The green team development process Examples from WWF-Canada s own green team process The process of goal setting Important considerations at each stage of the process

Green teams play an integral role in driving change and sustainability within an organization Green teams connect with employees in a meaningful and engaging way on an area of shared value with the organization Successful teams evolve in order to adapt to new opportunities and demands as the organization advances the sustainability journey

a) Analyze the potential scope of work to select priority areas Sustainable Travel Consider all the elements of your organization s footprint. Carbon Footprint Waste Sustainable Materials Local Materials Sustainable Water Local Food

Using a criteria ensures that your priority areas are strategically chosen Here are some suggested criteria for you to consider: Biggest environmental impact Ability to engage employees at multiple levels and across teams Public demonstration of company leadership Integrates into existing organizational efforts Builds workplace capability in a strategic area

Example: At WWF-Canada, the green team s analysis led to the selection of three priority areas. Travel Because our conservation experts often commute and travel across the country to do their work. Because most of the day-today activity is office-related, and the most common office impacts are office supplies like paper and computer / IT systems. Procurement Waste Because we organize public events and regular direct mail campaigns which can result in unnecessary paper and packaging waste if not managed with the environment in mind.

An ideal structure will: Enable leadership and ownership over key areas of work and key infrastructure elements Provide expertise from staff already doing work in priority areas as part of their jobs Reflect an ideal team size sufficient to accomplish goals but not exceed an effective team size (usually 5 10 members) Encourage alignment with and integration across the workplace
