1 POSITION DESCRIPTION Salary range: Member Development Officer, Level 1-3 Hours of work: In accordance with the New South Wales Nurses and Midwives' Association (NSWNMA) Employment Enterprise Agreement Status: Approved Position: Member Development Officer, Member Organising Team (MO) Reporting to: Manager, MO 1. Purpose and scope of your position: Purpose Responsibilities 1. To increase membership density in targeted workplaces 2. To identify and provide development to activists 3. To promote the formation of workplace Branches 1. Work in accordance with NSWNMA Policy and Procedures 2. To contribute to the performance of the team 3. Maintain a plan of work which ensures that workplace visits, team meetings, scheduled RDOs and meetings with team manager are undertaken 4. Assist with the preparation of organising cycles as directed by manager 5. Identify and develop activists 6. Identify sector leaders and involve them in regional or sector networks 7. Promote the formation of local workplace branches 8. Participate in campaigns as directed 9. Monitor compliance with Award and legislation 10. Debrief with peers 11. Acquire, develop and maintain knowledge of employers and employer associations 12. Provide mobilising guidance and development to local activists to plan Member Development Officer, MO Page 1 of 6

2 and conduct workplace activities themselves 13. Prepare reports, briefing notes and correspondence as required 14. Maintain current file notes or update Thin Client in relation to member activation and issues 15. Prepare reports (including any supporting material) as directed and within the required timeframe 16. Represent the Association on internal working groups and external committees as directed 17. Establish and maintain effective relationships with other teams within the Association 18. A good command of the English language both written and oral 9. Demonstrated capacity to listen and use active listening techniques 10. PC skills a. Able to demonstrate a capacity to use the basic functions of a pc and commitment to learn to use applications b. Able to do basic internet searches and use Administrative Skills Demonstrate a willingness to learn Demonstrate a proficiency in telephone manner Demonstrate a proficiency in writing file notes, reports, letters 11. Full and current NSW drivers licence DESIRABLE 1. Demonstrated commitment to the NSWNMA essential for members 2. Experience in working in a range of workplaces 3. Experience of working for a union 4. Experience in community organising or groups 5. Potential candidate for Organising Works 6. Active participation or organising of local groups 7. Successful establishment of networks relating to a social justice or industrial issue 8. Capacity to demonstrate member mobilisation frameworks in a realistic, one-toone context 9. Demonstrated ability to think analytically 10. Ability to speak, read and write in a second language which is common amongst members in the target area 3. Define the authority and influence of the position: 1. Work with other employees of the Association to facilitate co-operation between all teams of the Association and role model professional behaviour at all times 2. Provide support, advice, mentoring and leadership to colleagues, activists and other unionists to promote systematic or growth organising 3. Promote planning and review as the basis for embedding strategic organising with in the union 4. Encourage compliance with Association policies by all employees of the Association 5. Ensure that work is documented and recorded Ensure that database is up to date Ensure that relevant information is documented for the various stakeholders Ensure that Council and CoD via the Team Manager are appraised of relevant information via team manager. 1. Achieve negotiated outcomes consistent with union policy or refer unresolved issues for further action 2. Issues are limited to the matters relating to the support of Branch formations Ensure that any issue requiring attention is referred to the team manager in a timely manner Represent the Association ensuring that contribution reflects the policy and vision of the Association Share and seek out information with other teams Providing Support 6a. Improve own professional knowledge and skill relevant to position: 1. Be an active participant in all team meetings 2. Undertake appropriate in-service training and skills 3. Review and reflect on major member growth and activation experiences and workplace visits to improve skills and member mobilisation 4. Attendance at appropriate conferences and training seminars 5.
