6 Routes to Payroll Alliance Qualifications Students now have the option of several approaches to the Payroll Alliance Qualifications. We can now offer more choice on a stepped approach to personal development. For any other combination please contact our Course Information Line on All Payroll Alliance s programmes are assessed using well-established assessment instruments which have been internally monitored and are subject to regular review. The learners are presented with all assignments either online and in hard copy to suit their individual needs. These are case-study based and provide a range of very effective, practical activities which are very similar to the type of work they are undertaking in the workplace. The learner work sampled during the external verification was of a very good standard and this was recognised by the assessors who provide clear, evaluative feedback to the learners. The assessors are applying the appropriate qualification standards with all work being subject to a second assessment and an internal quality assurance check. External Verifier, Pearson, April

7 Professional Award in Payroll Administration (BTEC level 4) This qualification consists of four days classroom-based training on our Payroll Foundation course, with three examination papers on the 5th and final day. The examinations will not only test delegates knowledge but their understanding of the key payroll procedures that are covered in one or more parts of the Foundation Course. Upon successful completion of all three parts of the examination you will be awarded the BTEC Edexcel Professional Award in Payroll Administration. The qualification will be based on the following training: Days one and two Day three Day four Day five Tax, NI, Starters and Leavers Statutory Sick Pay, Maternity, Paternity, Shared Parental Pay and Adoption Pay Legalities and Practicalities Examinations Full details of what is covered each day can found at: Candidates who successfully pass all three exam papers qualify for exemptions to our distance learning qualifications: Certificate in Payroll Practice, Diploma in Payroll Supervision and Advanced Professional Diploma in Payroll Management. Students can add optional classroom tuition for a special price. 07

8 Certificate in Payroll Practice (BTEC level 4) An introductory education in the fundamentals of payroll administration, procedure and compliance, and an introduction to the legislation affecting payroll. Students who hold the Professional Award in Payroll Administration are exempt from module 1. Course contents and learning timetable Total Duration nine months (reduced to six months with an exemption to module 1) MODULE 1 - Practical and Functional Aspects of Payroll: three months PAYE and NI: PAYE introduction, tax year, tax periods, tax allowances, tax bands, tax tables, tax calculation, National Insurance introductions, NIC classes, categories, NIC calculation using exact percentage, Real Time Information. SSP, SMP, SPP, ShPP and SAP: Introduction, eligibility, entitlement, exclusion, notification, evidence. SSP: PIW, waiting days, qualifying days, linking periods, average earnings, initiation of payment. SMP: Qualifying week, average earnings, initiation of payment. This module involves manually calculating a small number of weekly and monthly payslips to arrive at the correct net pay. Pension Administration tax relief, registered Pension Scheme, Scheme administrators and their role, Pension Schemes online, Auto enrolment. MODULE 2 - Payroll Obligations and Legal Considerations: three months Protection of Wages and lawful deductions. Unlawful deductions and the right of complaint. Employment rights, contracts of employment, statutory deductions. Operation of, council tax, Attachment of Earnings Order, Deduction from Earnings Orders, Arrestment of Earnings Order. National insurance reduced liability and age exceptions plus National Insurance for multiple employments. MODULE 3 - Payroll Systems and Statutory Regulations: three months PAYE and NI: PAYE K codes, new employee procedure, leaver procedure, casual workers, students, payroll policy procedures. NICs for starters and leavers. Provision of benefits, identifying benefits and non-taxable benefits, business expenses and Class 1 A. SSP and SMP: legal requirements, payment timetable, recovery, overpayments and underpayments. Payroll Procedures and Employment Law: obligations to employee, to employer and to other bodies. Students who have completed the Certificate in Payroll Practice qualify for an exemption to Modules 1 to 3 of the Diploma in Payroll Supervision. 08

9 Diploma in Payroll Supervision (BTEC level 4) A comprehensive education in the fundamentals of payroll administration, procedure and compliance, and an introduction to the legislation affecting payroll. Please note: students who hold the Professional Award in Payroll Administration are exempt from module 1 and students who hold the Certificate in Payroll Practice are exempt from modules 1, 2, and 3. Course contents and learning timetable Total Duration 15 months (reduced to 12 months with an exemption to module 1) Your first 9 months MODULE 1 - Practical and Functional Aspects of Payroll: three months PAYE and NI: PAYE introduction, tax year, tax periods, tax allowances, tax bands, tax tables, tax calculation, National Insurance introductions, NIC classes, categories, NIC calculation exact percentage. 10 Diploma in Payroll Supervision (BTEC level 4) Your final 6 months MODULE 4 - Financial Administrative Requirements of Payroll: three months Payroll accounting gross build up, voluntary deductions and payments to third parties, payroll procedures statutory and voluntary deductions. Month end reconciliation procedure, BACS submission, Payment to HMRC, fraud prevention. Computerised systems, general payroll management, data capture, data verification and control. MODULE 5 - Principles of General Payroll Management and Staff Training: three months Guide to successful training, training new staff and supervision of staff. Relationships with other departments and external organisations and staff delegation. Establishing your position and organising your own work and that of your staff. Office management, team building and motivation. Communication and dealing with difficult employees. Students who have completed the Diploma in Payroll Supervision qualify for an exemption to Modules 1 to 3 of the Advanced Professional Diploma in Payroll Management. 11 Advanced Professional Diploma in Payroll Management (BTEC level 5) Please note: students who hold the Professional Award in Payroll Administration are exempt from assignment 1 of Module 1. Students who hold the Diploma in Payroll Supervision are exempt from modules 1, 2 and 3 (this reduces study time to just ten months). Course contents and learning timetable Total Duration 24 months MODULE 1: Organisation and Operating Process of Payroll: four months Introduces students to the PAYE system and how the tax year is constructed. It also requires the students to manually calculate tax, NI and statutory payments to arrive at the correct net pay. MODULE 2: Lawful and Statutory deductions and Payroll Law: five months This module covers technical issues and employment law and includes employee rights, contracts of employment, termination payments and taxation of benefits in kind. MODULE 3: Managing the Payroll Procedures and Liabilities: five months This module involves payroll procedures including how to deal with overpayments, data protection and the correct treatment of statutory and voluntary deductions. MODULE 4: Best Practice Payroll Management: five months This module concentrates on payroll management and centres around reconciliation procedures, BACS submission, payments to HMRC and other third parties. How to deal with internal and external audits and setting up PAYE Settlement Agreements are also dealt with in this module. MODULE 5: Financial and Office Management: five months This is the final module and examines office management such as budgetary control and analysis, delegation, staff training and motivation of staff. Evaluation of payroll systems and integration of associated systems are also included in this module. 12 Bridgers Many of our students prefer to take the step by step approach to their studies as outlined in the chart on page 6. These students are known as Bridgers because once they have completed one qualification, they bridge across to the next one. Students who have completed the Certificate in Payroll Practice are exempt from the first three modules of the Diploma in Payroll Supervision if they wish to continue their studies. This means that they have only modules 4 and 5 (three months per module) to complete to qualify for the Diploma in Payroll Supervision. Certificate in Payroll Practice to Diploma in Payroll Supervision Duration six months: to complete Modules 4 and 5 of the Diploma in Payroll Supervision. Equally, students who have completed the Diploma in Payroll Supervision are exempt from the first three modules of the Advanced Diploma in Payroll Management. Therefore they have only two modules to complete, modules 4 and 5 (five months per module), to attain the Advanced Professional Diploma in Payroll Management. Diploma in Payroll Supervision to Diploma in Payroll Management Duration ten months: to complete Modules 4 and 5 of the Diploma in Payroll Management. 13 Payroll Alliance Online Academy Payroll Alliance s Online Academy allows the student to study anytime, anywhere. As well as having paper versions of the study material, our students also have access to all our course manuals and question banks via the Online Academy. Audio-visual lectures are available to view online as often as required and in addition the audio files can be downloaded on to any MP3 player. Help is never far away through the use of the Tutor, Student and Site Help Forums. The Forums allow students to access our Tutors words of wisdom and build a study network. Students are given the freedom and support to study whenever and wherever best suits their own needs. 13

Online report writing course As many of the assignments on the certificate and diploma programmes require students to produce reports we offer a free online report writing course via the Academy. The report writing course includes examples, exercises and hard copy course notes and can be accessed free throughout the student s studies. Presentations Each of our study manuals has a corresponding presentation written by our tutors. These can be viewed individually or in combination with the MP3 lectures, enabling you to study even when you are on the move. Tutor forum Useful tips are posted by our highly experienced tutor team. Student forum Students learn best when they have the ability to share common experiences. This forum allows all students to do this. Personal study blog Keep an online record of your progress and set individual targets to work toward. Payroll calendar containing all up and coming course dates and other key information, the calendar will help you plan your time. Students studying for the Certificate in Payroll Practice, Diploma in Payroll Supervision and the Advanced Diploma in Payroll Management have free access to all of the above. 14

Should you extend your studies for extenuating circumstances then further registration and deferral fees may be payable. Graduates who have attained their payroll qualifications through another provider (certificate, diploma and above) are also eligible to become Graduate members following payment of a one-off 35 registration fee. 17
