1 JOB DESCRIPTION Post Title Project Manager (Major Student Projects & Events) Salary: Full/Part Time Contract Term: Full Time 2 years fixed term. Date of Writing: July 2016 Accountable to: The post holder will be responsible to the Business Development Manager. Accountable for: Hours: Location: Eligibility: Duty/General Managers plus student staff 35 hrs per week.you will be required to work anti-social hours, bank holidays and weekends. Usually located at the main Union Building and Manchester Academy, but will be required to work at other sites when required. Open to applicants with relevant skills and experience. Typical working day This role will be spent working closely with the existing events and student activities teams to ensure the operational implementation of key projects that map into Union and University priorities, including the annual Welcome Week and International Students Orientation Week, Global Week, Just Fest (to become Social Justice Week), and involvement in the student led Pangaea and Graduation Activities. Additionally you will play a key part in overseeing the flow of information between the events and student activities teams with regards to Student Society Events being held within the UMSU/Academy buildings.

2 Significant amounts of your time will be spent on internal administration, team and project meetings as well as undertaking preparation and production of relevant event related administration and in the operational management of a range of events within the UMSU building and Academy venues. The role requires a combination of desk-based working and working in venues. The role involves a high level of partnership work and will require involvement in operational working groups across the University to ensure that we are working closely together to deliver the best events and student focused projects possible. In carrying out this role you will be expected to engage in the values of UMSU and to portray a positive image of UMSU, exuding a high level of professionalism at all times and always remain solution focused. Purpose of the Role To take an operational lead on the delivery of successful collaborative events and projects that will enhance the student experience during their time at the University of Manchester. To communicate and work effectively, in a cross organisational manner working especially closely with internal teams to ensure events are successfully communicated and that their success is measured and recorded. To negotiate with and manage relationship with sub-contractors where appropriate. To develop and build on a framework of student event management activities so that clarity and expectation are defined early in the process. To work closely with staff teams across both UMSU and the University of Manchester, delivering excellent customer service levels and maintaining responsive and innovative services that meet student needs and priorities. To liaise with external and internal stakeholders, to ensure best and most appropriate use of UMSU facilities and to agree budgets and clearly define costs for the use of those facilities. Support and develop staff to deliver the priorities of the Executive Team and the Strategic Plans of the Union through effective line management, annual appraisals, and performance management methods in line with Union policies and procedures. To share best practice to promote improvement in working practice through review, evaluation and striving for excellence. Principle duties To undertake project management, planning and development tasks to deliver outstanding student focused events.

3 Ensure all stakeholders have clear information regards the expectations, operational requirements and delivery details of projects. To directly line manage a Student Events assistant To plan and manage relevant budgets, staffing and volunteers To identify commercial opportunities that could enhance student projects and to work with the Business Development Manager in developing any such opportunities. To be thoroughly familiar with and to ensure all legal requirements are met relative to Health and Safety legislation, licensing and risk management. To maintain and develop processes of operating to improve and drive the efficiency of delivery and breadth of engagement of student focused events and projects. To communicate effectively and appropriately with all relevant stakeholders when planning the delivery of events and projects. To participate in any internal or external working groups as required. To report on the operational performance relating to the delivery on a monthly basis. To act as a general/ duty manager during events and activities as required. To deliver first class student focused events and projects. To undertake all administrative aspects associated with the individual role.
