1 CANDIDATE INFORMATION PACK TEMPORARY YOUTH THEATRE DIRECTOR

2 Dear Candidate Thank you for your interest in our organisation, and in the role of Temporary Youth Theatre Director for the period March August This role will oversee our two of our Youth Theatre productions, two of our creative schools projects, and provide mentoring for two of our associate artists to create independent work. We will also be delivering a brand new theatre lab for young people in August, to help stimulate future creative potential. All of the information you require is inside this pack, but if you do have questions about our work beyond this please do not hesitate to get in touch. You should also include the names of two referees who will provide us with a reference for you. If you are invited to interview we will seek your permission to ask for these before the interview. 3 JOB DESCRIPTION Post: Line Manager: Responsible for: Purpose: Temporary Youth Theatre Director Artistic Director (Day to day Report) Associate Artists To lead the artistic direction and programme of Dumfries Youth Theatre and its associated activities Main duties and responsibilities Artistic Vision & delivery The Youth Theatre Director has responsibility for the development of the Youth Theatre s work ensuring that there is a high artistic standard within the programme by collaborating and supporting the Workshop Assistants and other freelance practitioners. The role actively contributes to the creative development of Electric Theatre Workshop. oversee the vision and artistic policy of the Youth Theatre plan and programme a range of Youth Theatre workshops, projects and productions lead and support Youth Theatre sessions as appropriate direct Youth Theatre productions, as appropriate write and devise Youth Theatre productions as appropriate be actively involved in additional participatory projects for young people - as appropriate and as time allows Provide mentoring for our Associate Artists to help them create major pieces of performance. participate in Electric Theatre Workshop artistic programme delivery recruit, plan, programme and deliver all aspects of the Associate Artist programme tour productions where appropriate to other theatres/ festivals nationally Marketing & Advocacy Take responsibility for working closely with the communications team to create a clear and cohesive message about the Youth Theatre that fits in with the overall company message. The Youth Theatre Director will also raise the profile of the Youth Theatre by acting as an ambassador on their behalf as well as for the company in general. represent the Youth Theatre to the local and wider community and acting as an ambassador for Electric Theatre Workshop develop opportunities for the Youth Theatre both in-house and further afield including building links with other youth theatres and projects that involve young people Actively promote Youth Theatre projects

4 work closely with communication and sales department to manage Youth Theatre section of website, and blog Management & Administration The YCD is responsible for effective management of all aspects of the department including staff, finance and Youth Theatre membership. The development and sharing of good practice will be an important part of this. ensure that all activities working with the Youth Theatre operate within ETW s Child Protection Policy and guidelines train Associate Artists who support Youth Theatre activity manage and control Youth Theatre budgets ensure that there is effective communication with Youth Theatre members and their parents and carers work with the Youth Theatre producer to book space needed for all Youth Theatre sessions, rehearsals and production oversee pastoral care for all Youth Theatre members maintain appropriate records and compile reports as General Duties: The following responsibilities are shared by all staff members of Electric Theatre Workshop: To work for the benefit of the whole organisation To comply with all ETW policies including Equal Opportunities, Health & safety and other policies To attend regular staff meetings and other departmental meetings that may be arranged To keep up to date with the activities of the organisation To carry out administrative tasks that arise from the job Undertake additional duties as may reasonably be required

5 PERSON SPECIFICATION Qualifications: ESSENTIAL DESIRABLE Evidenced by Educated to degree level Arts degree/directing Certificates to be qualification presented. Right to Work in the UK Current First Aid qualification Right to Work documentation Knowledge Skills: and Level of knowledge required to enable a person to carry out the job. Ability to work confidently with young people of all ages and abilities. Project Management skills, especially time management and prioritisation skills Experience in drama workshop facilitation High level of interpersonal skills. Ability to work within an agreed budget Application / Interview Ability to contribute to the creative vision of Electric Theatre Workshop Excellent written and communication skills. Experience in using Social Media Experience: Good general IT skills inc. Microsoft Word and Excel Significant experience of leading a youth theatre. Application / Interview At least three years experience directing theatre. Knowledge of working in a regional producing theatre Interpersonal Skills: Ability to liaise closely with internal colleagues and external agencies Enthusiasm determination and Application / Interview Effective written and verbal communication skills Patience and a sense of humour Other Current clean driving licence Copy seen

6 Terms and Conditions Hours: Salary range: Annual leave: Probationary Period: Notice Period: 35 hours per week, as required in order to fulfil the duties of the post, including evening and weekend working. It is the responsibility of the post holder to manage their time in a resourceful manner. No overtime is payable. Up to 26,000 per annum dependent on experience 20 days + bank holidays (5.6 weeks per annum) 3 months during which the notice period is 1 week on either side Following the end of probationary period, 1 month (4 weeks) on either side IMPORTANT The successful applicant will be required to undergo a Disclosure Scotland screening, the cost of which will be met by Electric Theatre Workshop. If the successful applicant has already undergone an enhanced Disclosure Scotland screening, then Electric Theatre Workshop can check their status online. Conditional Offer of Appointment: Pre-Appointment Checks Any offer to a successful candidate will be conditional upon: Receipt of at least two references which are satisfactory to Electric Theatre Workshop (if these have not already been received). We make the ticket buying experience as easy as possible.. We collect and analyse audience data to effectively determine our current audience and participants and future areas of growth, with a particular focus on those who have never engaged with the arts. We develop our Creative Schools partnerships which will help us remove barriers to engagement and deliver meaningful arts experiences to harder-to-reach communities.

Our region is properly resourced to support programmes effectively with a strong infrastructure and thriving community of artists. Our 3-5 year Goals Scotland s national performing arts companies have a clearer manifesto for Dumfries & Galloway - and communities in the region benefit from longer term engagement and collaboration with the national companies. Local authorities in South of Scotland are working collaboratively with us to increase access to performance under the Southern Scotland touring initiative We lead the way for art form development of theatre, dance, music and emerging arts in Dumfries & Galloway. Our region is properly resourced to create effective, compelling and meaningful work, and our business is competitive and efficient. Artists connect more frequently, working across discipline and partnerships are cultivated for the benefit of others through a thriving cultural economy.

Our audience development connects international audiences we want to reach with our work Our Programmes stimulate the local economy - helping to regenerate Dumfries through a diverse programme of live performance which is sustainable longer term. Our brand becomes a reason to visit Dumfries. Visitors are inspired to explore the region more as a result of our work. We attract substantial audiences from outside the region to visit - and Cultural tourists have brilliant moments, which encourage them visit again.
