2 Course Description: Strategic Human Resources Management Leadership in the field of Human Resources requires much more skill and knowledge now than it has in the past. CEOs and boards have higher expectations for the role of the HR leader as a knowledgeable business partner and strategic leader. This course introduces the seasoned HR practitioner to areas of knowledge CEOs have told us they want you to know. A comfort level with these topics ensures that you speak the same language as other business leaders and can effectively partner at the senior levels of your organization. A multitude of resources are used and topics include a history of HR management, identification and analysis of strategic trends, the dynamics of changing technology, best practices in HR systems design, financial acumen for HR professionals, HR's role in effective Sarbanes-Oxley implementation, mergers and acquisitions strategy, HR metrics and the ROI (return on investment) of human resources. Prerequisite: Elements of Human Resource Management (Management X450) or consent of instructor.

3 Course Goals & Objectives: This course provides the HR professional a strategic view of human resources management and provides the opportunity to see how policies implemented in HR actually fit into the strategic plan of the organization. Introduces the HR professional to much of the language and information used in the boardroom to achieve the strategic goals of the organization. 4 Grading: Course grades will be based on participation and completion of assignments as follows: 90% - 100% = A 80% - 89% = B 70% - 79% = C 60% - 69% = D 59% - and below = F Weekly discussion: 10 points per week total = 90 Weekly homework*: 10 points per week total = 90 Examinations: midterm(wk 5) and Final (Wk 9) 50 points each total = 100 Research Paper: (due Week 9) = 50 Total Points Possible in Class 330 *Students may elect to do the homework current events assignment or the DVD interactive assignment for that material. If the students do the DVD interactive questions, they must submit a 1-2 page paper that describes the decisions they made, the consequences of those decisions and the lessons learned. Students must substantively participate in the class discussion each week to earn discussion points for that week. Course is 9 weeks long. Course also has a research paper and midterm and final exams as required assignments. Please note that ALL COURSE GRADES ARE FINAL. Incompletes: The interim grade Incomplete may be assigned when a student's work is of passing quality, but a small portion of the course requirements are incomplete for good cause (e.g. illness or other serious problem). It is the student s responsibility to discuss with the instructor the possibility of receiving an I grade as opposed to a non-passing grade. The student is entitled to replace this grade by a passing grade and to receive unit credit provided they complete the remaining coursework satisfactorily, under the supervision of and in a time frame determined by the instructor in charge, but in no case later than the end of the next academic quarter. At that time, the Registrar will cause all remaining Incompletes to lapse to the grade "F". Note: Receiving an I does not entitle a student to retake all or any part of the course at a later date. Student Behavior involving cheating, copying other s work, and plagiarism are not tolerated and will result in disciplinary action. The weekly homework is a one page paper about a current event dealing with any of the textbook topics for that week and how this applies to the workplace today. This paper shows the connection between the materials and legal concepts we study and how those relate to the real world workplace today.
