1 JOB ANNOUNCEMENT & POSITION DESCRIPTION Associate Director of Marketing, Communications & Events Position Description The Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District (MVT CID) seeks an innovative and dynamic Associate Director of Marketing, Communications & Events to join a small, highly entrepreneurial team to work on various dayto-day and long-term marketing communications assignments involving (1) external communications, (2) event planning and execution, (3) marketing material production, (4) digital communications and (5) stakeholder/partner relations and engagement. The Associate Director of Marketing, Communications & Events will be encouraged to devise long-term branding and community engagement strategies for the organization and will be given the opportunity to take the lead on such initiatives. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who possesses a high degree of intellectual curiosity and is comfortable working with minimal supervision and within a fast-paced environment. The incumbent is also someone with a passion for stakeholder engagement, community and economic development, urban district management and placemaking. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to work with place management organizations such as Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), or who seeks to advance their career in marketing, communications, public relations and affairs, and/or event planning. Strong interest in community and cultural planning, particularly as it relates to social equity and inclusive development, is an additional differentiator that will distinguish ideal candidates. The MVT CID believes strongly that advancing strategies to responsibly contribute to unmet societal needs while raising the bottom for what s possible in mixed-use, mixed-income downtown neighborhood is critical toward enhancing our ability to successfully fulfill the community s innate potential and seeks the interest of candidates whose professional and personal values align with this organizational ethos. Please note that this is an individual contributor position with minimal-to-no supervisory responsibility. The expectation therefore is that incumbents for this role will have the requisite capabilities, experience, professionalism and maturity that will enable them to meet (and exceed) all performance objectives associated with this opportunity beginning day one of their tenure. About the Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District The MVT CID is a private, 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization established in 2004 to enhance the overall quality of life for residents, employees and visitors, and to increase commercial opportunities for business and property owners, in the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood of downtown Washington, DC. It is funded by a supplemental real property tax on both residential and commercial properties. Since its inception close to 15 years ago, the MVT CID is considered one of Washington DC s best examples of a thoughtfully planned, carefully coordinated mixed-use community. The MVT CID is at the heart of the city both geographically and culturally and is a welcoming, authentic and centered neighborhood that mirrors the District s unique mix of historic and modern buildings, longtime and new residents, and diverse cultures, restaurants and experiences. A member of the DC BID Council ( and DC Sustainable Transportation, the MVT CID is one of Washington, DC s 11 Business Improvement Districts that sits at the intersection of the public and private sectors and strives to serve as an effective catalyst for growth and improvement on behalf of our stakeholders. We are steadfast in both our clean and safe mission as well as our aspiration to be the next great destination of choice for anyone who chooses to live, work, do business and entertain in the District of Columbia. 2 Reporting Relationships Positon reports to the MVT CID President & CEO Responsibilities Strategy Development: In coordination with the President & CEO and Chair of the MVT CID Marketing Committee, annually prepare overarching strategic marketing plans and corresponding task-specific work plans that enhance the MVT CID s brand identity as a destination of choice among residents, workers, retailers, business and property owners, external partners and stakeholders, and other key influencers such as the media and local elected officials. Branding, Content Development & Management: Create and manage the production of high-quality written and graphic material for printing and distribution. Collaborate with team members on compelling stories for inclusion in 1-2 monthly e-newsletters; subsequently draft and distribute the e-newsletter. Manage, create and publish high-quality marketing campaigns and content through the MVT CID website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media platforms Lead the full end-to-end execution and production of the MVT CID Annual Report. Collaborate with the President & CEO, Director of Public Space Operations, Associate Director of Planning & Economic Development, Executive Committee of the Board of Directors, and the Marketing Committee to execute cultural and artistic placemaking activations within the MVT CID as well as maintain and expand the organization s public space branding efforts (e.g., the street banner program). Event Management: Propose, plan, organize, attend and manage community events including but not limited to a weekend farmers market, outdoor concerts, family programming and pet-friendly events. Coordinate contracts and logistics/staffing for MVT CID-sponsored events. Communications: Leverage previous experience to draft and disseminate press releases. Coordinate with media outlets, both print and digital, to secure earned coverage of the neighborhood, stakeholders, and CID initiatives and events. Manage crisis/emergency communications, when necessary. Stakeholder/Partner Relationship Management: Establish productive working relationships with community stakeholders, property managers, retailers, residents and external partners. Engage and collaborate with local retailers and other commercial tenants to assist in their marketing efforts (e.g., promoting the opening of a new restaurant). Regularly problem seek by conducting ongoing role-appropriate stakeholder outreach, polling and engagement; identify potential areas of improvement and value-added solutions. Work with the Chair of the MVT CID Marketing Committee to schedule, organize and facilitate regular committee meetings. Partner closely with local reporters and bloggers to promote the neighborhood, and its businesses, real estate developments and stakeholders. Organize contacts and maintain information accurately in the organization s existing Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system; communicate regularly with stakeholders/contacts to ensure lists are accurate. Maintain a calendar of external meetings and events and periodically attend stakeholder- and partner-organized activities on behalf of the MVT CID (e.g., DC BID Council Marketers Meetings). Additional Responsibilities: Proactively collaborate and communicate with team members across other MVT CID functional areas on projects and workflow. Draft, prepare and review documents and reports on behalf of team members, as requested. Respond to requests for information and communicate with stakeholders professionally and with minimal supervision. Manage the selection of third-party vendors (when necessary) as well as supervise the performance of external contractors and consultants to ensure the completion of projects. Other duties as assigned. 2

3 Technical Skills & Capabilities Required: Excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to work autonomously within a small team environment while prioritizing and managing the completion of projects timely and efficiently. Demonstrated skills with MS Office Suite programs (Word, PowerPoint, etc.). Strong command of Adobe Creative Suite programs (Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign specifically) and/or other design and publishing software. Experience with the launch/re-launch of dynamic organizational websites. Previous use and customized adaptation of CRM systems. Value-Added: Understanding of local, regional and federal dynamics as they relate to activities in the MVT CID. Experience with website editing and online coding for e-newsletter distribution. Understanding of the DDOT and NPS event permitting process. Knowledge of and interest in the local art and cultural scene. Interest in placemaking and place management (as it relates to economic development, urban planning, commercial real estate and place branding). Experience & Qualifications Bachelor s degree with a minimum of 6 years of post-baccalaureate experience in a related role. Hardworking, self-starting and self-motivated with the ability to take decisive and appropriate action. Outstanding work ethic, organizational skills and attention to detail. Proficiency in conducting Internet searches. Customer-service and solutions-orientated mindset. Ability to communicate clearly, concisely and professionally in written communication. Ability to take initiative and work independently with minimal supervision, or within a highly collaborative environment as part of a team, and to meet deadlines. Ability to interact effectively with Board members, stakeholders and other MVT CID partners. Passionate about dramatically improving the lives of people and neighborhoods. Open minded and willing to engage with those who share different opinions and beliefs. Solutions orientation with strong intellectual curiosity and a bias toward both problem seeking and problem solving. Ability to fluidly think on multiple levels including strategically, creatively and adaptively. Familiarity with District of Columbia government and agencies helpful but not required. Position Hours Core business hours are 9AM-5PM, Monday through Friday. Requires occasional work on nights and weekends in support of community events. Additional Position Requirements Position at times requires the lifting of light boxes containing marketing collateral and other event-related materials. Office space is four-story townhome walk-up with no elevator. Minimal non-dc domestic travel required. Salary Salary will be commensurate with experience and includes a very competitive benefits package.
