1 POSITION DESCRIPTION TITLE: Director, Athletics CATEGORY: Administrative FLSA STATUS: Exempt GRADE: C JOB SUMMARY: The Director instructs, plans, implements, and directs the athletic programs at the College in compliance with the rules and regulations of the National Junior College Athletic Association and Region V. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Responsible for the overall coaching of the College team sports; supervise all recruitment activities within the intercollegiate athletic program to ensure compliance with Western Junior College Athletic Conference (WJCAC), Regional V, and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA); responsible for recruiting, teaching, tutoring, instructing, encouraging, and promoting high academic and athletic standards; coordinate housing and scheduling for athletic contests. YEARLY PERCENT OF TIME 40% 2. Responsible for overseeing, planning, designating, and execution of various athletic programs in coordination with WJCAC, Regional V, and NJCAA guidelines; supervise, evaluate, and direct all aspects of the athletic program(s), ensure student-athletes are in compliance and meet all eligibility qualifiers; implement and evaluate short-and long-range goals and objectives. 3. Supervise, evaluate, and provide personal and professional leadership to the coaches and staff of the athletics programs ensuring staff compliance training as appropriate. 4. Serve as primary contact for WJCAC, Regional V, and NJCAA; represent the College at conferences and regional meetings; develop and maintain athletic programs that ensure athletic events are in compliance with WJCAC, Regional V, and NJCAA rules, regulations, policies and procedures, and meet the District s educational mission. 5. Coordinate communication between administration, coaching staff, and instructional staff; work with Counseling department, faculty, and other areas as appropriate to ensure student athletes receive needed intervention and academic assistance in a timely manner. 6. Market the athletic programs among students, faculty, staff, and the community; develop a successful athletics fund raising program; collect and maintain studentathlete data in order to provide accurate information for reports and information about the progression of the athletic programs Prepare and operate the intercollegiate budget and provide fiscal overview for the Effective: 09/17/18 Page 1 of 5

2 athletic programs; oversee athletic facilities to include making recommendations for facilities and equipment improvements. 8. Responsible for personnel management activities of assigned staff, including recommendation for employment, supervision, performance evaluation, guidance, support concerning professional development training, and compliance with policies and regulations. 9. Perform other duties as assigned. REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Vice President of Student & Enrollment Services SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manages department staff. This position will also have supervisory responsibilities over the assistant coaches and will be responsible for the student-athletes during travel to and from games. BUDGET RESPONSIBILITIES: Departmental budget. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: Master s Degree EPERIENCE: Four (4) years of related experience. CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES: Valid driver s license and eligible for insurability. SPECIAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES: 1. Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of intercollegiate athletics rules and regulations; Effective planning and organizational skills; Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of the institution to include the public; Ability to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures; Ability to travel for team practices, competition and scouting; Experience leading and managing personnel; Effective communication, written and verbal, and interpersonal skills; Experience developing and executing budgets; Ability to plan appropriately to meet strict timelines; Ability to work in a diverse environment and be sensitive to issues of diversity and inclusion. 2. Equipment Used: Personal Computer and other equipment associated with a general office environment (copier, phone, fax, etc.) 3. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. INTERPERSONAL SKILLS: Alternative or combined skills in understanding, negotiating, selecting, developing, and motivating people are important to the highest degree due to constant interaction with other people, at any level within the organization or the community, position s accountability for the development, motivation, assessment, and reward of employees, and to deal with irrational situations where the outcome is unpredictable. WORKING CONDITIONS: While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
