1 An Individual Develpment Plan (IDP) is a written list f gals tied t a schedule r timeline that serves as a radmap twards achieving prfessinal develpment and career bjectives. In additin, IDPs serve as useful tls t help facilitate cmmunicatin between graduate students and their mentrs by prviding gals and milestnes at regularly scheduled times that can be evaluated and mdified. Gals and benefits f the IDP An annual IDP is a single, but imprtant, cmpnent f a brader mentring prgram. It helps yu, the graduate student: Establish target dates and research milestnes Set gals and sub-gals fr the next year Define career gals and create annual plans t reach thse gals Identify skill and knwledge gaps and hw t fill thse gaps Outline f the IDP prcess The develpment, implementatin, and revisin f yur IDP requires a series f steps cnducted by yu, and then discussed with yur research mentr and yur dissertatin cmmittee: During rientatin, cmplete the AAAS IDP ( Abut 1 week prir t yur annual cmmittee meeting, cmplete the IDP Annual Frm Discuss yur IDP Annual Frm during yur annual cmmittee meeting, making revisins t part III if necessary In yur third year, and after yu have advanced t candidacy, revise yur AAAS IDP By August 15 th f each year yu are in residence at UC Merced, submit a current CV and either the IDP Annual Frm r yur Advancement Exam results Ph.D. prgram learning utcmes fr the Chemistry and Chemical Bilgy graduate prgram: 1. Pssess the fundamental knwledge needed t understand and critically evaluate current research in their chsen subfield f chemistry 2. Cmmunicate fundamental cncepts in their field as well as their wn research effectively, in bth written and ral frm 3. Cnduct themselves ethically and respnsibly in science-related prfessins 4. Be prficient in labratry, theretical, and/r cmputatinal techniques necessary t cntribute t knwledge in their chsen subfield f chemistry 5. Identify new research pprtunities, plan effective strategies fr pursuing these pprtunities, and cnduct research that makes a new cntributin t knwledge in their chsen subfield f chemistry.
