1 Frequently Asked Questions Aboriginal Opportunities on the Hunter Expressway, Kurri Kurri to Branxton The Hunter Expressway involves building a four lane freeway link between the F3 Freeway near Seahampton, and the New England Highway, west of Branxton. As you know, the project is being delivered under two separate packages of work. Abigroup has been contracted to Design and Construct 27 km of the expressway from Kurri Kurri to Branxton. Abigroup has grown to become one of Australia s largest construction contractors and have undertaken some of Australia s most significant and prominent road, rail, industrial and infrastructure projects. We will work together with many stakeholders and subcontractors, to deliver the project to benefit the Hunter Region. You can find detailed information about the project on the RTA website: ndex.html On the Hunter Expressway we have an Aboriginal Participation Plan, which provides the affirmative action approach we will take to provide employment and training opportunities. This has been developed based on the NSW Aboriginal Participation in Construction Guidelines. We have put together the following questions and answers to help the aboriginal communities understand the opportunities that exist with Abigroup when building the expressway. Question 1 What are the opportunities available on the Hunter Expressway Kurri Kurri to Branxton Project? There are six main opportunities to work on the Hunter Expressway Kurri Kurri to Branxton Project. These are: 1. Applying directly for Workforce roles including operators, labourers, concretors, Leading Hands and experienced bridge carpenters. 2. Applying directly for Staff roles e.g. administration, under graduate engineers, qualified civil engineers, professional support roles (environment, safety, quality etc). 3. Applying for a Traineeship (Certificate II in Civil Construction, Certification II in Conservation and Land Management, Certificate II in Business) or an Apprenticeship (e.g. carpentry). 4. Applying for jobs with an employment agency (labour hire) that provide the Hunter Expressway Kurri Kurri to Branxton with casual labour. 5. Applying for job opportunities with Hunter Expressway Kurri Kurri to Branxton subcontractors on the project. Subcontractors may have vacancies on the Hunter Expressway Kurri Kurri to Branxton Project. 6. If you are an Aboriginal civil construction business (e.g. Fencing Contractor, Plant Hire Company etc) you are encouraged to participate in the procurement packages on a commercially competitive basis. Question 2 Where are these work opportunities located? The work location will be based in our site office, to be located at 1054 Old Maitland Road, Sawyers Gully, with our work site spanning 27 kilometres from Kurri Kurri to Branxton. 1

2 Question 3 When are these opportunities available? The majority of the positions are available now, however the traineeship positions will become available in the second half of 2011, from August/September. Question 4 How do I apply for an opportunity to work on the Hunter Expressway Kurri Kurri to Branxton Project? There are a number of ways to apply for opportunities to work on the Hunter Expressway Kurri Kurri to Branxton Project. Please refer to page 4. Question 5 What qualification would be a benefit for getting a job on the Hunter Expressway Kurri Kurri to Branxton Project? Having the Workcover accredited White Card (previously Green Card) is a requirement for all people working on this Project. Question 6 What does the recruitment process involve for direct employment? Once you have applied for a vacancy through the Abigroup Careers Website, you will receive an automatic notification confirming your details have been received. From this point; 1. Your job application will be reviewed and assessed by Hunter Expressway Kurri Kurri to Branxton Human Resources (HR) and the recruiting managers and if you meet the criteria for the role, you will be contacted via phone for initial screening. 2. From the phone screening, candidates will be short listed and; (i) (ii) Unsuccessful candidates will be notified via Successful candidates will be invited to come in for an interview with HR and the recruiting manager. 3. Attending an interview will give you an opportunity to discuss your skills, experience and your suitability to the role, as well as for Abigroup to provide you with further details about the project and position. You will be requested for proof of aboriginality at the interview. 4. Your suitability to the role will be assessed post interview and if you are considered the right fit, we will request details of two (2) referees, and reference checks will be completed. 5. The next step will involve a pre employment medical, including Drug and Alcohol Testing. 6. Successful progression through the above stages will result in an offer of employment to join the Abigroup on the Hunter Expressway Kurri Kurri to Branxton Project. Question 7 What does the recruitment process involve for applications through labour hire and subcontractors? If you apply for a role through a labour hire company or subcontractor, your application will follow the recruitment process as per that particular organisation. When you are referred to Abigroup as a suitable applicant, you will be invited to attend an interview and follow the process detailed above including Step 3, 4 & 5, prior to commencing a role on the Hunter Expressway Kurri Kurri to Branxton Project, as your host employer. 5 STEP 5 Option 2: Applying for a Traineeship Abigroup will offer Traineeships in Civil Construction, Conservation and Land Management and Business. At least 15 will be filled with Aboriginal applicants. We will be holding an information session on the 5 th of August 2011 at a location to be advised. All Aboriginal applicants interested in applying for a Traineeship are welcome to attend this information session to obtain more information and to complete an application. To be eligible to apply for a Traineeship, you must meet ALL of the following criteria: Ability to prove Aboriginality At least 17 years of age Resume of last 3 years 2 contactable references Ability to provide a negative Drug & Alcohol screen Ability to get to the bus pick up and drop off zones Option 3: Applying for roles via a subcontractor Abigroup encourages our subcontractors to set employment and training targets. These targets are not mandatory, but encouraged. Over the upcoming months we will be working with the Aboriginal Stakeholders to provide a point of contact for Subcontractors looking to engage Aboriginal employees. Please speak to your local Aboriginal Representatives to obtain details about sub contractor contact details that are working on the project.
