1 VILLAGE OF LA GRANGE JOB DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: DEPARTMENT: REPORTS TO: Crew Leader (Including Forester and Mechanic) Public Works Director of Public Works Appointment Appointment of this position is made by the Director of Public Works with the approval of the Village Manager. General Statement of Duties Under the general supervision of the Public Works Director, this position performs a variety of skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair and construction of streets, water and sewer systems; Forestry; Vehicle Maintenance; Building Maintenance and other activities. An employee in this position will oversee General Utility Workers in the field, work independently, and exercise good judgment and initiative. This employee reports directly to the Foreman and works in conjunction with other Crew Leaders and General Utility Workers. General Duties and Responsibilities Operates a variety of heavy trucks and equipment in the repair, maintenance and construction of public works systems and utilities and the maintenance of the urban forest; Inspects and maintains vehicles and equipment; reports malfunctions to supervisor; Maintains availability to respond to emergency situations during non-working hours; Assists with snow plowing and ice control functions; Develops written reports to document work activities; Oversees General Utility Workers in the field to complete assigned tasks; Works independently to complete assigned tasks and exercises good leadership and judgment in completing work; Reviews and evaluates other employee s performance as required; Performs related work as assigned; Ensures adherence to safety rules, procedures, and use of equipment; Advises supervisors of techniques or other enhancements to provide efficient service. When Assigned to the Street Division Maintains and repairs streets and roadways; performs asphalt and concrete maintenance and repairs curbs and sidewalks; seals cracks and patches potholes; clears roads during hazardous weather and other conditions including winter snow and ice events and floods; Assists in maintaining Village right-of-ways including leaf and brush collection; Assumes leadership role of crews during snow and other emergency operations; Revision - 10/19/2016 Page 1 of 6 Employee s Initials

2 Fabricates, installs and maintains all Village signage, applies and maintains pavement marking materials; Assists in the maintenance and repair of parking lots and parking facilities; Maintains safety awareness of those policies directly relative to the Street Division including use of proper traffic control and protection, and personal protective equipment. When Assigned to the Forestry Division Maintains the urban forest which includes planting, removal, trimming, and general care of trees and shrubs; performs mowing of Village property; maintains all flower beds; Performs brush collection, prepares civic displays and assists with landscape improvements; Maintains safety awareness of those policies directly relative to the forestry operation including fall protection and personal protective equipment. When Assigned to the Water and Sewer Division Maintains the supply and distribution of the water system including water main breaks, pump station, hydrants, valves, b-boxes and elevated and ground storage tanks; Maintains the sanitary and storm sewer systems; Maintains and installs water meters and performs water shut offs and turn ons; Maintains safety awareness of those policies directly relative to the utilities operation including trenching and shoring, chlorine safety, and confined space entry. When Assigned to the Vehicle Maintenance Division Maintains all Public Works equipment including all vehicles, tractors, small power equipment, rollers, bobcats, trailers and other equipment; Performs seasonal switch over equipment for leaf season, snow season, and asphalt work; Performs preventative maintenance to all equipment on established schedules including tire rotation, oil changes, and other routine repairs; Keeps track of maintenance performed and inventory; Develops appropriate recording and reporting mechanisms for work; Maintains safety awareness of those policies directly relative to the Vehicle Maintenance Division including proper tool safety, use of motor vehicle lifts and use of personal protective equipment. When Assigned to the Buildings, Grounds and Street Light Division Maintains all municipal facilities including maintenance of HVAC equipment, roofs, electrical, and plumbing systems; Performs carpentry work as required; Oversees maintenance of Village s street lighting including the replacement of lighting units, bulbs, control cabinets, and other associated equipment; Maintains safety awareness of those policies directly relative to the Building, Grounds and Street Light Division including proper tool safety, electrical safety practices, use of ladders and use of personal protective equipment. 3 When Assigned to the Central Business District (CBD) Division Maintains all sidewalks and streets throughout the Central Business District (CBD) including the removal of trash, power washing, repair of public furniture, sweeping and blowing of sidewalks and streets; Coordinates special events within the CBD including putting up and removing signs and barricades and other general maintenance; Removes garbage from bins throughout the Central Business District; Maintains safety awareness of those policies directly relative to the Central Business District Division including adherence to equipment manufacturer s safety requirements, and use of personal protective equipment. Education High School Diploma or equivalent. Experience Prior experience as a General Utility Worker, laborer or maintenance worker. License and Certifications All Divisions - Must have the ability to obtain a valid Illinois Class B commercial driver s license with air brake, tanker and hazardous material endorsements within 30 days of employment and be able to comply with all IDOT mandated drug/alcohol testing. Forestry Division - The need to possess or have the ability to acquire a State of Illinois Pesticide Applicators License and a Certified Arborist Certificate from the Illinois Arborist Association. Water/Sewer Division - The need to possess or have the ability to acquire a State of Illinois Water Operators License. Vehicle Maintenance Division The need to possess or have the ability to acquire an ASE Mechanics License or equivalent experience. Material and Equipment Used Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery such as heavy trucks, end loaders, aerial lifts (up to 65 feet) pavers, rollers, excavating equipment, post installers and removers, hand and power tools, and mowers, and requires the ability to maintain and repair complex equipment and machinery. Specific visual demands required by this job include close, distance, peripheral and color vision.
