2 Role Information Role Type Pay Band Location Duration Reports to: Communications Manager Ukraine 6/G Kyiv Fixed-term contract till 31/03/2019 with possibility of extension Head of Marketing and Communications Ukraine Role purpose To lead the planning, coordination and delivery of communications objectives for the British Council in Ukraine by developing, implementing and evaluating effective communications plans that support corporate, regional and country strategy and business plans. Our organisation is structured as a matrix of eight geographical Regions and three Strategic Business Units (SBU) of English and Examinations, Education and Society, and Arts, supported by professional business services including Marketing and Communications, HR, Finance, risk management and infrastructure services. Geopolitical/SBU/Function overview: The British Council has been operating in Ukraine since 1992, working to promote educational, scientific and cultural cooperation between Ukraine and the UK. The British Council s activities include the teaching of English and the administration of UK exams on a commercial basis, the delivery of technical assistance contracts for governments and international donors, and the delivery of charitable projects and programmes in English, Education and Science, Society, and the Arts and Culture, using UK Government funds. 3 The British Council has significantly scaled up its English, Education, Society and Culture programmes in Ukraine since the 2014 Revolution of Dignity. The current programme portfolio is focused on: Improving the teaching and learning of English in schools and universities to enhance young Ukrainians employability and give them skills to access wider views and opinions. Improving the quality, relevance, effectiveness and transparency of higher education in Ukraine as a vital enabler for social and economic development, for innovation and for the embedding of democratic demand amongst young Ukrainians. Transforming thousands of young people across Ukraine each year into Active Citizens, with greater understanding of difference, and equipped with the skills and confidence to contribute to their communities and country s development and cohesion through social action. Strengthening the capacity of the cultural sector and the creative industries to contribute to Ukraine's social and economic development. Main opportunities/challenges for this role: The role holder will drive communications initiatives, motivating staff, dealing with media and supporting the communications requirements of Country Director Ukraine senior leadership and the operation as a whole. The post will be responsible for developing strategic relations and partnerships opportunities with the media to attain TV and publication audience targets for the country. The post holder will maximise British Council Ukraine s impact externally and internally through engaging stories and branded content, and deliver to regional and corporate targets as a member of a wider community of communication professionals. Main Accountabilities: Communications Strategy Create and implement external and internal communications strategy that will be aligned with corporate and regional frameworks; this strategy will ensure that our regional vision and messages for the three Strategic Business Units, English, Arts, Education and Society, is embedded within all of our programmes and projects across Ukraine including client-funded contracts and business services. Plan and deliver communications objectives for all British Council activities. Participate in business planning and strategy meetings to ensure that communications is at the heart of all our activities. Provide communications advice for Country Director Ukraine and the senior leadership in the British Council in the form of background briefings, presentations, key message development and interview preparation, and identifying opportunities for visibility Develop appropriate media partnerships in programme areas to maximise British Council presence in TV and print media. 3 COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER UKRAINE [Insert date prepared] The British Council

4 Internal Communications and Engagement Work with the key stakeholders in Ukraine and the region to contribute to engaging, timely and effective internal communications through innovative channels. Identify key programmes and activities in Ukraine and work closely with programme teams in creating and sharing the impact through current channels and media (Intranet, Wider Europe stories and the like) as well as extending its reach to the entire organisation through The Voices online magazine, newsletters and reports. Ensure that our work is well represented in all internal British Council communications efforts in-country, regionally and globally. Unified and Enhanced Communications Work closely with country programme teams and a country director to strengthen brand management capacity focusing on consistency, style and tone of communication, quality in events management and ensure our brand compliance of all communication and marketing materials. Together with the regional marketing team, especially its digital department, enhance and additionally reshape effective communication messages for our social media, website, marketing and other digital content. Media and Public Relations Develop relationships on behalf of the British Council with key media. Develop media pitches and craft stories that profile our work both externally and internally. Act as Ukraine focal point for regional and cross-regional communications teams involved in multi-country programmes, providing advice and support where relevant to country specific work. Ensure staff teams understand our brand and the commercial benefits of consistent delivery, and that they are equipped with the tools and knowledge to support communications objectives. Manage service agreements with local vendors and service providers for marketing communication needs and contribute to the development and production of related content: i.e. posters, flyers, brochures, event brandings and other merchandising Manage the design and production process for TV, radio, print, newspaper and outdoor advertisements when necessary.
