1 Faculty of Business Leeds University Business School (LUBS) Socio-Technical Centre (STC) Research Assistant Fixed term for 12 months, commencing as soon as possible Based at Leeds, but 50% of time will be spent at Rolls Royce site in Derby, with some occasional time also in Bristol You will be an outstanding person who has recently completed a relevant Master s course and is seeking to gain experience and development. You are likely to have a background in a field such as Occupational/ Organisational Psychology, Organisational Behaviour, Human Resource Management or a similar area. You will work with Professor Chris Clegg and colleagues on a research project funded by Rolls-Royce plc. The project forms part of the portfolio of work undertaken within the Socio-Technical Centre. You will have an MSc or PhD in a relevant subject area and subject knowledge in the area of socio-technical thinking and practice. 2 Job Description Responsible to: Professor Chris Clegg Reports to: Kasia Cichomska Main Duties and Responsibilities The post will involve a mix of the following activities, including: Working closely with industrial and academic partners to undertake research on a set of applied problems Undertaking fieldwork and collecting data using a range of techniques Undertaking literature reviews Analysing, interpreting, and summarising data and findings Disseminating the findings, specifying their implications, and making recommendations for change Writing up the research in the form of company presentations and reports, and academic conference and journal papers Providing necessary support to the project at Rolls-Royce (RR) (The main base for this post will be Leeds, however, it is expected that around 50% of time will be spent on the RR site in Derby with some time required in Bristol) Any other duties as may reasonably be required, consistent with the grade of the post Personal Development There will be excellent opportunities for career and personal development, and you will be encouraged to pursue BPS Chartership or its professional equivalent. 5 Further Information about the post Purpose of the Post You will join a team of researchers working with Rolls-Royce plc. The project follows from earlier work conducted within the organisation as part of the SILOET (Strategic Investment in Low-Carbon Engine Technology) programme, which involves working with RR to investigate the sharing, capture and reuse of knowledge created in and from work-related conversations (meetings and s). The objectives of the project are: To provide critical support to the improvement of meeting and effectiveness across the global Engineering function (13,500 staff) To revise and combine existing sets of best practice guidance materials To provide advice and guidance on the implementation and delivery of a large scale change programme from a socio-technical perspective To assist in the evaluation of the implementation To provide interim and final reports and presentations describing the status, deployment and effectiveness of the work, including an assessment of benefits To deliver final set of best practice documentation (process and guidelines) based on lessons learned from all of the above activities Background This post has become available as part of an ongoing work with Rolls-Royce plc (RR). The Socio Technical Centre (STC) was set up at the end of It is a multidisciplinary long term project. Our aims are to understand human behaviour in complex systems and thereby to develop a step-change improvement in our capability to design new systems. These include new buildings, infrastructures, services, ways of working, business models and computer systems. The benefits to society will vary depending on circumstances but potentially include improvements in sustainability, well-being, health and performance. The Vision for the STC is to: Achieve a step-change in our inter-disciplinary capability to design buildings, infrastructures, ways of working, services, business models and computer systems Establish ourselves as international leaders in organisational psychology The Objectives are to: Undertake world class inter-disciplinary research into socio-technical design
