to meet customer quality and time expectations and regulatory and operational requirements, with minimal or no supervision Policy owner: Manager, Recruitment & Onboarding Page 1 of 6

2 Section 2: Key accountabilities and outcomes/tasks Technical accountabilities Perform sampling or analytical roles, as appropriate to the business area and depending on the team the employee is assigned to. Tasks may include collecting samples, receiving samples, sample preparation, sample extraction, sample concentration, sample analysis, and the operation and calibration of scientific instrumentation. Field & Laboratory - Routine chemical or biological analysis of water and wastewater products in accordance with procedures - Operate field and laboratory instruments and equipment in accordance with training and instruction - Field instruments and equipment include water quality instruments such as thermometers, multiprobes, amperometric titrators, colorimeter, turbidity meters, autosamplers, depth samplers, ground water sampler, sediment grabs and soil augers - Laboratory instruments and equipment include TOC, O&G, BOD, FIA, IC, HPLC and GC with specific detectors (FID and ECD), spectrophotometer, robot, PCR and IMS (and AAS, ICPAES, ICPMS and GCMS under supervision) - Identify problems and undertake problem solving appropriate to level - Check relevant data entry for accuracy, report unusual results and issues immediately to a Supervisor, Team Leader or Manager - Ability and willingness to learn new tasks, methods, instruments and equipment, as appropriate - Complete tasks on time, to expected quality and at the expected cost (when known) - Work cooperatively with team members to ensure customer requirements are met and operations are efficient - Provide on-the-job training to other staff as required - Demonstrate continued willingness to cross train and be amenable to rotation through all areas of Laboratory Services, as appropriate. - Undertake collection and analysis of samples, which may include water, soil, sediment and spoil - Where appropriate, receipt samples in accordance with procedures - Carry out internal audits as required and in accordance with training provided - Work safely, undertake risk assessments and report hazards and incidents Need to be available for additional out of hours work or to be on call. Must be available to work on a rostered basis on weekends and public holidays. Within area of expertise: - Address or redirect queries or concerns raised by the public or internal partners - Collaborate with staff of Sydney Water to meet requirements - Communicate effectively with internal partners, clients and the public Section 4: Capability Knowledge, skills and experience Basic knowledge Formal education required. - A relevant tertiary qualification (Degree and/or Certificate in Science) or minimum one-year experience within a related scientific discipline Skills Specific skills, software packages or licences required to perform the position and at what level. - Awareness of safety requirements related to the role and ability to demonstrate personal responsibility for safety - Ability to use computers and tablets and associated software, including Microsoft Windows and Office and various mobile devices - Ability to learn computer software packages used within a laboratory or field sampling environment (e.g. lab information system, scheduling software) - Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills - Demonstrated ability to complete tasks with minimal or no supervision - Where required by the role (e.g. field sampling and aquatic ecology), a valid driver s licence - Senior First Aid certificate or willingness to obtain to meet operational requirements Policy owner: Manager, Recruitment & Onboarding Page 4 of 6

5 - Willing to obtain required inoculations such as Hepatitis A, B and tetanus Experience Experience needed for the position. - Minimum one-year experience within a related scientific discipline or a relevant tertiary qualification Additional knowledge and skills Desirable knowledge, skills or experience needed for the position. - Knowledge of handling and storage of potentially hazardous materials. For roles that include field activities: - Experience in operating 4WD vehicles off-road and in operating commercial vehicles such as a van and larger utility vehicle - Valid boat licence and experience in operating water craft - Capable of obtaining a certificate to work in a Confined Space if relevant to the role - Ability to work in geographic locations within Sydney Water's area of responsibility without supervision Physical requirements Field worker Description: Works in a field location on a daily basis and may be exposed to unfavourable conditions and/or situations with a high safety risk. For example, trades staff, production staff, construction workers and laboratory technicians. Physical job demands Maintain appropriate fitness to safely perform the requirements of the role including lifting, carrying, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, repetitive bending, kneeling, squatting, walking on uneven ground Recommendation I recommend that the position description be authorised.
