About us The British Council is the UK s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries. We do this by making a positive contribution to the UK and the countries we work with changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust. We work with over 100 countries across the world in the fields of arts and culture, English language, education and civil society. Each year we reach over 20 million people face-to-face and more than 500 million people online, via broadcasts and publications. Founded in 1934, we are a UK charity governed by Royal Charter and a UK public body. Geopolitical/SBU/Function overview: Italy is Tier 2 country one of only four in Europe with significant geopolitical importance (3rd largest economy in the Eurozone after France and Germany) and a significant E&E business (17m total income). It is one of the largest country operations worldwide for teaching and now features in the top ten exams operations in the world. There are around 250 contracted staff across the three centres in Milan, Rome and Naples, and a larger number of freelance teaching and examinations staff. We deliver over 55,000 teaching class hours each year from our main offices and partner premises, but all three centres have experienced decline in recent times. We deliver 55,000 exams (mostly Cambridge ESOL and IELTS) through a network of centres across the country. There is also a small but high performing Rome-based GPF team working on a range of local and regional projects in English, Arts, Education & Society. Major annual events include the Pontignano conference, now in its 26th year, the Venice Biennale, BC SIEM education fairs, and a high-profile bilateral cultural season. It is a very challenging time for all teaching and exams businesses in the western and southern part of the EU, given the economic situation and a strong competitive environment.
