Personal Safety Involvement

PSI What is it? PSI is a tool for encouraging and supporting personal influence on safety at work What does it mean? Active visitation of the work site and offices. Proactive safety - recognizing good safety practices and reacting to unsafe acts and conditions. Active and open safety conversations among colleagues about how to work safely both in the field and office.

THE VALUE OF PSI A way to use your personal influence to improve safety at work and at home. To motivate all people to eliminate unsafe acts and conditions before an injury occurs. To work safely together knowing that your coworkers are looking out for your safety. To continue building our interdependent safety culture to improve safety performance.

HOW WE LOOK AT THINGS Changing from a mindset that: Tolerates unsafe acts. Considers safety as an additional activity. Considers safety as somebody else s responsibility. To a mindset where all our people: Feel empowered to identify and removes unsafe acts. Is proactive with regard to safety. Accepts that safety is a personal responsibility. Respond to unsafe conditions and implements effective corrective actions.

SILENT CONSENT! Is allowing a practice to continue even when you know it is wrong, it can also be interpreted as acceptance of dangerous situations. Examples of silent consents can be: Not using necessary personal protective equipment or tools on jobs that just take two minutes... Not taking the time to ensure proper hazard assessments and proper completion of PJHAs. Silently neglecting unsafe situations that you see. Silently accepting unsafe work situations.

ROUTINE WORK = Risky Behaviors All of us: Get distracted by interruptions. Get stressed and do hasty things. Forget about the necessary precautions. Get time pressured. Develop bad habits. Run into problems we don t anticipate. Encounter work that is a danger to ourselves or others.

RISKY BEHAVIORS Risky behavior creates dangerous situations. Often unintentionally. We all need help to keep our eye on the ball. Gentle reminders to others and ourselves to focus on what is most important --- safety. If risky behavior is a known cause of incidents why are we so hesitant to address it when we see it?

It isn t always easy. What might be difficult? First approach or initial contact. Anticipating the reaction. INTERVENTION Conveying your message in an appropriate, non-confrontational way. A task you don t know anything about. Hoping the person understands your point...\..\..\..\videos\kim'sdad Wayne Hodges.wmv
