4 WHAT IS A RESUME? A FIRST Impression. Keep it concise and to the point! A Summary of your experience and skills (education, co-curricular, professional) A LIVING document - always changing It directly relates to the specific position you are applying to

5 WHAT A RESUME IS NOT: A list of your entire professional and academic career Your life story One standard document that never changes Your whole application Remember you ll include other materials such as a cover letter, application, portfolio

6 THE BIG PICTURE How do my skills, work/co-curricular history, and academic background meet the needs of the potential employer for this position? How can I convince an employer that I CAN do the job, WILL DO the job, and will FIT IN with the organization? HINT: Put yourself in the employer s shoes

7 WHAT DOES THE EMPLOYER WANT? Do your research! What are the position requirements? - Review job description What is the company like? - What is their strategic plan? - How can I contribute? - Who would I be working with?

8 HOW CAN I CONTRIBUTE? Demonstrate your EXPERIENCE & SKILL Prove you can do the job based on past experience, education and skills COMMITMENT Show that you are committed through your persistence (How long do you typically stay in a job? Did you earn a degree?) FIT/MATCH: Show that you will fit in with their organization and the requirements of the position

11 CONTACT INFORMATION Include name, address, phone and Use the contact information you would want the employer to use to contact you or include current and permanent address info Make your name stand out! Make sure your address and voic are professional

12 EDUCATION Make sure you list the correct degree name! Include minors, double-majors You don t need to include other schools attended unless you think it s relevant You can include the following if you think it is substantial and positive: relevant coursework, GPA, study abroad, certifications

14 RELEVANT EXPERIENCE Include your RELEVANT experience List in reverse chronological order Demonstrate your accomplishment/results! Highlight leadership roles Average 3-4 bullet statements per position Use concise phrases starting with action verb Pay attention to Tense: Present vs. Past Include Quantifiable or tangible results Be positive, but don t over-exaggerate

15 EXAMPLE OF PROFESSIONAL WORK EXPERIENCE SECTION Architectural Intern May 2012-August 2012 XYZ Architects Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Generated experiential sketches for presentations for the lead principal. Documented existing site conditions for on-site coordinator. Assisted with schematic design and construction documents. Performed administrative duties such as copying, filing and answering phones.

16 MORE EXAMPLES Managed a student organization of 30 students that focused on public service in the local community. Coordinated a back to school kick off event to help promote the ABC club. Assisted in the development and implementation of Fashion Shau by promoting the event through social media.

21 COVER LETTERS Use a consistent look in your application materials Remember it s one component of your application Proofread! Have someone review it Address the letter to a specific person Keep it to 1 page in length - Be concise! Tell an employer what YOU can do for them Research the employer s needs and demonstrate knowledge of the position and company Use the language in the job description Adapted from OSU Career Connection, Fall 2010

22 COVER LETTERS 1 st Paragraph: Introduction - introduce yourself, which position you are apply to, where you found the posting and why you are applying 2 nd Paragraph: Make your case - Point out the experience and skills that makes you qualified for the position and include achievements that are related to the position 3 rd Paragraph: Summarize - Summarize your qualifications and the position you are applying to.
