As many companies utilize DB2 on the Z/OS and Linux, UNIX, and Windows platforms, members are encouraged to attend presentations that focus on both or either platform to expand their knowledge of DB2 across the OS spectrum as well as many features are common across the DB2 family. The upcoming all day seminar on Wednesday, May 21 st at the Crowne Plaza in Novi, MI features two outstanding speakers. The first morning presentation will be presented Ken McDonald of BMC Software. He will discuss recent changes in z/os DB2 logging. This useful presentation provides an update on changes to how DB2 manages logging updates, etc... The second presentation of the morning will also be presented by Ken McDonald about DB2 11 Expanded RBA/LRSN. The afternoon sessions will be presented by Ken McDonald of BMC and Mike McCarthy of IBM. Overall the seminar should be a very informative one. TO REGISTER: Send an to reservations@mdug.org with your name, your membership type (Corp, Vendor or Ind.), and if appropriate the number and name of additional attendees. Reservation deadline is on Friday May 16 th, but if there are still seats available reservations will be taken up until noon on Monday May 19 th. ATTENDANCE FEES: For MDUG members, the cost for attendance at the seminar is covered by the yearly membership fee, so make sure to renew before or at the seminar. For Non-members the cost is $55 at the seminar, payment in either cash or check. Credit cards are not accepted at the door. 3 Presentation Abstracts Presentation #1: Ken McDonald (BMC Software) Recent Changes in DB2 for z/os Logging How well DB2 handles Log data can be a critical factor in maximizing performance, particularly in a high transaction rate environment. There have been a number of changes in the area of Logging over recent DB2 releases. Some of these have been obvious improvements such as the ability to use DFSMS Striping for Active Log datasets, but there have been Logging implications in some other changes such as the introduction of Reordered Row Format. However, many sites I visit have not really investigated these changes in any detail and the impact they might have on their operations. This presentation provides an update on changes to how DB2 manages logging updates and some useful hints and tips you will be able to take away and use to review your logging environment. Presentation #2: Ken McDonald (BMC Software) DB2 11 Expanded RBA/LRSN Does this bit make my tail look big DB2 has had a 6 byte RBA since the beginning and a 6 byte LRSN since DB2 Version 4. IBM is introducing the ability to optionally expand the RBA and LRSN to 10 bytes in DB2 11. This change will have fairly far reaching implications on many DB2 structures that have carried a 6 byte RBA since the beginning over 30 years ago. This presentation will raise some of those implications by discussing where RBA values currently reside in the DB2 universe. Given a DB2 11 GA announcement, more details of new formats will be provided. The source of the presentation title? Every page on a DB2 object, both table and index spaces, ends in a structure called PGTAIL. In the expanded world, this becomes PGBIGTAIL. Presentation #3: Ken McDonald (BMC Software) DB2 Production Virtualization with Profiles It is increasingly challenging to have a performance measurement/assurance environment to validate the performance of new or changed SQL. DB2 gets smarter about its environment, making it difficult to guarantee that the performance DB2 subsystem really does behave the same as the real production subsystem(s). This is why IBM have introduced Production Virtualization to "fool" a DB2 subsystem into thinking that certain 3 May 2014

4 aspects of its environment are actually different from reality - making it possible to model a production subsystem in a completely separate LPAR. This session looks at how this has been implemented - with a couple of dsnzparm changes and addition to the capabilities of DB2 Profiles. Presentation #4: Mike McCarthy () Big Data and DB2 Integration Concepts Some vendors of Big Data products are telling customers to eliminate their relational database warehouses and move to hadoop. At least, that s the hype. The reality is those products are not enterprise ready to handle the applications, workloads and performance delivered by systems like DB2. But, there is an integration story of how to use Big Data technology to complement and enhance existing systems, and to use DB2 to complement and enhance new Big Data solutions. This presentation will introduce the concepts and technologies for integration between DB2 and Big Data. With this information, DB2 technical professionals can impact the choices being made in their organizations. Speaker Biographies Ken McDonald (BMC Software) Ken McDonald joined BMC Software in 1994 as a developer on RECOVER PLUS for DB2. He then moved to development on Log Master for DB2 version 1 and ultimately became the Product Architect for Log Master and the High-speed Apply Engine. Other development work included the Log Apply feature of CONCURRENT REORG. Ken is currently the Solution Architect for DB2 Recovery Management Solution. Prior to BMC, Ken spent almost 11 years at EDS, first as an Application Programmer (health industry), became a Database Systems Programmer supporting DB2, IMS, and IDMS, and then transitioned to be an MVS Systems Programmer. Mike McCarthy () Mike McCarthy works in the IBM Big Data Channels organization. For the past two years, he has focused on IBM Big Data offerings which include a hadoop- based product, realtime analytics processing software, analytics software, and data exploration and visualization solutions. Mike has supported IBM Business Partners for the past 18 years, supporting a variety of technologies including DB2 for LUW, DB2 Warehouse, Master Data Management, Netezza, and Big Data. Prior to that, he was a systems engineer working with IBM customers in the Great Lakes region on a variety of IBM hardware and software products. Mike is a long-time MDUG board member. 4 May 2014

7 5. Group Support Volunteers are the heart of any non-profit group. This is especially true for MDUG. Without volunteers to handle the affairs of the group, the group wouldn t exist. Group membership fees only provide enough income to cover the costs for holding the seminars, and others things such as the web site and the PO Box, which are required for the group s operation. There isn t enough income to pay someone to find speakers, pay bills, coordinate activities, etc. As always MDUG needs more volunteers to keep operating. Volunteering is a good way to find out more about the group operations and expand your skills. If you can volunteer to support the group s activities next year, please let us know. Many of the support activities can be done from your home or desk and many do not take more then a few hours a month. Even MDUG Board meetings can be done from your desk, as all meetings are held via telecom and usually not more than once a month. And supporting the group allows you to attend the seminars at no cost. A few of the areas where you could help out are: supporting the web site, taking reservations, suggesting topics/speakers, management of the group s, group coordination, providing onsite support at the seminar, handling evaluations, and speaker introductions. We hope you will talk to one of the red ribbon wearers at the seminar about how you can volunteer or send an with your contact information to admin@mdug.org asking where you can help out or just that you want to discuss volunteering with someone on the board. We will get back to you. Please volunteer to help by talking to any board member, contacting MDUG at admin@mdug.org. If you are a DB2 practitioner, MDUG needs you and your ideas and enthusiasm." 6. Group s Future Current board members will mentor new board members on procedures and tasks. For most of the roles/functions, the time commitment is not large. A few group members have helped lead the group over the past decade. Some will be moving on to new endeavors or are no longer involved with DB2. So, if you want MDUG to continue to offer local training and seminars, please volunteer now. Roles Speaker coordinator, Facilities coordinator, Newsletter editor, Website editor, Membership database administrator, Onsite support, management, Treasurer, President Without new volunteers DB2 seminars could be a thing of the past, unless one of the vendors takes over the operation of the seminars. If you can t volunteer, are you willing to pay more to keep MDUG functioning. Let us know on the evaluation or by your responding to this note with an to admin@mdug.org. 7 May 2014
